I have started to clean and polish my oem rims and I want your opinions on the paint in the recessed areas.
This is how they started.

The first one is painted a matte nickel paint.

And this one is metalic smoke grey.

now side by side.

I like the contrast of the darker smoke but I think the matte nickel is closer to original.
Which one do you like?

I have always liked the darker paint on the inside, Especially when kept clean. Makes the spoke pop and stand out more, crisper lines too.

I like the darker color. I painted the insides of mine black when I polished my wheels. Well at least the rears, ran out of time to finish the fronts, but I need to re-polish all rims since this winter was not too nice to them.

I think the darker set would work better on the terra cotta car... Nice work.

Well so far everyone has said the darker color. So unless some votes for the nickel come in soon I guess that decides it.
Thanks

OK! Smoke 7 - nickel 0. Darker it is.
Now if I could get my friend over to swap out the roof I could finish this sucker!

I like the nickel one ONLY if you always keep the wheels cleaned. If you only want to clean it once in a while then the darker one is better in hiding brake dust etc.

the one on the right looks better but if it were me id sand blast the non polished areas to make them clean like new and then just paint them with engine clear to make them easier to clean. i may do this on my blue 85 soon.
btw, what did you use to polish them? they arnt very shiney. sand with 220, then 400, then 600, then 800. then grab a cheap angle grinder from a pawn shop, then a 6in buffing wheel and some tripoli compound from home depot. put the buffing wheel on the grinder after removing the gaurd. then wear goggles and turn the grinder on and hold the bar of compound on the ground with your foot. touch the buffing wheel easily to the bar till it is brown on the whole edge. then use if on the wheel till it is a nice black color all around. youll have to keep touching it tot he coumpound during the polsihing process. once all that is done buff with a cotton towle to get it all clean then hit it with some mothers or wenol to clean and protect the shine. they will look like mirrors!

I did almost all the steps you have listed, you are just looking at a picture taken in the shade and at an angle that doesn't show the luster. They may not be mirror finish but they are shinnier than the picture shows.
