I'm in the champlain area in east vancouver. My 84 is pretty rusted and I have no $$$ to fix it up. Oh man, I wish I had the money to get an MK3. I love them. Personally I think the MK4 looks really ugly and strayed too far away from the old boxy supra.
It would be cool to have an mk2 supra meet in vancouver though. I'd love to swap ideas about speakers and what-not. Well, if anyone does happen to plan one of these meets, do tell! :D

We just had one a couple months ago, I host them every now and then. The next one will probably be within a couple months.

heh, i've never been to a meet b4, that'd be pretty cool if you could host another meet. but the thing is i'm in chilliwack, so it would be a bit of a drive, plus i still go to school.

they're always on weekends. Chilliwack? Thats like an hour drive, thats nothing! The last meet I went to was in Centralia, WA, that was almost a 3 hour drive one way, I think you can make it

Gas prices are kinda high for my tastes, so I have to stretch my dollar when it comes to gas. Hopefully the next meet will be somewhere close to where I am, preferably Vancouver. I don't mind driving as far as GM place.

You think Chilliwack to Van is far? I used to commute from CHilly into Surrey daily! Try finding parts and/or attending meets from allaway up here in Terrace!
I keep seeing great deals on mkII's and mkIII's in the BC Buy & Sell, but its a minimum 12 hr drive for me, so I have to pass up.

I just joined.
I've got an '83 P type. Black, terracotta interior, 5-sp, 48,000km.Eibach springs, Tokico shocks, HKS exhaust.
It's getting to that time when I've got to get replace the Dunlop D3s. Ouch. Looks like new wheels too.
It's cool to see so many people in the Vancouver area. I'm in North Delta.
Hmmm. New tires, new wheels, new wheels, new brakes? Well, I guess I need more power then. Aahhh! This is addictive, isnt it?

48k? Wow, I take it your seats are in damn good shape then? Your car repainted? I've never seen a black supra with TC interior, I have seen them with the burgandy though. You'll have to bring this immaculate beast to the next meet (early august) so we can check it out!
supraz
06-14-2003, 11:16 PM
Yes, the seats are in pretty good shape.
The car is original so it's never been repainted. I bought it new and have always had a company car. It's hard to put miles on the thing!
I had to pull out the original sales brochure to see if it really was Terra Cotta or if I was lying. The brochure says Terra Cotta. It doesn't list a red interior though.
I'm definitely going to have to come to the next meet.
Having recently broken up with a financially demanding girl friend, I now have the money and time to spend time with the Car!!!! Better company anyways I'll bet.

After 20 years I need all the help I can get keeping this thing on the road.
The info here on this forum is great.
kicknsupra, how does yours survive the winters in pg? More to the point, how does your alternator survive your sound system? Wow!
Hearing about all you guys around here, I was out tonight cleaning the wheel wells so it doesn't embarass me too much.

Supraz,
Can you go ahead & list your paint code & interior code from your firewall data tag??? Have never seen a Gloss Black MKII w/ a Terra Cotta interior, esp if it came this way from Japan. Am curious to see if this was some unique Canadian Toyota marketing thing that was unique to you guys. "Most" of the time, the exterior/interior color combinations are the same on the North America MKII's, just the color names tend to be different between the US & CAN. TIA!!!!
supraz
06-16-2003, 06:32 PM
You know, I'm really embarassed because I haven't been able to find where to decode the data plate.
However, the data tag reads:
MA61L-BLMQFK
202FX31F293W58
I think that you are absolutely right. I have a Canadian sales brochure and it lists the interior colours for the Supra GTS as: Blue, Terra Cotta, and Black.
The actual colour is a browny red. It looks like red that has been faded by the sun. It's not though.
The Exterior colours for the GTs were Polar White, Black, Sapphire M., Terra Cotta, and Torrid Red. If memory serves correctly, only the white exterior came without the black hatch.
Apparently in '83, black in black was not an option. A black exterior was only available with a Terra Cotta Interior.
Tom-aye-to, Tom-aah-to, when marketers get involved, things get confused.

SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another nice difference between the early US & Canadian MKII's.
Paint Code 202 is indeed Gloss Black
Interior Code FX31 is indeed the Terra Cotta Cloth P-Type seats.
Axle Code F293 is the 4.10 LSD rear.
W58 of course is the W58 5-speed.
Yep, on the US 82 - 83 MKII's, Black was not available w/ a Terra Cotta interior, just the Black Cloth I believe.
Thanks for the info!!!! Am still slowly learning the subtle differences between the US & Canadian MKII's (besides the fact that the early US sport models were P-Type's, while the Canadian ones were GTS's).

