The CelicaSupra forum will be a year old on March 10th and since we've been around for a while I'm kinda curious how you folks feel about stuff. I'm not fishing for a pat on the back for Mike, Chris and I - rather I'd legitimately like to know what you're thinking.

If you say "Yes"
-- in a few words, tell us why you like the forum. It would be nice to know what we're doing right around here. Again, we don't need a pat on the back, rather just tell us why you like about our community.

If you say "No"
-- don't hold back, you're not going to get flamed. We really want to know how you feel here. If you're not happy, tell us why you're not happy. Please don't just type "this place sucks" -- that doesn't tell us anything constructive. If you're not happy with what Mike, Chris or I are doing -- here is your chance to say something directly to us in open forum.

Also, keep in mind that while we do want your suggestions, keep in mind that there are some things that are not practical from a time perspective, or simply because they're not really possible.

We will keep an open mind about your replies, and would like this to be a friendly discussion -- and please....not a flame war. Our group is better than that.

Thank you for your time.

I really love this site. I have owned my car since new and have learned more in one year then in the last 20 years. My car is far faster, more reliable and a much greater joy to drive then it was the day i bought it. I just wish it looked new. I know have 473k kms .. some day it will hit 1 million!!

Well done Nazi-wagon-Malloy and SpeedRicer!

...all joking aside, I think this has been the biggest addition to the mk2 community as far as bringing knowledge and experience to a single spot on the web since the mk2 FAQ was put together. We have drawn in (with our evil mk2-mod mind control) alot of the veteran mk2 enthusiasts with their great insight and plethora (sp?) of application-specific knowledge, brought it into a useful and easy to navigate web-forum, and also given us mk2'rs a fantastic place to hang our hats each night.

I'm very pleased. I think you've done a great job of setting the site up and keeping it real. :) It's a friendly place and all of the jerks have been dealt with appropriately.

This is now the ultimate MkII power in the universe. Muahahaha!

Well one look at my post count and you can probably guess that I love the place :D But seriously, I think you guys do a great job of running this forum. If anything don't take the critism you do receive so seriously. Just because one person complains about how one thing your doing isn't exactly to their liking doesn't mean the rest of us, or in many cases even any of us, feel the same. Keep up the good work guys!

One of my favourite cars of all time and one of my favourite sites.

Didn't know the MKII community was so strong. I thought I was the only fan even with so many members living so close by. Funny I never ran into any (no pun intended) . I've driven by Deans house countless times since owning my first car in '86 never knowing. Nick and George work with a good friend of mine and they never knew about me. Until I joined this site.

Cool cars, cool site and cool people.

Thanks guys.

Not much else to add...but I have to admit that this is one of the most useful and enjoyable forums I've been on. Not only is it a gold mine for MkII Supra info, but most of the people here are top-notch. There's no comparison between this forum and the bullshit that goes on at SupraForums. I've learned a lot about my cars, improved the Blupra beyond belief and acquired the Redpra with lots of help from people here.

Keep up the incredibly good work!!!

Agreed with all the above statements.

This site is frikin awesome, along with very helpful. I've only owned a supra for 7 months and I've learned sooo much about them with the help of everybody on this website. Thanks everybody! And the admins are doing a great jorb too. Keep it up!

Pretty much everything has been said above^ This is a great site where we all get together, help each other, and live like family. Sometimes ppl don't aggree on stuff, but that's life, and that's personal opinion. As far as the site goes, I couldn't ask for a better place to spend my time! And I don't think I've posted a single post at Supra Forums since I joined here. Great job guys! 8)

Yes, great format. I came over from the Yahoo site, so it was like stepping into the 21st Century.

Even though the site is great, it would not be worth a cent without the people that post. I see almost no flaming/slamming. Lot's of good natured ribbing. When someone needs info, it is always freely given. That's what makes the site so good!

With the 'view posts since last visit', I feel like I'm hitting a local BBS. Throw in a couple games like the old Solar (or Baron) Realms Elite, and the feeling would be complete!

We've got just the right blend of conjuring an old familiarity, while staying up to date.

i joined this forum ~15 days after i acquired my Supra. before that, i had been searching around on the internet for information about Mk2's and Mk3's -- truth is, i wanted a Mk3 before i bought my '83P :shifty:

to me, both this forum and the main CS.com site are invaluable resources and assets to the Mk2 community; so many members here have incredibly informative websites (Aaron G./RC.com, Dean, Wes -- just to name a few).

thanks, guys.

