This is my 85 silver car, most of you have seen pictures of it, and up till now it's just been the daily driver. About a month ago i was in an accident, and just recieved the payment money to get it fixed. Fortunetaly, i worked at a body shop and have friends still in the business who are going to help me fix it up. Anyways, instead of paying a body shop to fix the minimal damage from the crash, i'm going to have it painted completely, sense i have been planning on doing that anyways. I figured i would make a thread to document my progress and show you guys how i do. Don't expect anything on par with most restoration threads on here, but i am gonna do my best with what money allows.
Here are pictures of how the car sit's right now:
Notice the off colored fender:

Nobody's car. That is a photoshop i did. There is no one that has done a two tone silver/black car, at least on this forum. Closest is someone on the east coast with a grey/silver car. And those are sportmax 002 16x8 rims in graphite grey.

It is mounted via screws that attach to the lip of the sunroof. I will get a picture later. It is actually a bmw part as far as i know. I will get measurements for you when I get back out there to work on it.

Me neither. This project is a huge deal for me, I've done every bit of the stupid work myself, and have never taken on a project nearly as big as this one. Painting is the easy part, getting ready for paint is taking me entirely to long by myself.

Haven't found the wind sunroof thing yet. It's in a box somewhere..

Update:
Got bored with my seats yesterday and today, took them apart completely, bought black fabric dye. Mixed them all up on the stovetop with real hot water, and dyed my seats black. Here are some picks after i just finished putting them back together. Hog rings are of the devil.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l217/goforzer0/restoration%20pictures/DSCN1015.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l217/goforzer0/restoration%20pictures/DSCN1012.jpg

What I have left before paint:
Pulling the engine(tomorrow)
Sanding down the engine bay and all door jambs.
Sourcing a non broken driverside front fender flare, as mine has a bunch of cracks in it where the bolts go.
Priming(this weekend)
Sanding down all the primer for the whole car and hoping I don't have to prime it twice.
That's it. Not too much left. Pictures of how the car looks right now to come.

What color were they before?
any fadeing or dull spots with the new dye job?

They were the grey color that the 85's had.
No fading or dull spots, but I did do it twice. I wanted to make sure they got full color, so after the first time through and soaking for awhile i rinsed them and did it again.

Today I accomplished another project. The seat backs on my front seats both had tears in the vinyl, and I've never really liked the netting back there anyways....
So, I took them off, tore off the old vinyl, and recovered them in new vinyl I got from the fabric store, which is a near perfect match for the rest of the interior vinyl. I also put all new chrome trim on the seats to complete it.
Pictures:

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l217/goforzer0/restoration%20pictures/DSCN1035.jpg

Also, dyed the door panels black to match the seats.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l217/goforzer0/restoration%20pictures/DSCN1040.jpg

Next I plan to recover the side arm rest things where the window and power locks and such are. On both sides. As both mine have small tears in them.

hey austin what type of dye did you use? and where can it be found? i want to do this to mine but i dont trust that dupli color spray paint for cloths.

Austin E
10-23-2009, 12:02 AM
20 packets of Black rit dye from walmart.
1/2 pound of salt(just regular salt, it helps the dye stick.)
You have to completely take the seats apart, as in the skins off the pads and such, it's a big job, and tough if you haven't done it before.
You want to keep the water to at least 100 degrees, if at all possible. The first time i used a cheap aquarium heater, set at 100 and it worked great, colder water doesn't let the dye sink in as well for some reason. This time I used a huge pot on the stove and just kept in on low for 24 hours. You have to give it time, if you're going to use a bucket and heater, 36 is what i would recommend. I think that covers it, any more questions feel free and ask.

Ninja edit.
After it is done, you want to rinse it out really well with the hose or something, then rub it, if any black comes off, rinse more. This will prevent your nice white shirt from becoming black. Also, make sure you stir or move around the pieces every 12 hours or so, to ensure no missed spots.

Small update, I have the rear subframe completely dropped, and am replacing all the bushings, welding on dave's camber kit, putting in the lowering springs and shocks.
Also, I went to the upullit yesterday, and found a 88 cressida, with a 3.91 lsd diff in it. The car had 78xxx miles, and was an auto, so I lucked out, I'm gonna paint it, and put a new gasket in it and install it when I put the rear subframe back in.

