View Full Version : THE QUARTER PANEL REPLACEMENT
Angkistrodon
01-22-2004, 09:37 PM
This past weekend I replaced my right quarter, something I've been wanting to do for quite a while.
Here is the "new" panel cut a ready to go.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Angkistrodon/quater/f9dbc58f.jpg
This is what I had originally.....every now and then I would spray some undercoat or something on it to make it look like I was working on it.

I'm happy to see you got the quarter panel done nicely. One day, hopefully while I'm in school, or if I can land a job as a helper, I can try and do my left quarter panel. Its been hit hard before, but for now its nicely pulled & bondoed. It's like my turn now to wait forever on doing my quarter panel

Where I cut it we didn't have to mess with the glass at all, only some of the trim......I don't know about further forward though.

Very good job indeed. Luckily I wont need to do that, most of the rust on my car is little spots on the door, and just below the door. So HOPEFULLY it will be as easy as sanding it out, or just buy some new doors.

I think that I have located a rear 1/4, and I was thinking about cutting the 1/4 off of my car to save on the body work bill. Since I have not done this I have a few basic questions. First question is : is it worth me doing this, and the second is : where do i cut in relation to my new 1/4 (do I cut it short and let the body man do the fine cutting, and where on the line along the top where my hatch sits).
Angkistrodon
04-01-2004, 07:33 PM
Well......Before cutting anything yourself talk to the shop you want to do the work and ask them if they are cool with that. Many shops, including the one I work at, will frown upon that kind of work. Not because you don't know what you are doing, but because they will not be able to gurranty the result.
If you do decide to go a head and cut it yourself, cut it so the new panel will overlap the body about an inch to 2 inched, so you can get a good weld. The shop can always cut some off if necessary. If you cut too much, any attempt to fill the gap will first off cost alot more and second not come out very well.
And too the cutting.....the only places you need to cut are on the piller above the window, and the panel below it. You DON'T cut along the hatch, under the tail lights, or along the bottom!!! These are welds that need to be drilled out then the panel needs to pe pryed off. You will also need to punch or drill holes in the new panel that match up to the ones you put in the old panel. These are where you will put the new welds.
Also When the panel is off your car make sure all rust is carefully taken care of. Grind holes in the metal if you need to! Just be sure you get ALL of it. It will be a real bitch to get too much less see after the new panel is in place. Also prime the HELL out of it.
Post some pics of you car now and the new quarter you want to put on and I'll try to give you a better idea of whats up.

Is it a good idea to remove the gas tank. Looks like you didnt in the pics.
Angkistrodon

The gas cap assembly....yes, but no need to remove the whole tank.
Funkycheeze
04-19-2004, 01:47 AM
i'd do it - and i will
its a good chance to inspect the tank for leaks or rust, plus i have a rule about flammable liquids and their proximity to a welder...

04-25-2004, 09:39 PM
that is awsome, i used to have a 1990 rs camaro before my supra and when not paying attention one day i hit the grage pole and scraped and dented the shit out of the rear left quarter, i never knew how ya fixed that kind of damage, but now i am informed, is it as structurally sound as the origional, did you run into any warping problems during or after you welded?
Angkistrodon
04-26-2004, 01:34 PM
It is as strong as the original. I only replaced the outer skin so with the welds it should stay as strong. No no warping it amazingly fit right in.

It came a much sought after Celica XX, I'm pretty sure. By much sought after I mean Rust-Free. Other than off a old car I'm not really sure where to get one.....Dealer?????????? If so It will probably cost 10,000 or so dollars LOL.

Are these pictures still around anywhere?
I'm trying to find a good picture of a clean quarter as there is a place that may be able to make them but they want to see a detailed picture of where the flare attaches.
The company is in Frelighsburg Quebec; www.alfaparts.net he said probably $300 per side...their stuff looks pretty nice...they could probably also do just the lower front and back.
Anyone have good pictures? Thanks

I'm also in the middle of a 1/4 panel job on my 84. I just ordered 2 new 1/4 panels from Cross Canada Body Parts. The application is 82 -85 celica..part #'s 814650f-1 and 814650f-2 ...cost is between 86.00 and 170 depending on if your a dealer or if your forced to pay list price. The rear 1/4 's are the same on the celica so they will work just fine. I'm new to the site and very glad to see so many people share my passion for Supra's. I will post some pics of the panels when they arrive and juring installation. Website is www.crosscanadaparts.com

Thanks Stev that confirms what i was thinkin had to be done. Good deal under $100.00 . i did some searching and can't seem to find any info on the P and L type rear 1/4's . Maybe you can find that tread or dogstar.

