I have three sets of p-type rims. Two sets have markings on them, they say 7 JJx14-8 on them but the other set has no markings (as far as I can tell) on it at all, not even the tmc.

Can someone explain this?

Sure, here is an explanation of the wheel markings - hold on, part of it, but I'm still looking for the exact answer to your question.

"JJ" I think is the bead profile http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html
part way down on the page is a complete explanation.

Anyone else want to chime in?

How! Thats good info to know. I just thought that the one marking was abrand name or something like that, didn't know it meant something.

Did toyota have any rims without markings on them? If so what to?

7 inches wide, 14 inch wheel, offset is 8 mm

also, that JWL marking on the other edge of the rim is present on cast aluminum rims. It's the material's grade marking. It stands for "light wheel alloy" . the Japanese ministry of land, infrastructure and transport defined standards for cast aluminum strength grade to ensure safety. all Japanese cast aluminum wheels must have the markings to be road legal.

If they do not have markings, they could be the Shelby copies. Look around here and you will see the discussion on them.

LOL.
I must admit I was fooled by those three letters (TMC/JWL).
I thought it was for Toyota Motor Company.
We all have to learn someplace and from someone.
It's nice to be among friends when class is in session.
Back when, for me, I didn't even know what I had or what Epsilon rims were.

these did come off an 83 l-type car so they might be for the l-type. Any was to tell the shelby's from the l-type other than the center cap?

The l-types had a different offset. These are definitely from a p-type...

I may have confused you. I have three sets of rims. Two sets have markings like in the picture.

The third set has no markings on them and those are the ones I was wondering about.

How can I tell the shelby ones with no markings from the toyotas L-type with no markings?

I thought the same thing until today. When you just glance at it it looks like TMC but if you look real close you can see the difference.

The L-types are 15" and are flat, not dished.

Why dont you just post pics of all the wheels you have instead of typing 1 line describing them.

That would be the better way. I have not had time to take a picture of the ones without markings. I was thinking that just saying there were no markings on them anywhere that people would be able to visualize them in their heads. I guess I thought wrong.

I am going to show my stupidity by this but what do you mean by dished?

Dished means concave
The center of the wheel is the most shallow part
Like a dish or spoon

Deep dish is when you have an extreme lip

on the 14" wheels, the spokes look like this from a drivers side view: /
on the 15" wheels, the spokes look like this from a drivers side view: l

maybe not exactly that flat but you get the point.

Thanks guys. I can see there are a lot of things about this I have not known. I got home late tonight and will check them as soon as I can in the next day or two.

No.

Shallow means not deep. The center of the wheel is the DEEPEST part of the rim.

No.

Shallow means not deep. The center of the wheel is the DEEPEST part of the rim.

I meant to explain how the inward curvature, or "dish" on our wheels is relatively shallow, but still present. in comparison to some other prime examples of a dished wheel.
