Hey guys

I have just bought a 1982 Celica Supra (XX) and am very proud of it.

It is in excellent condition, the best condition i have ever seen a car that old in (better cond than my 91 MR2 turbo)

only problem is that the charging system has suddenly failed on me.

It has gone through two batteries draining one so much that it died completely while driving.

I tested the volts of batt before and after turning car on and it remained at 12volts so i am pretty sure there is something wrong with alternator and or wiring.

Can you point me in the correct direction in terms of tests i can do with multimeter and what wiring i should be checking etc etc

One note is that it is originally a 2L turbo but now has the 5mge so there are a few empty plugs around the place.

Also i am wondering if there is a workshop manual for this car online?

thanks

Again someone who should use search wooo...search for TSRM...and I forget who but they have a big ole charging faq post linked in their sig...

also I don't know if it happens in NZ but I know if I take my car down to the autoparts store they can diagnose your charging problem for free...

You DID notice his location???

99% it's real.

Based on his posting, this car was previously a MA63 that someone swapped in a 5MGE (ie: removed the M-TEU).

Yep, run a search... Online TSRM.

With a multimeter (mm) try this...
Start the car, touch the pos probe of mm to pos of battery, neg to neg, should be reading more than 12.4 (standard battery voltage).....more like around 14v for charging. If not, trace wires back to alt. Check charge fuse. Check the plug that plugs into the alt, sometimes these wires (my experience) bend and get weak where they enter the plug assembly and sometimes are only holding on by a few stands of wire. If that's the case, these plugs are "rebuildable". Slide the rubber isolator off the back of the plug (more like pry), cut off the crap, and crimp and new female spade terminal where the one you cut out was. Slide the rubber insulator back into the back of the plug, good to go. I've had to perform this "operation" on several different Toy models, not just Supras. Also, make sure the mondo wire (I think 8ga, power from alt to batt) is good and tight. Good luck...