That is some sexy body work. And like, not an illusion. I hate bondo jobs. My Black 92 Celica Convertible has a left rear quarter panel that was hit before I owned it, and the previous owner got a bondo job done to it. And not a very good one. Yours is like, the way ALL body work should be done.
OOH! And you're in Richmond. I lived there for 5 years. I miss it. :( Great work on your car and sweet color. I may see about paying you to do something similar to mine, seeing as you're so nearby.
P.S. The abandoned overgrown parking lot in your signature looks like this one off of ... I think it was Brook Rd. on the North side of Richmond. Always looked like there was supposed to be some sort of mall there, but there wasn't. Either that, or any number of abandoned shopping centers on the South Side off of 360.

I still have them in a box so I can dig em out and post some pics for ya. I believe they do go all the way to the door but pics will give you a better idea. They are in fact L type so a little tweeking to get the flares back in place but not a big deal. I 'll do it tomorrow for ya !!

Beer break so I thought I would add an update . The panels are on and I wish I could say it was a perfect fit with no issues but thats not that case so here the skinny
rear line along moulding was off on one fender
rear contour should be in not out on the bottom to match bumper profile
flare install will take some effort but not too bad.. drill and screw and Kbox has the trim
the top of the panel has too much of a bow so you will have to pound on that for a while if you want it to look right but again it isn't way off just needs a little help to match correctly.
feels like 20 guage or 22 g so very light sheetmetal be careful not to warp it
use a panel crimper to join panels before welding
Well thats it the rest is up to you on bodywork and how well you can hide the truth :D Personally I use short strand kitty hair as a base and then a light skim with filler . It prevents cracking and sure helps with hiding shitty welds  Verdict is get them while you can because if you had to start from scratch you had better be damn good with sheetmetal and have lots of spare time . I'll update before and after the paint flies could be another few weeks as I still have some work to do on the panels ...and moonroof wiring etc etc :door:
Some of us with the rusties will have to first make something to weld to :duh:
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/Yotaholic/PICT0243.jpg
don't try and run a bead when installing panels !! First tack along the entire panel 3 or 4"'s apart to avoid warping .
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/Yotaholic/PICT0246.jpg
At this point you have to wonder how in the hell is this going to look good !!
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/Yotaholic/cuut.jpg
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/Yotaholic/PICT0240.jpg
Kitty hair and a board file get you to this stage and now it's filler time to take care of any scratch marks and inperfections .

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/Yotaholic/PICT0359.jpg
I hate bodywork so have a stab at my welds or at my car but I hope this helps someone wondering if they actually fit and let them know that the 1/4's can be an aternative to feeding our cars to the crushers because of rust . Good luck with your projects mine is finally getting close . Cheers !!

Please give me hope and tell me you are not a professional. I can't swing the 4 grand it will take to completely straighten mine out by a professional, so I have made the (probably stupid) decision to try to replace the rear qtr myself after I get the frame straightened.

Even tho' the rear quarter is not a "bolt on piece" I've been told that there are aftermarket(??) rear quarter panels that you can buy (at least for other vehicles(??)).
Was this a "new" rear quarter panel that U bought or U cut a good one off another car??
If U could answer this please as at some point I've got to do the same thing for the driver's rear quarter of Car #5.

Um, slooow down guy.... L Type panels are still available, heck info on them is likely in THIS THREAD. There is not too much work involved in mounting a fender flare to fit on a L Type panel, that is if you can manage to weld it in well enough you'll figure that out!
Not only that but he's talking about the inner fender, which is totally different.

Cross Canada had them on their website until 1-2 years ago. They are not on their website anymore (was actually Celica rear QTR Panels = L-Type Celica Supra). You can try contacting them so see if they have any left - their URL is in previous posts, but they NO LONGER list them as something they stock.

lol I really enjoyed that you put this up, it gave me the enthusiasm to actually restore my car. The hardest part for me was actually finding the quarters panels from a donor car that was close to where i lived. Mines an 84 and the front bumper was trashed, and the only one i could find to replace it was an 83 like yours lol. not my favorite, i prefer the way the turn signals wrap around on the 84's and up, but it gets the job done.
