Testing brake booster......

Is there any way to test a brake booster either while on a non-running car or when it's off the car? I don't want to pull a brake booster from a yard car, pay for it, install the thing and later come to find out it doesn't function properly. Thanks!!

Pull vacuum on it with a vacuum pump (hand jobbie should work) and make sure it will hold vacuum.
