Ok gang, its time for the 2008 Calendar :) Please submit whatever kickass shots you may have. There is no theme and all photos (that fit the tech specs) will be considered.
I've seen some great pics this year, so post them up! The pics get better every year...and I would love for the 2008 calendar to really shine!
Minimum Photo Size/Resolution: 2272 x 1920
Submission Deadline: This thread will be closed on 11/10/07 That gives you a month to get me some pics!
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. 2272 x 1920 or larger images are way too big to insert into your post. PLEASE!...JUST POST A LINK TO THE IMAGE.
(host your images at imageshack.us - photobucket.com - or email it to me first, I'll host it, then I'll provide you with a link so you can post it) Please PM me for my email.
2. No photo-chopped images (unless it is a minor touch-up)
3. No images with date/time stamps or watermarks.
4. No images that were blown up to meet the minimum size requirement.
5. No basic driveway or parking lot shots. (meaning: my car is parked in front of my house...with a Taurus in front and a Trans Am in back...lets take a pic for the calendar) Please focus on composure. We had some great ones last year!
NOTE: To allow for trimming, PLEASE be sure that your vehicle is centered in the photo!!!
PM me if you have questions.

Does the car HAVE to be in the dead center?
I have some pretty cool pics of my car a little off center.

I think this is what Mike has in mind in terms of centering...
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t187/celicasupragirl/Black85/IMG_0975.jpg
Having done calendars myself, I do know how important it is for the car to be centered, and not fill up the pic too much as it may get cropped out upon printing.

Hey guys,
We have found that the best 'calendar pics' are created when you actually take the pic with the intention of it going into a calendar.
It seems like composition/quality/lighting etc are given more attention when taking a shot with an intended destination.
Here is a nice tutorial:

Also, the pics don't have to be as 'centered' as tanya is showing.
Here are a few examples from least year that worked out nicely:

Here are a couple submissions for now. I will for sure have more for it is fall in Colorado.
These are lower resolution because photobucket won't allow more than 1meg file size. I'll be able to email the full sizes.

Hey Greg, thanks for the welcome. I posted some recent engine bay pics of the 82 as well as a pic of one completed wheel restoration. I also posted one exterior pic, although it is a few years old. I'll get out the camera this week and shoot some good shots of the exterior and a few of the interior for you. Trying to play catch up with time (as far as the car aging and what not) is a slow and costly process which I'm sure you can testify to also.

Mike, not this year, obviously, but, have you ever considered ...
Rat rides --- give some love to "old reliable"
Track shot's --- Pictures that come to mind --- Dave's white beast launching, Agatha launching, Wes' car, the drift guys, etc. Not neccesarily those cars, but those type of pics.
The normal calenders you do, show cars that many of us aspire to own similar examples of, but Reality is, most of us never will.

Has been done at least 1x that I know of. Either the very 1st calendar (that Dr. Dupler did) or the 2nd calendar (that was Mike's 1st calendar) has a action picture of Don Lew's AutoXmobile out @ Bremerton Raceway going around a cone. Very same calendar I believe also had Chris Clement's 85 out on a Road Course.
I for one, would like to see a picture of rwhite's race car out on the track. If he has any good pictures.

Crop as you see fit Mike. I gave you the original size... I think some shld come off the left side to balance/center the car. At least thats what I did to the resized version I posted here. Theres a little more noise than I'd like... but its a dark image. Maybe I sharpened it previously... I dont recall. Let me know if its unmanageable.

deaf rattle : where in the world did you get the mark 2 emblem from? just curious, i have never seen any of those around my neck of the woods.
hey
I had a gx71(mark II) parts car at one stage (was looking at a 1ggte conversion for my ma61) that was the badge that was on the back. I thought it was pretty cool so i put it on the grill.

See below.
smb: whatever u want. Just keep people, other cars, hoses trees, direct sunlight, excessive glare, out of the pics (unless you know exactly why you are adding them in the pic) Cant wait to see them!
The trees might be okay, but I think Mike is going to have a issue w/ the glare coming off the right rear.
Welcome anyway!! Do you have any other pictures??
Yes, I have few more, but I need to adjust them a bit. And btw, that's not direct sunlight, and I don't see any glare there, sun light just bounces from car. But I'm aware with that.
EDIT: Here they are.

Centering is ok but that pic needs major cropping for the calendar. Not picking on you Tanya, this is just a good example of some of the pics that have made it into the calendar in recent years that wasted so much page real estate on pavement. I can think of a couple where literally half the page was wasted on asphalt, usually because the photographer couldn`t hold the camera still enough to make it not blur with the light conditions they were working with so they put the cam on the ground to take the pic. USE A TRIPOD! Or at the very least, go big on resolution so you can crop out the crap and still meet or exceed the minumum size requirements (which are very important, we`ve had some blurry pics in the past too).
End Rant :) I will have to look through my stuff and see if anything is worthy for this year.

10 feet further back or straight over the man-hole, at another time of the day would be great ( I think )

A: I am taking new pics, lotsa great shots from my Japan trip. It wouldn`t be the first time I`ve gotten in a pic of someone else car that I took ;)
B: Its October. Prime picture taking time is over in Vancouver for this year, its rain and gloom till spring.
C: All of my nice cars are off the road for one reason or other.
So I will look through my stuff :p I took a ton of wicked shots of my 85 on a trip to Cali last year and I managed to get some good ones of my 86 for the 3 days I had it on the road this year. Plus with my Japan trip, I should have something for you.

