View Full Version : 2009 celicasupra.com calendar - get me pics!!
Malloy

Sure, its early. I want to make sure the 2009 calendar is the best ever....so start snapping some pics!
Rules:
-No driveway shots
-No clipped shots (missing front bumper)
-No shots that take up 98.5% of the picture frame (the calendar formatting clips a bit off)
-No wash buckets, stray dogs, soda cans, dog poop, pizza boxes etc in the shot. ;)
Minimum Photo Size/Resolution: 2272 x 1920
Submission Deadline: This thread will be closed on 11/1/08
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. 2272 x 1920 or larger images are way too big to insert into your post. PLEASE!...JUST POST A LINK TO THE IMAGE.
(host your images at imageshack.us - photobucket.com - or email it to me first, I'll host it, then I'll provide you with a link so you can post it) Please PM me for my email.
2. No photo-chopped images (unless it is a minor touch-up)
3. No images with date/time stamps or watermarks.
4. No images that were blown up to meet the minimum size requirement.
5. No basic driveway or parking lot shots. (meaning: my car is parked in front of my house...with a Taurus in front and a Trans Am in back...lets take a pic for the calendar) Please focus on composure. We had some great ones last year!
NOTE x2: To allow for trimming, PLEASE be sure that your vehicle is centered in the photo!!!
Please go out and take new pics...we have found that 'old
pics are never as good as shots taken specifically for the calendar etc.
(ps. I will not choose 11 SDR cars...I promise ;)
This is NOT a good calendar pic ;)

I'll keep that in mind on the 2008 AKA Rally, I'll make sure to get pictures BEFORE they make me put on stupid DTM Power (a bmw site) stickers. But I hope to get some PIMP shots in front of the Bellagio fountains in Vegas!!

Mike, did you ever get yourself a cafepress calendar to compare???
Did you like my one graffiti shot? I can try to retake it with my enkei wheels tomorrow.
Also, where did you get the 2272 x 1920 dimensions from? If I resize a basic large pic down to 2272 it ends up being 1704 pixels high....

I can probably arrange that. I've got my D40 now, and I can arrange to drive by the salt flats on my way home from Las Vegas and get the wife to snap a few. By sideways do you mean like drifting the salt flats?

...are we going for action shots this year?
Big downside to point and shoots, they're sloooooowww.
I'm going to have to learn how to be a pan-master to keep up with a moving car for as long as it's going to take.

mk2-ijz where the hell is your driver seat? Driving like a gangster with the seat leaned back reaching for the steering wheel from the back seat? I'd say for the underground parking lots try a cleaner one, the stains on the roof and to the right of your car make it look grungy, or maybe a slight angle or someting.

Whatever people do, don't reduce your resolution to this size, bigger is better!
I belive another pic slipped into the calander again last year that you could see the pixelation on. Not sure if it was one that was upsized or what but it definitly can be hard to tell how a digital picture is going to look untill its printed.
I don't know if I can get my car ready for this years calander or not yet but I have a very special pic planned for a couple locals cars I'd like to submit. I think I already have the record for the "most pictures taken of other peoples cars" into the calendar, so why stop now lol.

The 2008 calendar I have has pixelation on all of the pages even on the cover. I think its printing quality that ruins the photo.

My old Sony DSC-S85 4.1MP only does 2272x1704 max or "2272(3:2)" which is 2272x1520 as its' two top resolution choices and the 8x10's I've printed from it at either of those settings look fine to me. It's got a Carl Zeiss lens with 3x optical zoom (ignoring its' 6x Digital Zoom feature) iirc. Is that adequate or do I need to get a friend with a newer, higher res camera to shoot for me?
Also, is more than one car in the same pic acceptable or should I limit it to one car per pic?

Here's some pics of my 7600 mile museum piece. I'm not the best photographer (as you'll soon see, lol), but they were taken with a really good camera. The pic sizes were reduced when I loaded them into photo bucket. If you find one you like give me an email address and I'll send the full size to it.
Just for fun I also added a couple engine bay pics for anyone who'd like to see what these cars looked like under the hood when they rolled out of the factory. The engine bay is one of the main reasons why it's won best of show at every car shows I've entered it in so far.

While resolution is important, i'd be more concerned with what dpi the pictures are in. 72 dpi is reserved for web, while 300 dpi is the rule when it goes to the printer. If the 2272 X 1920 resolution is at 72dpi, once it gets adjusted to 300dpi for the printer, the size of the image shrinks to about 7.5 in to 6.4 in. That's fine if that's the size of the calendar, but if not, you'll notice the quality will suffer.
If you guys have photoshop, I'd take the pics at the highest resolution in case you have to crop anything, adjust the dpi to 300. Then convert it's color mode to CMYK, as RGB is reserved for web/monitors and the colors will not be match 100% once printed. CMYK mode will give you a good base as to what the colors will look like once they're printed.
Hope that helps.