First, what on earth were you doing up at 3:19AM :!: :!: :morning:
Where have you found the option decode info?
What kind of decals did the P-type Supra have to indicate a sport model? When I got my GTS, an '83, there was a 14"w x 6" tall decal that said (I think) "Supra GTS" on the right edge of the hatch. It had a black background with gold lettering. It was the first thing that came off because I thought that the decal would eventually peel and then I'd have a black square on the paint where the paint didn't fade.
I didn't realize that there were these differences between Canuck and Yank cars!

SliP
Again, I didn't realize that there were all these different options available.
What other rear gear ratios were available?
When I bought my Supra, there were both a white Supra and a Terra Cotta Supra on the lot. When I hemmed and hawwed about the colour, the Salesman mentioned that a black GTS was going to be delivered the next day, and would I be interested?
Well, when I saw the colour I didn't even THINK to ask about options. I bought it on the spot, and before I left someone else was asking about the car. They were really difficult to get because of their popularity.
Anyways, I digress. 4.30, she must wail like a banshee. I had a friend with a 5.0 Mustang in '84 who could not believe how my car liked to rev by comparison.
Now humbled by your knowledge of options :D , were there different transmission gear ratios available? I know at 50 km/h mine is happy in third gear. With 4.30 gears, for toodling around town, what gears do you use for what speeds?
SupraFiend
06-17-2003, 03:41 PM
You have a 4.1 actually, unless you got the code wrong. F293 is a 4.1, F283 is a 4.3.

Hey SupraZ, does your 83 TC car have a leather bound wheel? Did it come with one?
supraz
06-17-2003, 04:04 PM
Yup, SliP has a 4.3 gear set. That's about a 5% increase in numeric ratio. I was wondering if it has the same transmission gear ratios or if they have changed them a bit to accomodate the 4.3 gears. I find at highway speed with the 4.1s the engine is running quite a few revs.
Are there other gear ratios available as well?
SupraFiend
06-17-2003, 04:08 PM
tranny gears would be the same. All 5spds were 3.72 in 82, then I guess in 83 they bumped them up to 4.1. 84+ all were 4.3s and autos were 4.1. So does that mean auto 83s were something like 3.9? Always wondered that, that would be a sweet ratio. I'm actually going to be changing my 4.3 knocking diff to a 4.1 very soon, but I want a 3.72, just can't find a good one used anywhere.

well... that 4.30 LSD is in the parts car... so i have yet to know what it sounds like. However, it WILL be swapped into the '82 L-type, but therein lies a problem.
What do I have to change to have the odometer and speedometer correct?
this is absolutely ESSENTIAL for the rallying we'll be doing.
supraz
06-18-2003, 04:37 AM
SliP,
So you are swapping an '84 4.30 into an '82 currently with 3.72 LSD and both have 5 spds?
From what SupraFiend said about transmissions all having the same gear sets, the only thing different you need is the speedometer driven gear from the '84 donor which is in the right rear of the transmission. The speedometer cable screws into it with a knurled nut. The speedometer driven gear looks like it's retained with a bolt/plate. This would be what ensures speedometer accuracy betweent the different years.
I have never replaced one, but the 1983 repair manual says to "install speedometer driven gear: Torque 8-11 ft-lb).
Just typical though if when you pop it out gear fluid runs into your face
Hope this helps, bearing in mind I have never pulled a transmission/rear end in my life.
Deanfun
06-18-2003, 05:11 AM
i am unsure of what differential is in the '82, but it IS an L-type, and it does not have LSD. The fact that the '84 has a digital dash would have no bearing on the speedo cable setup at all, would it? (please say no, please say no...)
supraz
06-18-2003, 05:27 AM
NO :D
SliP, if you have the '82 transmission, and the speedometer driven gear, it shouldn't matter at all. Even if you don't know what the gear ratios are, or if it's a limited slip diff.
The factory always adjusted the speedometer with the speedo gear so that they wouldn't have to adjust transmission gearing or differential gearing which would be way more expensive for them.
And of course remember than if/when you change your wheel/tires for rallying the overall height of the tire must be the same as the stock tire that came with the car.
The stock tire/wheel for the 1983 Supra (yeah, yeah, I bought an '83, so I got that brochure  ) show that the GTS had 225/60-HR14s and the Supra L had 195/70-SR14s
Doing the math, the L types theoretical height was 628.6mm while the GTS type's theoretical height was 625.6mm, within 0.5%.(the L type taller means it was indicating about 0.5% low). I'll bet that even changing air pressure will change the tire diameter a bit.
But If you really change to different size tires you have to check to make sure that the tire outer diameter stays the same, otherwise you have to try to find another speedometer driven gear with a different ratio.
Whoops, sorry for the verbal diahrea......
I got carried away.

