After 6 years of sitting I finally got my 86 Mk2 running. But, the car seems to be VERY slow. I put the timing light on it at its at 10 Deg. Runs really smooth but just doesnt have much power. After 4k it pretty much falls on its face.

What I replaced was:

Fuel pump (walbro 225)
fuel filter
cap,rotor,plugs,wires
intake gaskets
injector seals

Any ideas as to why my mk2 is so slow? I know they arent the fastest cars out there, but I dont remember my 85 being nearly this slow.

i know why, because its a inline 6, i told you get a chev or ford small block and you wont have this problem :)

Umm, six years of sitting? Yikes, that can do a lot of damage.

So you checked ignition timing, but how about cam timing? Also, do a compression check to see what shape the cylinders are in

forgot to mention that, compression was no lower than 170 across. Had the cam timing checked by a mechanic and it is bang on.

However we did notice the cams to be worn, my dad says aprox 40 to 50 thou.

Remove the #1 spark plug, stick a chopstick in there, and check to make sure that the piston is really at TDC. Then check your timing again. I don't think that's enough cam wear to cause major problems.

Make sure your cat is not partially pluged

Did you clean the injectors when you replaced the seals?

yes injectors were cleaned, car has no cat converter

Worn cams can decrease engine power, at least I know that Tire Shredder had that problem with his 84. Does it start up right away (no excessive cranking)?

about 2 seconds of cranking on a cold start and shes going

I bought that motor and used my head and cams, turns out mine are just as worn!

It's likely cam timing or the fact they are badly worn. I don't trust a garage to do anything, check it yourself with the TSRM.

Any resolution to this thread? I ran into this issue myself. Car was running fine one day, and a week later, I couldnt rev over 4k, it was slow to get up, and no power. I could barely reverse into a parking spot. I checked my timing and cam timing to TDC and everything was fine there. No smoke out the back. I was speculating fuel/air or exhaust. I removed airfilter, thats not a problem. I haven't invested any more money into it until I have a good direction to a possible resolution.

Any ideas?

Crack in intake plastic,, getting false air,, then airflowmeter dont register right..... might bad rubber tube connected to intake tube.

Awesome! I'll check that out. That would be very inexpensive compared to replacing a bunch of stuff.

Thank you so much!
