My brother in law just bought an 88 Supra.
The first problem hes had is overheating at highway speeds but not at idle speeds. I block tested it and the blue fluid turned pee yellow very fast. Even after the engine was warmed up it turned pee yellow very quickly. Also, I didn't even need to pull air through with the ball pump air was bubbling through on it's own.
Knowing how prone 7m's are to BHGs, I figure the head gaskets is going south.
However, the smog numbers were really good except for really high NOx. And advanced timing to 17 degrees.
My question is, is it common for a bhg to pass smog with only excessive NOx?
The cooling system can't keep the engine cool and I don't know how much heat advanced timing will make but I know that advanced timing runs hotter. I also suspect the egr system is clogged.
I'm going to be doing a head gasket job on this baby so, where do I get the better metal style head gasket? From parts stores or online? Is the metal style head gasket called anything special?