I had to vote NO. Because of this forum (and originally because of the yahoo list) I have not been able to drive my car very much. It seems it is always up on jackstands for "modifications" or restoration. If I never knew about this, I'd be driving a slow kaka mk2, but at least I'd be driving it! You bastards!

But seriously, I love this place. At first I was a bit doubtful about using a forum instead of the list, but now I rarely even look at the messages on the list. It seems so antiquated. An searching for info is SOOO much easier/faster. 99% of the people here are nice and very helpful. It makes for a great community. Good job guys!

And Jason, I totally know what you mean. I used to be a BBS junkie :D BRE, TW, and LOD ruled. It would be cool if we could battle each other here...hehehe

I will also admit that I was one of those "Bozo's", that did not want to "change" to a web based forum from our semi okay but sometime PITA Yahoo mailing list (not complaining about the peeps, just Yahoo in general). After being on the list since 12/97 when Matti & Helene created it, I was very reluntant to change (if it wasn't broke, don't screw with it). After 1 week of the Forum & getting over my fears that the "stupid" noise ratio was going to rival that of the SupraForums (which obviously has not happened), I finally saw the light!!! Thanks to Stephen & Mike for going forward w/ this, despite the fact that many others like myself on the Yahoo list were relunctant to change. Now of course, many of the big name/high profile guys have migrated here. Just within the last month or so, 2 more peeps from the list (James Sanchez & Mike Lewitz) have finally made it here. Now if we can just finally get TomD to start posting here, more newbies will be having headaches trying to figure out what he's trying to say.  (FYI, he is in the members database).

Keep up the good job guys!!!! I also agree that moving to this format also makes me feel that I've moved on into the 21st century!!!!

A couple of MKIII peeps have told me that with all of the chattering we have here, we seem pretty down to earth and are actually "pretty normal". And they were very impressed with that.

This forum is great! I don't really have any complaints.
Other forums have too much noise and not enough good content, but we don't seem to be having that problem here.
I was also on the Mk2 Yahoo list since the day it started. I don't read it anymore, it just seems too outdated now.

I've owned Supras for 16 years, but only started to work on them and really learn about them after I found out about the worldwide community of Supra lovers on the internet in 1997. I've learned so much about the Mk2 since then, and my Supras are in better shape, faster and handle better now than they did when I got them. It's all because of the great people out there that share their knowledge.

Started out on the yahoo site like most others. Then the knowledgable, helpful peeps started to post less and less over there. Where did they go? With out high speed at home (only here at work) I wasn't able to find this site until it had been up for a few months. What a relief, like I was ready to sell out and get back into trucks. jk Anyway, this site is so much better (dissing yahoo, not the peeps there) there is NO comparison. The seperated subject matter is the best, no searching for what you're looking for, etc, Outstanding job admins.

very well put together, and well maintained.

Yes, I love this site! This is now the first place I look for information about Supra's. The 1000+ posters (you know who you guys are) have been really helpful (even when they do flame me). But the same is true of every user I've had contact with here. From what I can see, this is one of the most cohesive group of users anywhere on the net.

You know, I think we're on to something here: Perhaps the key to world peace is to get all of the world leaders driving MKII's ... give them all something in common to work together on!

But seriously, I love this site! The only content suggestion I'd make is to improve the top level page, and emphasize the link to the forum. Yes, it is the first thing, but make it bigger, and say something like

<h3>For the biggest and best source of Toyota MKII Supra information on the net <a href="http://www.CelicaSupra.com/phpBB2/">Visit the CelicaSupra.com Forum</a>!</h3>

Using h3 tags and choosing these words a bit more carefully (and specifically) will improve placement in search engines (which is how I found this site), and it will also make it easier to find the forum. The first time I visited the main page I almost missed finding the forum -- and THAT would have been a real shame! This was just because I had already visited a lot of seemingly useless sites, and so I was skimming pages very quickly though. Also, realize that many searchers aren't looking for "MKII Supra", but something more esoteric like "supra 84 OR 1984 +parts +interior" or some such thing on google or elsewhere.

But kudos to the creators and administrators! Great job! Keep it going!

The site is actually very well exposed on all the major search engines. There will be the occasional phrase that the site does not rank well with, however it's nearly impossible to anticipate what a search engine user is going to type in for keywords. Some folks enter some rather obscure text, expecting a good result...and unfortunately that person cannot be accomodated.

If you take a close look at the front page of the site: www.celicasupra.com you'll notice a few things....

1) There is a big banner on that page, toward the top of the table that says FORUM in a large font. Far more effective than a text link, and it was chosen in favor of a large text link because that simply would not have been very attractive (considering the effort that went into making a tasteful layout).

