View Full Version : Gear whine out of rear end?

Okay, besides the classic celicas, my friend just bought an 85 GT. 22-RE, 5 speed, hatchback. Other than needing a new dash pad and one trim piece on the passenger's side of the windshield the car is pretty solid. When we drove it back to town I did not dare to go over 60. There was a pretty solid higher pitched whine coming from the rear of the car. It was too high pitched to be road noise so I figured it for gear whine out of the rear. Big fix? Something common? Will one of the 3rd members from my 77s fit the 85? Will adding oil to the rear fix it or just quiet it down? Lots of questions, hoping to avoid the answer I am pretty sure is coming... replace it:laugh:

Try changing the fluid first and see what happens.

i had a 84 MKII that made that nose for 4 months then one day out of no where it locked up solid on the road. Not a drop of oil was in it then. i head you can put heavier gear oil in but not sure.

Ford LSD Additive (or something along those lines) quieted mine down quite a bit

My 85 has had a whine coming from the rear end for years. It only does it around 50 to 60 mph. If I go slower or faster it goes away. Is that similar to what you have? I've been wondering about mine for awhile also.

The whine is constant. It gets a bit louder and higher with higher speed. My friend found what he believes is a rear axle bearing sitting the back end in a box of stuff the previous owner left in the car. We are just gonna jack it up and put it in gear and see what happens. I am running by the shop on the way home tonight. I will get some pics of the 85 and the 82/83 we got for parts. The 82/83 came for free!!!

Nope, mine is a constant whine. I am beginning to think that is a bearing and not a gear whine. We may possibly get some work done on it this weekend.

Any ideas on what I might try?

its not a celica/supra unless it does that lol
i think everyone that has one or the other had these problems. im not sure if its anything bad but mine had done this for a while now and nothing wrong with it.

also it does this when i try to keep a steady speed at around 50-60

Yep.... Love it, when the newb's discover these things. This is one of them.

You can TRY changing the diff fluid. Might help, don't hold your breath if it doesn't.

Problem??? Pinion Bearing. Yes it's wearing out.

Not too many options for this problem. A. Try & get the bearing replaced for $800 - $1K (take a look at the online TSRM to see what's involved in disassembling/reassembling the LSD rear diff). B. Replace your center pumpkin for considerably less $$$$$$$.

"rear end whine" as a search parameter would have found several previous threads on subject.

Well, it is not a supra, it is just a celica GT. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a forum for just the gen3 celicas. Here is the car in question.

Today, this one joined the fold as well.

The red one was free!!! The black one cost us 150$ For the price, we got a decent bargin. The black one was missing just a few trim pieces and is a strong runner. The interior is in great shape with no tears in the seats and a new carpet in the box waiting to be installed. The dash pad on the black one is toast, but the dash pad on the red one, except for the gauge cluster surround, is minty. So everything should transfer over without too many issues.
We are going to see if gear oil solves the whine. If not we may just swap in the rear from the red one:)

Thanks for the help so far.

Closest thing you're going to find, is www.celica-gts.com

Just did some poking around in other "locations", because I know it has been discussed here in the past. Someone please correct if I'm wrong.

To my knowledge, all of the RA6X solid axle cars & the 83/84 GTS's w/ the IRS rears, used the T series rear diff (6.7" ring gear diameter). 85 GTS switched to the F series rear diff (7.5" ring gear diameter). Which means it can "possibly" work, "assuming" that you want a 3.58 rear ratio (RA6X Celica GTS's didn't get 3.73, 4.10 or the 4.30 ratios that the MKII's got).

So the answer is sort of no & yes.

Thats what I was told years ago. I sort of got used to it until I read this post. I just try to stay above 60.