Those are really awesome shots, but I see the problem is that the car is too close to the edges and it may cause problems with cropping. The pics need to be centered so there is room to work with to get the car in the right spot on the calendars.

Very bad photos? Really? Which ones?
April: Not only does the pavement occupy half of the photo, a good 2/3's of that is out of focus. The car should be centered vertically or a little below center.
June: Fantastic car, way too close cropped. Those little bits cut off the left and right sides really detract from the full experience of the reflections.
September: again, fantastic car but a little too close cropped.
October works because the car is framed in the shot by the background. It's also a somewhat unique angle and height.
Dan Mac's photo is perfect. The higher-than-standing-height angle is awesome.
And I think we need a lot more of December, even if the cars are less than perfect. Actions shots like that are far more memorable, even if the car is beat up, rusty, or missing parts. It'd be cool if we can get a great photo of one of the 24 hours of lemons cars at work.
February/August are essentially the same photo. And while the overall tone of both photos is different (and maybe that makes up for it), I don't feel they have enough differences to note. I know last year you were looking for cars in 'urban settings', which I thought was/is a great idea, but more variation in the shots would only be an improvement. The same goes for March and May shots. Both are essentially the same (although March is close cropped).
I don't know, maybe I'm just picky. I just think that the shots in the calendar should either show absolutely stunning cars in stunning settings, or great cars doing awesome things (drifting, great motion shots, etc.) For what it's worth, I'd be very happy to help with commenting on selections, if it's welcomed.

I'm limited to the pics that I receive. Its not like I have a staff of pro photogs who are paid to go across the world to take pro pics of Supras ;) Cropping happens if images are submitted in the wrong size. Again, something I cant control. Rest assured that the 07 calendar had the best pics from what was submitted. (plus, Im not sure that I agree with all of your comments)
I LOVE action shots and always ask for them. The drift shot was prob my fav from the 07 calendar.
ps. Send me some kickass shots, will ya?? ;)
I am one of the ones that agrees with most of Slips comments actually. Not trying to nitpick or take a shot at ya Mike, but I sent you 4 gorgeous pics that didn't suffer from any of those problems Slip mentioned and IMHO were much better quality pics then several that did make it. They were all of another red 85 mind you, that might have had something to do with them not getting in. I've seen the stuff you take and the examples you give Mike and I know you know what a good pic is so I'm quite happy to leave it up to you to decide what gets in. Every year I look forward to see what pics made it in. In fact I kinda don't like these submission threads as I prefer to have never seen the calendar pics before. Anyways, I hope I havn't offended you but I've seen so many great pics in this thread already that there really should be no reason for any pics to make it in that are cropped or shot poorly (as I recall last years submission thread was filled with good candidates too). It is defintaly a bit of a challenge to crop a pic taken in 1.3:1 and convert it to the 1.18:1 ratio that the calendar is in, but if the pic can't fit nicely, then it should be dropped, there is more then enough good ones out there. Thanks once again for doing this every year Mike!
I will get you some good submissions ready, pics that I've never posted online before to boot ;)

I did my best with what I had last year. Dave makes it every year (again for 08) b/c he submits some SICK shots of a beautiful car. Everything is right, the angles are usually awesome so they make it to the calendar. If I receive 20 shots like that, he wouldnt make it every year...but I have slim pickins come Nov usually.
(as I rcall last years submission thread was filled with good candidates too).
Not all were: real hi res, the right ratio, clean without PS (MAJOR pet peeve), unique. Believe me, I did the best with what I had.
but if the pic can't fit nicely, then it should be dropped, there is more then enough good ones out there.
Again, this was not an option last year.
I will get you some good submissions ready, pics that I've never posted online before to boot ;)

Sicne I first saw this thread the weather has either been horrible or I've had camera issues. I plan on getting some new pictures taken this weekend if the sun comes out, but since i'm itchy, here's a few that I had sitting around. The last one is obviously photoshoped (actually it's MSPainted to see what bigger wheels look like...couldn't find the original, and yeah, I know i did a shitty job) Like I said, just a few random shots to get me going.

Here are a few of Mike Rap's supra that I took for him this weekend, not sure what is usable, Im going to see if my crapo lense got any good enough of us on the road course to submit(we where going to try to get mine, Mikes and chris parvin's car in the same shot on the course)
Here are three corner shots of Mike's car, the one at night likely won't work, but here they are

Greg - Agreed. My digital camera has great quality and features, but the battery life is pretty horrible. It's always hard for me to know what's going to turn out right, sometimes something that seems like a good idea turns out horrible, and sometimes shitty things end up great... Cars seem to be the only thign that give me that problem. I'll see what I can come up with this week, today lighting wasn't my biggest concern...avoiding rain is hard as hell lately.

Yea, the lighting was awefull I was experimenting with angles and settings to see how it'd work out. Guess I'll have to call Mike up and we'll go hand out, I've got a good location, he'll just need to do a little off roading to get there =)

skoon's under the bridge picture is perfect (2nd from bottom).
The last one is good but I think you focus too much on the city's skyline. You should have just put the car in the middle.
The one with the train has a lot of potential but somehow I dont like it. I dont know why. The angle of the car maybe?
The other picture under the bridge is no good due to the sun and shadow on the dirt. If you have taken it on overcast day, it would have been perfect. I really like it but the sun and the shadow ruined it for me.
