Open element filter or no?

What kind of luck have you guys had with finding/using an open element filter vs the stock ones at the parts stores? So far I've found a K+N for about 45 or so, but I'm always interested in my options. Who's running what and are any gains noticable?

I'll second the testimonial for Aaron's intake pipe and open element kit at RabidChimp. I've even had a guy in a Porshe Boxter stop me on the road and comment on the good sounds coming out of my engine compartment. The header, high flow cat and 2.5" cat back ending in a stainless magnaflow twin pipe don't hurt either.

I posted on SupraForums...I have a new intake system coming out in about 2 weeks. I currently have just the filter on my car, and a client's car....the full piping will be here shortly. There is definitely a change in throttle response..and low end power. This is just with the filter alone. Read more about my products here:

BTW: without some major mod's to the rear suspension(IE: removing) the camber will haunt us until the end of time.

The rear camber problem will be addressed in the future...as the posts says. I agree Aaron has some nice stuff, but I'll allow you guys to make your choice based on my dyno sheets and Weapon*R's quality rep. And as for prices....mine will still be cheaper.

Actually, it's from the removal of the resonator, it's a "side effect" if you will, it causes a "bumping" affect in the hp rating, makes it rougher, not as smooth. It also creates dips in the chart.

IMO without some kind of a 'cold air box' I'd go without the open element filter. Sure looks good though.

Well, If you look at a stock filter box, the intake for it is right over the radiator.. in an area where (in my opinion anyway) the only real airflow to it is thru the rad... With a cone filter, you can take a piece of ducting, and run it from a source of cool air and have it dump into the area of the cone filter... Thats what I am planning to do as soon as I get my Filter from Aaron.

or just cut that little tab off on the stock air box that keeps it from rotating then slide the thing over about 90 degrees and suck air in from that hole in the unibody. It draws air in from the wheel well there, which is a great source of cold, dry air. This hole is too small on the 82/83s though and its nice to have some piping to force only outside air to be injested.

rather than open air, I opted for a drop-in K&N filter, turned the airbox over, cut a hole through the metal benath and attached a 3' PVC pipe with an angled end, for a sort of cheap ram air system. At the same time I changed the exhaust to catless 2.5". These two things together significantly improved throttle response, and I have beat a couple of later MK IIs since then (they should have a good 10hp on my 82), so I think it was worth it. We tried an open air element on a celica (22R-E) once, and it made a difference to the sound, but not noticable performance difference. I think an intake/exhaust upgrade combination is likely the best idea.

I posted it on SupraForums...that immediately after the intake is released...that a cold air box will follow. If you get the Dragon Filter with the intake..you can actually take advantage of the available heat shield and ram air kit. Check it out on www.weapon-r.com

I was not aware of the hp bump regarding the removal of the resonator... but I think we might be able to work through that with some pipe size tuning. I'll look into it.

For those of you who have replaced the stock intake pipe with the RabidChimp one, and used their open filter too, just how difficult is it to swap these out? Please remember I am not mechanically inclined, for the most part.

Speaking as somebody who has almost no mechanical experience, but is learning, the air filter side is easy... the hardest part for me was getting the stock box out. I'd imagine the pipe wouldn't be that hard (it has the bings for the sensor hookups on in, right?). I've got my intake apart right now (repaint valve covers), and it wasn't that bad.

10 minutes at most?

Just unhook the piping, remove the AFM for the easiest way to get to the bolts under the filter box to take ot off, replace with filter and replace AFM. Also it's not time to put the new "over engine" pipe on.

just cut a hole through the front...attach this thing to the AFM..and run the duct through the hole to the lower part of the bumper...hope that made sense.