2) Believe me when I tell you that search engine spiders (robots) do not care about H3 tags. They ignore size specifications in regard to text, and modern day code authors seldom use <h1> <h2> <h3> tags. Other than drawing attention to the link, it achieves very little else. Note the redundant link to the forum within the scrolling Web Blog on the front page of the site. Surely you saw both the banner and the text link to the forum there?

3) To this day, relevant text on the page combined with link popularity and properly structured code are still the most important components in achieving a good search ranking.

4) Keywords have been carefully chosen and placed within a meta tag structure that I have proven to be very effective in security a good search ranking.

Thank you for your input and I'm glad you're enjoying the site and the forum. We've got a great group of people here, with enough combined knowledge to solve just about any issue with these cars.

Thanks, Stephen, for the detailed reply! I don't want to belabor the points, mostly because I'm an atypical net user (textually biased that is), but I would like to point out why I had trouble finding the forum link, as that might be helpful to somebody (if they are wierd, like me anyway ;-) ). I've interspersed replies to some of your response below:

Fred,
I wrote the meta tag structure below, however the keywords (along with the title) were carefully chosen by Mike Malloy not long after the site was revised over a year ago.

Thanks for pointing it out. I did look at the meta tags a while back, but whatever it was I searched for months ago didn't give this site a very high ranking. I wish I'd kept exactly that search string so I could show you. I found a MKIII forum before I found this one.

Yes, I know it is hard to stay highly ranked - the rules keep changing - and then some bozo comes along and searches for the wrong thing (pointing at self here)! I gave up trying to engineer my sites into high rankings a long time ago, since most of my business comes from word-of-mouth referals anyway.

Actually, I never realized that was a link to the forum until you told me! I thought it was just a nice header graphic! My eyes aren't so good at low contrast resolution (I'm looking at the front page now in another window), so I'm not sure if there is a highlight line around that image? Also, I never noticed the word "FORUM" in the image before ... but I've only visited the top level page 3 times (right now being the third time): on my second visit, I hunted around for the link to the forum for quite some time, never noticing the header was a link, and focusing mostly on the navigation bar on the left. The words "Mailing List" there through me off track (I wasn't looking for a mailing list, I was looking for a forum) until I saw the "phpBB2" in the status line when I slowed down and looked at each Navigation link ... then I bookmarked it, and I've gone directly to the Forum every time since then.

Yeah, modern day html authors other than me! I'm a very textually oriented guy, ignoring most of the images and graphics most of the time! :? Have you looked at my personal web page? Do you see any graphics there??? I have photos online, but other than that my pages are mostly text, and high-contrast to make them easy on my eyes! But I still love the layout of this site (CelicaSupra.com), and the colors (in subSilver) are pretty good in terms of contrast and resolution. [BTW, I had LASIK vision correction to 20/20 a few years ago and it worked great for the most part, but ever since I've had trouble reading low-contrast text ... a personal problem, I know, but relevant to this discussion.]

(ps: I wonder who the 1 person is who said "no" on the poll, but didn't want to take the time to say why?)
Me too. Maybe they voted no because they can't figure out how to post anything!

I like the breakdown of the catigories the most (though i think one should be created called "mystery noises and vibrations") i would like to see more how tos. i have the haynes and chilton manuals and they only hint that there is an mkII, in the descriptions they tell how to work on a mkIII. i know the main site has a faq section, maybe that's were the how tos can go.

other than that the forum is awsome.

I have meet some really good people here and have learned more about MKII"S than I thought possible. I have noticed a few requests for dedicated HOW-TO's/FAQ's/re-engineering pages. All it takes is for a member who has some spare time to perhaps glean through the posts, consolidate the text, and build a page. The LOOONG topic on TRD cams would be a good spot; there was an INCREDIBLE amount of "everything you ever wanted to know about cams..."
that could be organized to one document.

Any volunteers?

A suggestion I have, without knowing the nuts & bolts of implementation, would be some way of better organizing the "For Sale" section, with perhaps a form filled out, so that info like "location" would be immediately apparent.

This forum has been incredibly free of flame wars and OT junk, which is a major strength. I have been a member of lists and forums that became a waste of time when the burning came. The most effective solution I have seen to date, is to just ignore the flamer(s) as if they did not exist. I know it can be hard; I have been burned myself - once or twice I have even deserved it. BTAIM, harsh responses just escalate, cool responses extinguish.

Keep up the most excellent work, and

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!

It's a great forum. A few suggestions:

1. The cs.com shop that many have mentioned would be nice and help bring income into the site for further expansion. Using cafeshops or similar would make it easy on the site not having to actual carry any products in stock or take orders.

2. Some are very hostile towards newbies. I wonder if SEARCH could answer everything, what would we talk about? Some forums have a newbie section where newbies can post without getting flamed.

3. Make the vendors help pay for anything that the site needs! A vendor section where they can post sales and such (paid) would be good.

The forum is great. This site has been extremely useful to identify which parts work best and venders that still provide parts for our aging cars. This is extremely useful since people in my area only seem to know how to modify old Chevelles and Civics. The only problem that I have is that my wife does not understand why I want to spend so much money on an old car. I didn't have that problem until I started to read the forum.

Tanya

yeah I 2nd the "newbie section" notion, I feel bad people getting flamed for not knowing what to do sometimes and sometimes it can take forever to find what you're looking for in search. he people who get flamed on for not using search are probably the ones who never come back
:(
and that's no good, we want more people right?

if we did start putting up more articles, i would be willing to contribute a write up on front-to back restoration for the supra, covering almost every area that tends to rust (unless it is rusted beyond repair, as my car is pretty close)

as well as stuff on other upgrades i plan to do, and a v8 swap eventually

great forums though

Wonderful forum. Lots of great information, great people, great cars!

But, where are all the ladies! I wonder how many women there are in this forum. I only am aware of two. Perhaps a poll could answer that quickly.

My suggestion: I know posts now have a 45 day post-life (I think). Make a tool, so the author of a post can delete it if he/she chooses. Or is that already available and I just don't know?

Hey Gang,
This site is nothing less than what MKII PEOPLE NEED....What they don't need is useless banter, most people don't sit at a computer terminal all day, I wonder if some of you sleep??!!? 1700 plus posts....God Bless you but....you need a hobby! or a job! Seriously I can't seem to get here often enough to reap the benefits of the site. It is constantly growing and moving on.
Don't get rid of old posts...form an archive. Don't "burn" less than popular posts...Embrace the fact that while countless MKIIs are driven to the dirt. These people show interest in making their MKII better! Most members are not certified mechanics, don't own a torque wrench, don't know what "Q" even stands for. Some folks want to paint their car Orange, Some want a moonroof, or racing stripes, or even anti-lock brakes....Take them in...I personally would not buy anything TOYOTA sells today, I personally believe we own the FINEST of the Supras, We need to be preserved as a group!
Don't believe me....When was the last time you heard someone brag about their bone stock MKIV? they're junk!!! at least without the aftermarket...I thought about buying one instead of a 928 for about 3 seconds and then asked myself if I had been sniffing glue.
That's how I feel about it , my 2 cents as it were.

I'm glad you like the site, it's turned out to be a great place for people all over the world to share knowledge (which is why we set it up in the first place). That being said...Some folks are going to post more than others. Please do not let this bother you. Some folks visit the site a lot more than you do, and because of it they post more.

Idea: instead of complaining about the "banter", how about you come to the forum MORE? :)

Ok...ummm. After all the efforts I've put into the forum, and us setting up the FAQ and setting up the automatic prune feature on the For Sale and Wanted section...what in God's Green Earth makes you think anyone is getting rid of old posts? Did you notice the new FAQ section on the forum? Does that look like we're tossing out old posts? The only sections that are getting automatically cleaned out are For Sale and Wanted.

Ok...that's a matter of choice, all of it. I agree with you. However, either you're on your soap box right now or you're trying to tell us that we've been turning people away? I agree about the MkII Supra being one of the finest cars Toyota has produced.

Superior to a MkIV? Eh...I have a MkII and I've driven a few MkIV Supras. Rather than debate that with you, I'll just say that I don't agree with you.

and to steal billym's line, viva la 1800+ posts.

i have a hobby, and i live in a cold miserable country.
if you live or have lived any where that has a 6-7 month winter you know that screwing, tv, and cars are your hobbies during wintertime.
well, unless your one of those freaks who enjoys cold weather.
and since i dont watch Tv, ever, i have to do something, and i figure on here i learn as i visit.

this forum rocks, if you dont like the direction you feel its going in, change it, were a small enough community that changes can be made, unlike supraforums, or chevytalk.

and mkII better than mkIV... or for that matter 928 better than mkIV... hehe, im gonna hush here, but um, lets just say i think your wrong. :)

Bought my first MKII in 03. I was the very lucky 2nd owner of a red P-type. In 05 I heard about this site and loved it! I felt like I was fumbling in the darkness before then. Most of the tech. talk is way above my head but I've learned plenty and made friends. The enthusiasm for MKIIs is wonderful and the mods suggested give it the power to keep it in the fast lane.

