I've been wrestling with this problem when I can for the last couple weeks. My speedo quit working. I did some searches and used some logic as well. So far I've replaced the cable (because it would bounce like it was binding at higher speeds). That wasn't the problem. I searched some more and found the Drive Gear R&R thread. I felt inside the tranny and it seemed like it should. The driven gear did have a couple teeth that had been ground down a little. So I replaced the gear and sleve to be safe. Now it seems to be working, but very strangely. The speedo works only if I'm accelerating, and even then it still bounces in 10mph increments (eg. 20-30mph) What else would you guys suggest? I now need to get this done ASAP as I have to get it inspected (expired a week ago). It's my DD right now.

Try another cluster or reinstall the new gear and sleeve. Or even try a drill first.

I came to the realization that unfortunately for me the Drive Gear clip is actually the problem. The gear had slid forward and stuck itself to where it was only hitting the driven gear part of the time, and then it was at an angle. Now for the fun of pulling the tranny AGAIN, and replacing the clip and gasket.
