View Full Version : 1968 Toyota 2000GT

Yes I got to experience the Holy Grail of Toyotas yesterday... the uber rare 2000GT!

Some quick facts:

Borne from a collaboration between Toyota and Yamaha.

Total 351 units produced between 1968-1970.

Only 60 LHD versions reached the USA... this car is one of 57 LHD remaining cars.

Original MSRP was $6800 USD, the 911S and XKE of this era sold for $7000.

Ultimately poor sales killed the car off prematurely, probably because of the excessive price.

Present market value is in excess of 250K.

More details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_2000GT

And before I get hate mail... I am sworn to secrecy regarding its owner and its whereabouts, so please dont ask. The car belongs to a private collector and is not for sale.

Enjoy the pix...

WOW Is the Land Cruiser his also, that things mint. Thats a interesting color on the 2000gt and the first time I've seen one painted in pastel. Whats it called? Probably not the most sought after color but a great period color.

Yeah there were lotsa things I saw that I cld improve upon with minimal effort, but the fact remains this is a driver, and its patina makes it look very authentic indeed. Seeing as it had current tags and registration, I get the impression it gets excercised regularly.

Refinishing the wheels and mounting beefier tires wld go a long way to making it look better no doubt. I was shocked to read the Dunlop sidewall... 165 series.

Greg - very nice & thanks for the pics - great job. I had to go back to understand/recognize some of the angles you took. (esp. roof)

Thanks for showing the battery location - I was wondering what was inside (that cover).
Agree w/Phil - I like the pale yellow.
Wow - how many louvers does that car have?
Love the hatch shots - reminds me of a - IIRC a DB7/8
Never noticed (or read) how the GT2000 grill and the MKI are very similiar.
It's great - it's our roots.

I half expected to see you getting at least ride in the passenger seat based on your opening post but still, to be that close to one must be exciting. I always wondered what kind of power and agility they have but will never get to find out. I bet very few people do know considering how rare these cars are and how often they are (not) driven.

I've also never really seen an FJ up close before, now I want one.

Seeing the 2000GT up close helps me appreciate the roofline and greenhouse details of the FT-HS concept.... its apparent where the lines came from.

yeah i feel the same way about the 5lug set up. and im dieing that you didn't post any undercarrage pictures. i would love to see how it was set up.

i did notice the front end had a lower arm that didn't have a strut tube attached to it!

and the tower's in the rear look like it may have some decent suspension back there too.

Original MSRP was $6800 USD, the 911S and XKE of this era sold for $7000.

Ultimately poor sales killed the car off prematurely, probably because of the excessive price.

Present market value is in excess of 250K.If people had just known then what they know now... Looking at the pics and seeing the attention to detail that went into every design decision, the 2000GT had every right to be in the price rink with some exotics. But at the time I guess the Toyota brand name just didn't have enough reputation in the US and a high-end sports car certainly didn't fit their image here. I think that is why sales weren't greater. Sad more people couldn't see the potential here...

I don't know that I've ever mentioned it, but I really find it cool that this shows very clearly where the MkI's front grille came from.

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet, but Yamaha not only did a lot of the engineering and development work on the engine, but were also responsible for providing the highly-polished wood for the dash, due to their expertise with fine pianos.

Kind of an interesting side note I thought. I know a decent amount of the Yamaha Corporations history, and in many ways it's more interesting than the Japanese auto manufacturer's histories.

See the other thread I will be starting in 'Other Cars' for a little history of the 1992 Yamaha OX 99-11 supercar prototype. Kind of makes you wonder what could've been, not just with that car, but if they had decided to build cars along with motorcycles.