Once you've had red and black, you never go back.
Only red or black cars seem to fall into my hands, its very odd.
Mint 85, your car is amazing but you need to find a nice backdrop to take some pictures of it in front of. And make sure the sunny side of the car is facing the camera and that the car is framed well. Amazing condition!

Move the car about 3ft to the right, and then get the camera higher and zoomed in so it sees only the pavement and the back-wall with the supra shadow on it. Don't center on the car, center on the car AND it's shadow. (I'm no pro, but that's just what I'd do...)

+1 but also work on sharpness and the background is a little distracting in that it isn't very attractive. It's split halfway between bright concrete and then an unremarkable scenic. Nice car.

OK, Mike - here are a couple I shot in the little hole-in-the-wall town where we had the Scenic Drive BBQ during SILV. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my 20D - all I had was my little point-and-shoot 5MP camera (I brought it because it does pretty good 720x480 video). Anyway, it was a real bright day, so the pics are a little bright and contrasty; the desert ground is really light-colored also, which doesn't help. I can tweak them a bit with GIMP if needed to fix the brightness/contrast (and/or crop the foreground just a bit in the second one). Let me know if you want me to send you the full-sized originals.

Ibto: When I saw your first photo, I thought, Oh man, what a cool pic, if only he could have got the broken curb rubble and trash can out of the pic.! Then I saw your 2nd pic, and I thought: Perfect!! In fact, the angle, and the lighting are even better on the 2nd. And, artsy-fartsy photography stuff aside, your Supra is drop dead gorgeous!! I sure hope I see your beauty in our calendar.
Supracress: I read someone's post before I saw your picture, about the silver grill, and the Supra decal on back. Then I saw your pic. On your car, with that color, and the white turn signals instead of orange ... you did well. Very tastefully done. Kudos! The decal looks good too, and the black solid contrasts nicely with your paint scheme. You followed your own tastes, and made a very nice looking Supra man! I sure hope you make it into the calendar as well!

I usually don't like body kits or mods in this vein (lips and blended fender flares) - but this is one of the best I've seen. I'm also usually a bit of a purist when it comes to the rear hatch decal, but from a distance, this one kinda works for me :)
I do agree about the grill, though. Put the OEM one back, get it redone in gloss rather than matte black, maybe.
The license plate is more appropriate on a Mk3  It always cracks me up when I see the letters "BHG" anywhere in the license number of a Supra.

that kitted up red one is the best body-kitted ma61 i've ever seen, and normally all the kits look ragingly homosexual
but with that one, it's all been done as a whole, and the car just looks great

IIRC only the Euro spec Mk2s got that, maybe some Celica XXs (though more people are interested in the boost gauge on the XX)
I'd rather have my oil pressure gauge > economy anyway

Ibto: When I saw your first photo, I thought, Oh man, what a cool pic, if only he could have got the broken curb rubble and trash can out of the pic.! Then I saw your 2nd pic, and I thought: Perfect!! In fact, the angle, and the lighting are even better on the 2nd. And, artsy-fartsy photography stuff aside, your Supra is drop dead gorgeous!! I sure hope I see your beauty in our calendar.
Yeah that's what I thought about the first pic too, and good thing i was able to take a few other pictures before my batteries died(forgot to bring my spares.) Thank you very much, hopefully I get in this year too.

Thanks :) I'm not 100% happy with the results so I may go take some more pictures this week, weather permitting.

Just a suggestion for you guys, I notice alot of you are photoshopping out your license plates. Not a bad idea, I don't like publishing mine either, but there is a better alternative. For the XX Meet pic in the parking garage that I got in last years calendar, our Japanese friends were really adament about their plates not being posted as they contain the prefect and block number that they live in. So I just used photoshop to rearrange the numbers, shuffle them around a bit. That way the picture doesn't look like its been dicked with and your actual plate number is indiscernible. I find the whited out license plates to be really ugly in calendar pics. The best thing to do of course is to just remove them before you take the pics (at least the front one).

Was too sunny the day we picked, then the weather got bad. As a result all the pics i took look washed out. Tried a polarizing filter, but ended up with some heinous lens flare as i neglected to put my lens hood back on.
Might be ok with some retouching.

nope... all you had to do was turn the car the mirror opposite
Funkycheeze
11-04-2008, 02:19 PM
Tried that, but then the sun was too low in the sky to keep the horizon in a decent spot, while still getting the same background. Would have worked if we could have moved the car to one side, but like 20 oldsters on harleys showed up just as we started taking photos. >=(
