The hoses are still connected to the AC compressor in my car. But the belt has been removed for who knows how long and I don't have any knowledge of wether the system is still charged or not. I would really like to remove the compressor as it's useless to me. How bad would be to unbolt the hoses?

wear gloves, hide in the woods and dont let anyone see you do it. at least thats what i heard. ;p really you should just take it it be evacuated. if it is charged maybe someone else will benefit from your unwanted refridgerant. i was joking in the beginning.

Had a friend willing to take a chance. broke the nuts lose, and popped the hose off. Nothing came "whooshing" out.

Oh, c'mon it's not that bad! The safer do-it-yourself way to see if it's still charged is to quickly press in the center of one of the shraeder valve fittings on the pressure lines with a screwdriver. If it doesn't "PSSTT!" then there is no more pressure in the system, and it is safe to dismantle. There is nothing left inside to pollute anything.