I couldn't wait for the group buy for the Ground Control coilovers any longer, so I went ahead and ordered them on monday straight through Ground control. I placed my order around noon, and had a shipping number at 5pm the same day, and recieved them this morning. That company rocks, and the order placement/shipping procedures they do can not be bettered in the least. I will be installing these along with all new bushings and such saturday. After that, addco sway bars, and I get my rear strut bar, my suspension will be complete. I'll be primering it probably the 14th I hope.

I have the engine to put in, the car stripped and almost ready for paint. The head being rebuilt, etc. But I was in an accident, and herniated a disk in my lower back. So at this point I can't barely walk, much less prep an engine bay, put a engine back together, paint a car, etc. So I am going to have to try and pull money out of my butt and pay someone to prep the rest of the car for paint and hope my back heals sooner than the year they think it's going to take. I will have the car done before pnw supra nationals though. While I am bed ridden though, I have been trying to compile a price sheet, for anyone that wants to attempt what I am doing. That way they know what they are getting into. Price update will be on the first page.
Price list in first post.

It finally managed to make it's way to the paint shop.
Tomorrow, Saturday, and Monday I will be there jambing, and priming all the parts. Then the real fun starts... Primer sanding.

I'm going a little deeper with the color change, so more disassembly is required, which is what I spent a lot of the day doing. The 6 bolts on the front bumper are a pain in the butt to get off. Took me a good 45 minutes just to remove that thing.
More pictures tomorrow.

When I finally get around to painting my SOB, I am going to flip these colors... VBlack on the whole car and Gunmetal grey around flairs and skirt, except the grey will be thinner than the black on this picture will be thinner

I hope you're prepared and well aware of the work it takes to do a proper paint job, much less a color change, and two tone. If you're not going to take the engine out/completely disassemble the car, do your car a favor and keep it white.

Got more stuff taken off today....random brackets and bolts in engine compartment, body harness removed, headlight buckets/brackets removed, etc.
If you see in the bottom right of this picture, there is damage to the front top frame thing. Dont't know what to call it. Tomorrow I am going to see if I can't bang it back into the right shape, otherwise I'm gonna have to go to the parts car, remove the whole panel thing, which is held on by I believe six tack welds, and weld it on to my car. Let's hope with the help of my body guy I can repair it...one step at a time
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l217/goforzer0/cdb38597.jpg

Also removed the rear bumper support. (The big black metal thing under your bumper cover.)
To remove this, there are six bolts underneath the hatch carpet/wood/spare tire area.four of them are underneath I believe rubber plugs, and two are under the square pieces of rubber/spongy/sticky material on the very back far corner of each side. You also need to remove the exhaust hanger that is next to the tow hook.

I wanted to be like Mark, and paint the engine bay myself, but, I chose the right color. :zzzzz:
My camera died in my pocket, apparently I turned it on while painting and didn't notice till it died. So, phone pictures will have to do until tomorrow.

First, my mediocre bodywork I finished:

looks GREAT Austin...

keep it up.
That sucker gonna be done for centralia??? GET TO WORK!!

Thanks...

But, no, it won't be done by Centralia. I have a huge list of stuff to do before it can go....
Paint and the rest of the reassembly.
Take the head off the new engine, either learn how to do a valve stem job on it, or take it to a shop and have them do that and install my 264 cams.
Put the engine and tranny in, which involves ordering my clutch and flywheel from George which I haven't done yet.
Install the intercooler and piping.
Taking it to psi to have them wire it and the haltech in together, and tune it.
I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff.
The first meet I'll make with it, is pnw nationals. I'll be at the Centralia meet, but not in this car. Unless I get a magical set of elves to help me do all that stuff instantly.
It doesn't help that next weekend I'm in Hell's Canyon guiding a 4 day rafting trip, so that weekend is out from working on anything. Plus I'm spending about 12 hours a wheel restoring Braids we just bought for Jessie's car. And we have to install the new black carpet, and detail her car before Centralia. I'm kind of busy. :32:
