Uhm... you do realize that the speedometers for the 82s and 83s only went to 85mph BY DESIGN, right?

Just because the speedo pegs at 85 doesn't mean you can't go faster. Please don't go 100mph thinking you're only doing 85.

Well that gave me a good laugh........... Seriously, the Celipra did have a 85 speedo and the GPS I had got me going up above 100mph (that was when it was still a Celica).

It your cluster a Digi(lights) or Analog(needles)?

Mone is right. 82 and 83 supras speedometers are limited to 85mph. You can convert over to a later style speedometer by finding a 130mph speedo (came in 84-86 mk2 supras) and installing that.

Do some searching on the forums for what is needed to do that. :)

You make it sound like its a PROBLEM. Honestly, when has going over 85mph helped you? Now I have no issues with people going fast, I've got a heavy foot too, but I don't really think that you NEED to have a speedo that goes above 85mph unless you plan on drag racing the car (where your trap speed would be above 85, and prolonged "over 85mph" driving might damage your gauge).

But like Matt said, it can be done.

Its not something that you go down to Sears and ask them to do for you. You're gonna have to do it yourself or ask someone from the forums who lives by you to come over and show you how to do it. In the mean time, go to some junk yards and look for the gauge clusters from 84-86 supras that have the 130mph speedos in good condition and snag one.

What does the speedometer's top end have to do with drag racing. If your looking at the speedo while racing your doing it wrong. Plus your going to need lots and lots of work to make the car do over 100 in a standing 1/4 mile or "drag" race.

Just putting my $.02 out there.

Actually, the speedometer itself will still work fine. It's the speedometer sensor that is in the back of the cluster that will stop working. Since you have a 82, you won't notice the problem, but if you have a 83+ motor running the TCCS system, the CE light might be telling you it has a Code 42 in the system (ECU not getting signal from speedo sensor). Usually when this happens, the 1st thing you'll notice is that your Cruise Control stops working (the Cruise Control ALSO looks for a signal from the speedo sensor).

Since you plan to drag race the car occasionally, the use of the Cruise is a non issue, but prolonged use on the freeway.... I tend to use the Cruise ALLOT (that's just me).

P.S. You still didn't answer 83CelWA's question... Analog cluster, or Digital display cluster????????? 130mph Analog clusters are plentiful in junkyards!!! 130mph Digital clusters are NOT as plentiful here in the US (Only came on the 84/85 L-Types as options). Canadian cars however, the digital clusters are more plentiful.

you can pull the speedo apart and break the peg off and the needle will keep moving a little farther

This has been discussed in the past already. Later 83's were starting to more over to 84 parts from the 84 model year.

My '82 MKII was originally an Arizona car and had the same limitation with the digital speedo.

I cannot remember exactly how I did it (4 years ago), but after obtaining a Canadian spec digital cluster, I went into the garage very late one night (no family interruptions) and took them both completely apart.

It was like open tach surgery. After going through the wiring diagrams for both U.S. and CDN spec, I swapped in the correct pieces and eureka, it worked perfectly. Also managed to improve the lighting as a bonus AND the trip computer still worked perfectly afterwards too.