RE: noobs---people should be patient and teach them how to search. But if everybody searched there would be no more posts at all since all the info is out there. Also, people need to chat simply because they're people.
Also, some questions asked get conflicting, partial, confusing and vague answers. Then, the thread goes south and turns into a big argument complete with name-calling, ect. My pet peeve is posters who don't even try to spell, punctuate or use capital letters when called for.Their run-on sentences take a long time to decipher.

All in all though, there's a lot of cool people on this site but hey---if they have an MKII they must be cool.
The good-natured ribbing and joking is quite enjoyable, too. Maybe the best part. Good to have a laugh now and then.

Jeez, I just read through this whole thread, and believe it or not, everything still sounded pretty relevant and fresh. I was too tired to notice the date. I didn't notice until the "holy thread revival, Batman" comment.

I think the noobs (I'm still one) would benefit from having the ARCHIVE link posted prominently, as it enables very fast cruising through past threads, albeit without pictures. I don't know how to post hyperlinks, but it's here:
http://forums.celicasupra.com/archive/index.php/

I suppose it's linked to the main page, but I only found it once when site was down...don't remember where. It seems to be old stuff, but I like the format Anyone agree?

Yes it was me. i could write out sooooo much of why this forum is not the best in my favor. But its not really the forum. Its the people. this forum the construtive part of it kicks but. like the layout is awsome. couldnt be more happyer with it. its the people that mess it up.
Like example, the next guy that post up LOL will correct all of my spelling for me cause he/she thinks i dont know how to. well the truth is that im typeing fast and want to send the info over the internet fast. this web site is for learning about supra's and sharing other peoples supra expirence's. Sorry im not the best speller but hey my point is getting across right? lol

I see so many people with 1000's of post. and they are sitting online BS'in about supra stuff witch is cool and finding the cheapest way on how to do things and it seams to me that those are the type of people that dont really work on there cars, yet im not trying to say they should. or even have to for that matter.

and theres those type of people who have a lot of post that have really nice cars and have invested in them and use this forum to learn about what they can do to there cars.

thats what i like to do: if i have a problem out of the blue. Im going to hope on line and do a little search ing and if i cant find the info that i am looking for then im going to ask the question. And then the next post is some one saying with a lot of post on there records " hey try using the search button" cause naturaly they have seen this post with there own eyes and love to rub it in. i dont want to spend hours looking for the answer to one simple question! Do you? i'd rather be spending time driving my favorite supra LOL or even spending time with my family. ????????????HELLO

and then theres the guys who fly under the radar and answer your question with no problems. those are the type of people who make me happy that can help me out. If some one asked " Do these cars rust any where on them" I wouldnt even post Look in the search you dumb ass. No, my first post would be yeah they do rust around the hatch on most supras LOL its a designers flaw. and thats that.

im getting tired of typing now and want to keep looking around the other parts of this forum now so im going to stop gibber gabing.

ummm my 2 cents lol

i bought my car 3 years ago, the first thing i did was buy a repair manual (chilton's) the second thing i did was find this web site, the third thing was getting rid of he chilton's manual. there is more collective knowledge about our obscure car here than any where else, and a lot of great people too. love the site! feel like a crack fiend going through withdrawals when its down!

This is the only website I am a member of. Plenty of good floks and allot of helpful things can be found here. So far, the flaming that I can remember only gets put on the people that realy deserve it...like the buttmunch that drove his Toyota pickup onto the hood of the Supra he locked up. People are great and the forums are very user friendly...sep for the search button. Have to spend hours looking for stuff and when ya dont find what yer looking for, ya post and still get jumped on by the "Use the search button" police. Ive learned to just ignore them, but they can at some times be a little overbearing to new folks. I havent been a member as long as many here, but I still feel like I am part of the family...even family members bicker and yell at each other. Id say this place is like a second home for me. I work, play EVE online and read the forums when Im not watching movies and playing with the kids. Keep up the good work!

Just found this and voted no. I know should of done it like 4 years ago but oh well. I really miss the old layout prior to v bulliten but thats more personal than anything. As far as the people go on this site I belive I can honestly say this is the best car forum anywhere on the world wide web. People are helpful, friendly and bickering seems to be at a minimum. I think the site could be streamlined more and thats really my only beef with the forum.

That forum is great! I can remember, when I was registered the first time here, it was in 99 I think, there was one member, who sent me a complete scan of the repair manual! I still have it, although i had to give away my last MKII in 2003.

It was Paul Adams i think... Is he still here? Thank you very much!
