As usual, people wont like it. That said, its time for a refresh and I really want to add static links for the vendors who support us.
Many large forums run this style...and others are switching to it. Its even default on the last few versions of VB.
The next step will take some work, but I'm going to ask people to shrink their sigs/avatars to reasonable sizes. All new images will be smaller, but I cant go back and change existing images.

Count me as the #1 hater right away !!!
I feel myself leaning to the left while trying to read. That 1" of wasted space at the top of each post sucks also.
This one, I really don't believe I'll get used to. Default ot not, if this is the new style of forums, I'll be spending less and less time online. I never was happy with Yahoo after the merge with E-groups, and I have a similar distaste too it.

You could run a database query to wipe all avatars and any new avatar uploaded must be to the size you now specify.

I know you're still changing stuff around, and I hate to be one of those complainers who don't like change, but Shawn's right - there's a whole inch or so of waste vertical space at the top of every post now. It's 2007, those who don't have resolutions high enough to handle ads on the right and names on the left have no excuse.
Edit: Although I just realized that I'm not a paying member, so who gives a crap what I say. wtf is with that.
Edit: Problem solved.

Even the high end forums are setup this way: 6speedonline.com, ferrarichat.com, dtmpower.net, bimmerforums.com, trailvoy.com, xlforum.net, etc etcThat doesn't mean it's the most efficient... but change is change. We'll all get used to it and it really shouldn't be a deal breaker for anyone (shawn...). WRT to what tanya said - if we've paid will we have no bar on the right side, or will it just be blank?

Ok, Ill bite: what does? Your opinion?
Deanfun
11-23-2007, 06:12 PM
Ok, Ill bite: what does? Your opinion? Please don't take me so seriously. I happen to think a setup with avatars/info on the left makes threads more concise and easier to follow. you don't have every post broken up by a 1-inch bar, so it's easier to follow the flow of conversations or whatever is being discussed. I know we had a difference of opinion on last years calendar too (I was in the strong minority with my feelings, I know this), but don't mistake my comments or suggestions for assumptions that I am the type of person that thinks My Way Is The Best Way. I think I just present myself a bit differently than some other people.
Actually... you know what would be great with this particular layout: I don't know if you've ever been to howardforums.com (some cellphone geek site), but they have a similar setup with avatars on top. In the middle space between the avatar/name and location/join date/posts where ours is currently blank, they have a numbered list where people can list what cellphones they have. how nerdy. In any case, a similar list for people to put their cars in might work, and could potentially reduce signature sizes.

Guess I will post here since my thread got nuked.
Hate the bar on the right. It's like the bars on the high def. tvs. Get a big tv to have two bars on the side so the image is smaller.
Could center the content and have the ads on left and right. At least I won't get a headache and I won't have to go to the chiropractor to straighten my neck.
Guess I could always shift my chair to the left and just shut up about it.
Malloy
11-23-2007, 06:33 PM
There are 3 vendors who spend $$$ to support this site. I'm doing this so I can make sure they have a static link on every single forum page. Make sense? There is no other way of doing it.

I DEFINITELY agree to this suggestion right here. I like how on the XL forum there are menus to the left, but I think the vendors/ads should be on the right, and then everything is centered.
Just like how things are/were on cs.coms home page
forum navigation

Not only is the avator bar breaking the conversation, but so are the sigs...so there is a huge gap now between post content. it was bad enough with huge sigs. BUT I will wait until you are finished before I fully comment. The left justified setting of the thread is a little unnatural too.

Dont mind the new layout.
Just a suggestion to fill the space on the right side, maybe just repeat the static links and other adds down the entire length of page, it would elminate the dead space. Perhaps for the people who have paid to have the adds removed, post the pics from the most recent calender down the side.

but i do think it would be pretty cool to have some pics from the 2007 calendar down the extra space until the 2008 calendar comes out.

Thanks for the suggestions! I already repeated the static ads, but it looks pretty busy. Also, the page length is variable...so its impossible to do this. I like the pic idea, but the space is 120px wide....not much to work with.
I have a simple "Thank You Platinum Member!" that replaces the goog ads....but Im open to suggestions.

Suggestion:
somehow put the signature beside the avatar.
this way, there will not be two(2) areas of 'no new info'
what we want to read (the post itself) has above and below
information that repeats all the time.
If need to be, remove the Join date /location/post count
that can always be looked at in the profile of the member.

Seriously, think about what you are saying...blaming that on the format change is simply false. The new format moves the content to the left quite a bit. This would make you scroll less, not more, assuming a pic does not fit on your screen. Look at my screenshots for proof of how it redistributes the data.

Don't like having to sort through the avatars & sigs to find the posts - liked the old style with the avatars and member info on the left much better.
But, I'm learning to live with it.
The ads down the right side is a nice touch - it makes it real simple to go directly to the vendor websites (now, if we can only get George to finish his so we can actually ORDER from it :) )

One more suggestion...would it be possible to but the Avatar to the right of the user name? That way the name is on the left and you can put the avatar pic in the center. Then you can have a vertical size limit on the avatar and a wide pic...kind of like a sig pic is now. Short and wide. I'd move my sig pic to my avatar if it was on the other side of my user name.

What? I really noticed it from another member. It def. cleares up the space.
Is there any way of getting the line below the avatar extended? Meaning that we can put more info there.

The nonsense in the location fields was removed. I'm sure Malloy would rather not have to set a character limit for that, so please don't abuse it.

Oh my, this is really becoming a problem I think. Maybe the static vendor ads can be placed right above the quick reply box, so the actual messages can be centered again...
grasping at straws here, lol

The changes have caused some problems with alignment with the smilies section in the advanced reply... as far as I see on my screen.

Thanks! I use a small laptop, I see both vendor and google ads every time I login and I never have a problem viewing this or any other forum with this layout. I do run a large resolution, but I tested it in 1024 and it looks a-ok.
If you are running 800x600 you are having problems looking at most pages on the net. Those days are over.
ps. Tommy might be a nazi mod ;) but hes the one who always bails me out when I mess something up....which has happened quite a few times ;)

I cant say the same, I dont have a problem when pictures arent posted. So when they are the ads are pushed off screen and text runs off screen as well.

Mike: Does what you are doing have anything to do with www.celicasupra.com?
The home page isn't there anymore, it's a cPanel(r) info page. You mentioned doing other things.

When did you lose it? I'm going though an IP Migration right now. It resolved here in an hour but it can take up to 2 days based on your location. (supposedly)

I was unaware that owning a Supra is a prerequisite for running vBulletin. ;)

There is a nice template mod I made to move the smilie box all together. You can show more smilies and not have any page width issues.
