Our cars rust from the inside out so its probably much worster then you think. Water usually gets inside the hatch and settles and rusts right thru. Sand it all down and see how bad it is. Check the inner part of the hatch where it latches to the trunk, that section usually rusts right thru and water gets into our trunks and the spare tire compartment starts to rot. Good luck.

If you don't mind the work of cleaning it afterward, a can of asphalt undercoating works great!
However, it sets like road tar, and requires scrubbing with gasoline to remove. RustCheck (TM) works good, but you have to renew it often if its on an exposed surface.

www.por15.com
Works like a charm. Only bad part is it takes awhile to dry. Alot of people here have used it including myself.

Yes it is, just checked. Go to the black"International Orders" bar on the upper right side. Click on that, and 2 choices for Canada show up.

If you are rusting around your window seals good luck. I had rust around my seals, the rust only showed in one place but upon removing the glass I realized that the whole window "ledge" was rotting away. I tried sanding and por15, it held for a year and then started looking like crap again. Seeing as it was the only rust on the car anywhere I opted to get a new hatch from a junk yard and start from scratch.

The hatch cost me about $100 without a core charge, it would have cost $75 with a core. Paint cost about another $100

they sell a rust converter at canadian tire...called "rust check"
i havent tried it yet, but i bought one bottle of the spray on, one of the brush on, and as soon as spring comes, im going to douse the inner body panels with it.
id suggest trying it on a body part thats rusting, and see how it works for you... its cheap, 6-7 bucks a can... lil better than spending an ass load for POR 15, although POR has a known reputation, this stuff isnt as well known.

I don't know if you guys in Canada have Home Depot's-but if you do there is a spray paint that is 95% zinc and according to the can has the galvanizing properties of cold application. So clean up the rust w/ a wire brush or sand paper ect-put an acid [lime away, clr, naval jelly] on to neutralize rust and than spray some zinc it on and than paint! the zinc will rust away before the sheet metal is affected-new cars have galvanized sheet metal, so no rusting until the zinc has all its electrons]?] removed. the zinc it was in the electrical dept for out side piping/machinery.
Hope this helps bri. The POR-15 seems like a helluva lota work!!

cold galvanizing compound will not hold a coat of paint, and will not work on metql that isnt 100% clean
its best for treating the 'inside' of patch panels that you cant get to after it is welded in (like a patch in a rocker)
www.eastwoodco.com has that, a rust encapsulator that works better the POR15 (in my experience - it is less work too), and a heavy duty anti rust wax that you can spray in non visible areas to 100% stop and prevent rust (after cleaning a bit - its like undercoating kinda stuff)
