View Full Version : shaking at high speed possibly hood?

OK so I have noticed that at higher speeds, 75+ mph the car has a shake to it. It does not seem to be RPM related, it just gets stronger at higher speeds. The car is smooth then vibrates quickly then smooth then vibrates. The higher the speed the stronger the vibration. Clutch in and trans in neutral it still has the shake. The shake always has the same pattern, smooth then vibrates. No idea what it is but i do know that the hood lifters i have on there dont allow the hood to sit all the way down. The part that bolts up to the hood has a round part on that side that presses against the strut mounting area so it causes the hood to stick up just a hair higher than it should. While the hood is closed i can press on either side and feel it move up and down on the sides. I am wondering if maybe extra air is getting under the hood at high speeds and causing it to shake a bit. Any ideas what could be causing it?

1. Wheel bearings
2. worn front end parts, ball joints, tie rods ends
3. tires out of balance, or tires issue

hmmmmm, well the wheel bearings were replaced about a year ago, along with steering rack and tie rods, tires are about a year and a half old.....maybe ball joints....they havent been replaced yet.

I would get your tires balanced before you do anything else. It's cheap to do and more than likely is your problem. I balance my tires every six monthes on my daily. A pothole, curb rash, or any major bump can throw the balance out of whack and cause a shake.

Would the tires balance being off cause the vibration to come and go even if im maintaining the same speed? I would think that the vibrations would be somewhat consistant and get more vigorous the faster i went.

You can turn off the viewing of signatures in your profile options. He has had that pic in his sig for a long time, and I still find it amusing. Get your panties untwisted and if you are still chaffed, then take it to PM.

What made you think it was the hood, do you see it vibrate?

Take the car into a tire or alignment shop and tell them it is vibrating once it gets above a certain speed and try not to act clueless or they will sell you a whole new front end. It's probably something very simple (as stated before) like wheel of balance or a bent rim. They will figure it out quick enough. Don't walk in with a sign that says "take advantage of me, I'm clueless about my car", say something intelligent like, I think one of my wheels is out of balance, the car vibrates at high speed.

You said the hood struts are touching the strut perches? I don't think that would have anything to do with it.

Jack up the front of the car and see if there is any play in the front end before you bring it in,. It can be tie rods, bearings, and the easy fix balance of the tires. Also of the tires are old the cord in the tire can cause it. I've seen perfectly balanced tire vibrate and cause pulling.

Do you feel the vibration more through the steering wheel, or more through the seat? This is very important, so if not sure drive it and pay attention.

Jrok, I´m totally with you. Even though I see the humor, Pics that are hard to explain to my little sister without making her cry when she is looking over my shoulder should be kept to NWS threads only. And you should still get to see the rest of the sigs...

Try switching from oxygenated 85 octane gas to 91 octane or 94 octane if it's available in your area.

Already running 91 octane last couple fill ups. If i remember right i feel the vibration through the wheel and seat. The shifter vibrates like crazy but it is kinda loose. Yes i can see the hood vibrate a bit but not much, like i said its not too outta place but just enough i can tell from inside the car. I will jack the car up and see if i can see anything loose or outta place and go from there.

While you have it jacked up (and on jackstands), try to wiggle the driveshaft as U-joints and the carrier bearing can cause vibration, and wiggle the wheels to check for play in the bearings. Also wouldn't hurt to rotate your tires front to back and see if this changes anything regarding the feel through the steering wheel. The vibrating hood is a symptom, not the cause.

OK will try that, can't rotate tires lol 225s in front 245s in rear.

i drove over to I-5 toyota today and had them peek under my car, they told me (i have the same issue as the shakky vibration at 75+) its most likely the drive line has some play and needs to be rebuilt/replaced. although it will last another 50xxx depending on how i treat it/ other conditions.

Have the wheels/tires rebalanced to rule out a balance problem and go from there.