Hehehe... Let's see.......
First, what on earth were you doing up at 3:19AM
The hazards of working Graveyard & a slow night. Will leave it at that.
Where have you found the option decode info?
2 places. "Some" of the dataplate codes that are at the bottom of the firewall dataplate can be found here:
http://www.celicasupra.com/othercodes.htm
The model codes that on the firewall dataplate can be found here;
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/stepho/newcodes.htm
Decals: The 82 - 83 US Spec P-Type's were (on the outside) were identical to the Canadian models, only they did not have the gold "GTS" sticker on the left side of the hatch. Just the "Celica Supra" sticker that was on the right side. And that was about it. All of the "P-Type" & "GTS" references are usually found in the various Sales Brochures, depending on the marketing theme Toyota used in different countries.
Transmission gears. For the MKII time period, the W58 pretty much had the same gears from 1st - 5th & they never changed. Some of these other trannys that never made it into our North American MKII's (like the W57, which had the same first 4 forward gears, but 5th had a different ratio) was just not available on our MKII's. The only thing that varied, was the rear differential ratio's, depending on the years.

i have no idea what diff it has, as i don't have the car yet. I also don't trust what the code says, as the car has supposedly had a lot of work done to it. The current owner states that it does not have LSD, but it feels like it does when he does donuts and such.

I've got an unused set of TRD cams which do not seem to be available any more, and other people want to know if I could take them to a cam regrinder to see if they could be reproduced.

Your knowledge of Supras is scary!
Until you mentioned what MY decals used to look like, I thought that I had one decal. Now that you mention it, there were 2. Sheesh.

It fired up after 6 months, went right to idle and sounded BEAUTIFUL.

yeah, supras will do that. I just fired up my 86 after letting it sit for a year and half (melted some rings in it). On the first crank it even spurtered a bit, a few more and started up fine. Took about 30 seconds for the idle to smooth out, blown rings be damned!

i live in ladner, but the car is in chilliwack (probably not far from cartman). My buddy and I will be picking it up next saturday (we are splitting the cost, etc. etc). It will be driven back to ladner, where we have to start going over what needs to be fixed, and changing the fluids and starter. It will have a day license on it, but otherwise it's going to be under storage. The car will hopefully be "driveable" once we're done with it on saturday, but will not truly be "finished" for several months.
Full time employment now, and full time education later hinder our abilities to work on it.

LOL!!!!!!
Yes, I do collect Supra Sales Brochures. I currently have the following:
All of the US MKI brochures (79 - 81)
All of the US MKII brochures (82 - 85). Still trying to determine if a 86 brochure exists (still getting conflicting information).
All of the US MKIII brochures (86.5 - 92).
All of the US MKIV brochures (93 - 98 ), EXCEPT for 95. Still having trouble trying to locate one. Have not seen one on EBay yet, the ones that do pop up, were actually 94 brochures, after emailing the seller.
I have 1 84/85 Japan Spec CelicaXX brochure & 1 82 Canadian MKII brochure.
I've also got a bunch of misc brochures as well. 78 US Celica brochure, 80 USGP Celica brochure, 81 Celica GTA brochure, 85 US Celica & Cressida brochures. And Toyota Accessories brochures for 79 , 81, 82, 83 & 84. Still looking for 80 & 85. I'm probably forgetting a bunch of other stuff at the moment.
(Yes, I have a lot of "stuff". Not including all of the various repair manuals for the 85 MKII & the 81 MKI).
I may possibly be interested in a copy of the 83 Canadian brochure. PM me & LMK how much for getting color copies of the pages done & mailing it to the US (I would like to have a hard copy in color if that's okay).
