I've got an 82 p-type with 250,000 kilometers that I picked up a couple months ago. It seems to run well. New cap and rotor, plugs, air filter (haven't replaced the wires yet). The problem is that sometimes (but not always),when first started, it idles too low and will die if not revved. This only lasts for a few seconds and then it will idle nicely. When the engine is warm and I restart it, it idles perfectly at 650. I was thinking of trying some fuel system treament? I was also reading a little about the cold start injector.

By my experience with my 82, I don't think the fuel treatment will make any difference. Yours doesn't have an icv. 82/83's don't. My foot has to take the place of the icv I enjoy on my foolproof 84. I bet yours stays running with a little pump and gun. Over time, especially after engine swap, I've noticed reduced cold startability on my car. Nothing grave, just different than when it was newer.

Some have cited possible "leak down" of fuel pressure overnight, possibly through a leaky injector or two. Maybe failure to use new crush washer in fuel line connections when replacing fuel filter. (I could have dropped one and not found it) I'd like to go out on a cool morning and push a screwdriver into the afm air filter, turn the key to run, activate the fuel pump before starting a few times, and see whether it starts more easily. I suppose cold start time switch or cold start injector would be next logical step. There are some good threads that explain the ohms resistance you should read and how many seconds the switch kicks in. Let us know. Mine is a minor annoyance, so I haven't pursued it yet.

This sounds to me more like a problem with the idle air control valve that is different on the 82. I would try removing that valve, give it a good thorough cleaning, test it and then re-install it. This valve is described in detail in the 82 TSRM. Anyone have a 82 TSRM??

Yes! The pump and gun does the trick and it really is only a minor annoyance.

I will try and give the iacv a good cleaning though. Thanks a lot guys.

Anyone have a 82 TSRM??

Dave,

Steve Owsley (sowsley) has a few links in his sig for a couple of the various 82 manuals Can't remember if EFI diagnostics is in 1 of his links.

Here's the pages that should help with the idle air valve: http://www.sfmodelaclub.org/user/1982%20Supra%20Air%20Intake%20System%20TSRM%20Shee ts%20FI-46%20thru%2052.pdf
