Ok people. lets start off i it was dec. 29 and was 25 degrees out. and was driving 100 miles straight shot. and drove good the whole way. by the way all my fluids were topped off thermostat brand new. so start driving around after the long drive. and car starts over heating. thick white smoke comin out the hood. i look radiators fine. hose, thermostat area all good. look for the problem and looks like coolant is coming some where around the header closest the the firewall. i dont know whats going on if the engine is shot now or what. but the engine runs like shit now. u have to start it like a carburater car on a cold day just for it to turn over. then it will run till it gets hot and shut down. i really dont know what to do. good thing for my backup car. but i dont know if i should start restoring it now. with a 7m 1jz 2jz. i jus need to get it going for right now just in case. does anybody have any ideas. thanks a lot. to n e body who helps. greatly appreciated

ekkkk... just hang in there. I personally cant help you with you problem, but you will get lots of more advice from fluent members within hours.
good thing you have a backup auto. Wish I had a spare vehicle when my supra took a random un-scheduled vacation. :/

So why post then?
Search "suicide hose" and you should find a few threads about a hard-to-get-to hose that always seems to go at the worst times.

My first thought was suicide hose (water by-pass hose for those that don't know) but he said it was on the header/exhaust side not the intake side.

yea think that might be the problem. but i might have to rebuild the engine because my lil brother thought he might surprise me be trying to fix it and it overheated real bad. now it really runs like shit. i have to pump the gas just to even get it to start. i dont know though. maybe ill try and get ah 6m ge. who knows. just for future info. how much would it be to rebuild the 5m ge. or to find a 6m ge say at ah junkyard. to all those who answered thanks a lot. really appreciated it. i love my supra and still do. my first car, had a choice of it or a iroc z. chose the supra.

maybe a head gasket? hope for the suicide hose...real pain but better than head gasket. I temp fixed suicide hose in dark at midnight few years back, not fun, lucky I had some tools with me.

How about them Packers?!
back on subject at hand - your Supra is EFI - Pumping the foot-feed doesn't do anything before you start the car

one the exhaust side uh. definatly not the sucide hose that goes to the back of the thermostat. I replace that on all supras i get first day as it will got out in 2wks of buying any supra anyway so better just to replace it before it breaks just to save some worries. Does your heater still blow hot air? if not look at the hose that goes from the back of the head to your heater control valve. also do as matt instructed and check your hoses for your heater core. If your not getting warm air it means you have a block in your heater core like an air bubble or your heater control valve is stuck. its vaccum operated and easily reached and fixed as its mounted to your firewall. These can get old and leak or stop working and not let the coolant flow as it should like mine did in my black car and caused the car to overheat. They cost about 80 dollars at the dealership so its not a big hit on the wallet and it took me only two days to get mine. Look for a green build up around the hose ends on the heater control valve thats a good sign that somethings not right with the unit.

there are a few hoses back in that area. some are a pain to tighten down properly. check all the little hoses back behind manifold. they get exposed to some heat. if they are soft and squishy probably your problem. head gasket would be bad. have you started car and watched under hood to see exactly where your coolant is leakin at? check to see if you have heat?

well it does on mine.

Because when you pump it, throttle valve opens and shuts, letting in more air than it should need to start, which means there is something wrong with your car. But you know that already. Its NOT the same as pumping carbureted car-OK? On carbureted car, fuel squirts when you open throttle. On EFI car, fuel squirts when computer/controller tells it to. There is no mechanical link between throttle and fuel in your car, no matter what you think. I vote cracked head because of blown hose. Have compression test done by shop.

you should also check your coolant. you did say it was new right. If so it should still be bright green. if it looks dirty or contaminated already thats a good sign your head gasket just bit the dust. just pull the peacock on the radiator and drain some out to what it looks like if theres oil in it youll know.

I grewup in Wisconsin until around 8th grade, and always held packers as my status favorite. They SUCKED big hairy balls until this year, and now they are finally doing great again. The cowboys beat the packers once this year, but they wont beat them twice my friend.
Heh, I got neighbor down the street gots this bigass flag pole in his front yard with a Ravens flag :zzzzz: packers kicked there butts, so I put both of my 'car window packer flags' on my supra, drove past his house honking the horn... making sure he saw me noticed me a few times. :woot:
He took his flag down that day too. God that felt good.
Hijacking over.

it could be vice versa too. That being coolent getting into the oil.
so also check your oil for a chocolate mousse mcflurry. This happened to me recently, and i'm getting my HG replaced as we speak.

Too bad. Shouldn't have run it overheated. As soon as you realize it's hot, SHUT IT DOWN! I do understand that sometimes you just don't notice the temp. gauge until it's too late. I've overheated all of my Supras once at some point, but they were all just fine afterwards. I guess I got them shut down in time. The 5MGE IS a tough engine, but it's not indestructible. I would suspect the lower heater hose blew (it's on the firewall, right behind header/exhaust manifold). They get soft from the leaking oil from the cam cover, or the rear cam seal/O-ring. Then the heat from the exhaust bakes it, weakening it even more. It happened on my first Supra. Then it blows, you lose coolant and overheat, and end up where you are. I'm sorry it happened to you, but the Supra was still a good choice. Hopefully it didn't crack the head and you'll only need a new headgasket. Guess you're the newest member of Club BHG!

Welcome to the club!
I used to save the BHGs and had them hanging on the garage wall - 2 5me, 2 5mge, 3 7mgte, and a 7mge.
Most of them were blown before I acquired the car and fixed them up - funny how people seem to want to distance themselves from a BHG and will sell a decent car w/BHG real cheap.

Thats cool, to bad you dont save them anymore.
It would be like having a historic Napa in your own garage.
