I think its cool looking. Probably a PS...the fender arches give it away...the pattern would change around them. Still cool looking

Gah!!!! VW guys got their hands on it. Yes, that would be real rust. It's a thing the MkI/MkII watercooled guys are into. Basically, you strip it down the metal, expose it to a saltwater solution, and let it build up a smooth surface rust overnight. After that, you should clear it to prevent it from getting eating the car in weeks. It's "interesting" when done right, but I don't know I would have down that to an otherwise nice E28. Or it could just be REALLY good rust paint (please just be paint).

Check out Team Rust on the VWVortex (or google) to see VWs this has been done too

I think it is kinda cool. Then again i am generally partial to things that aren't done all too commonly.

Well done if that is paint

First of all, those are two different BMW's (you ain't fooling nobody) one is 3 series the other is a 5 series. It really is interesting though. Can you have surface rust and cleared over and then have it not rust through? I don't understand that someone needs to explain to me how that works.

I think is looks awesome.... that hood shot looks great! i've always wanted to do this to a rat bike project or something but i would be kinda worried about if done and cleared over if the rust would continue under the clear and just eat away the metal anyhow... would be interesting. I've got some paint bubbles with rust pushing their way out so that kind of to me makes me think even under clear the metal would still rot away...

I hate to admit this, but it def makes for a great photo session. I saw a few of the Mk2 VW rusters on the highway one day...and it was pretty interesting. I wouldn't do it, but when they hand absolutely sick BBS mesh on the car, it just adds a killer contrast.

Nope, those are definitely both E28 5-series; probably really are the same car too. E21s (pointy nose 3-series) have different turn signals and weren't offered in a 4-door. As toward the clear, it doesn't stop it, it just slows it buy 'sealing' it in. The car will still rust it'self out of existence, just much slower than if the surface wasn't sealed.

had a feeling this thread was gonna be this car. I'd seen it on importatlanta.com before. I dig it with just the hood rust. More than that and its just weird...

indeed.

i think i'll strip the side of my car then pee "celicasupra.com" on it. then clear coat it the next day. :naughty: i'm headed to walmart to get some sanding discs and a couple gallons of spring water to get it ready for the meet.

Hey guys- I'm the owner of the car.

Just thought I'd post up and say the OP is leaving some info out. The car was decently nice overall in it's "previous" state (first photo). A friend was borrowing the car and a semi ran in to him, thus totaling the car (wrecking the front end and smashing the a-pillar and windshield). I replaced the front panels but decided to do what I didn't have the balls to do previously: rusting the whole car.

I don't expect everyone to like it, that's for sure, so no worries if you think it's totally lame. It's my car, I made it for me, so in the end I'm the only critic that I'm worried about. Thanks to those who did deliver positive feedback though.

Cars are just cars. I like to have fun with 'em. You should too.

It's just a US E28- there are countless examples out there. My car is totaled, a salvage title. I just saved it from going to the junkyard.
It's not your car, and it doesn't effect you in any way, so no need to get upset.

Dislike all you want, it means nothing to me, but just relax, because it's an '80s family sedan, and I did what I wanted to it.

And if there's any doubt as to whether I ruin every car I touch, I don't. I daily drive this:

And tinker on the weekends on this:
http://blankmediagroup.com/Pictures/Mike/WheelsNTires/BBW/wholeroom.jpg

Anyway, keep on keepin' on. Have fun with your cars, and do whatever the hell you want with 'em!

-Mike

Mike;

that is THE most bad @$$ BMW I've seen in a LONG Time. Mad props to you as I totally agree with the "build as you like a screw everyone else" theory.

Keep up the GREAT work with your cars...cheers.

Hmmm... wonder if the BMW zentrum would be interested in displaying your art car?

It's down in Spartanburg, SC, if you've never been it is quite worthwhile.

OMG!!! Is that a L6?? I just love those!! The M3 is wonderful as well. Good luck with all your cars. Question, so okay the rust slows with the clear on it but does the pattern change as the rust "happens"?

On one hand, I don't like it. On the other hand, maybe I should do this to one of the beaters. 1/2 rusted out quarter panels and a hatch that has to be supported on both sides to keep from breaking the glass would just add to this look... Then maybe I could sell that POS body for a profit, lol. This fad will shorten the lifespan of decent cars, but might lengthen the lifespan of a car whose life is almost over.

Never been a fan of stretched tires, but the car looks badass. It appeals to the mad max in me. If I could do that to my car, and have the rust stay surface and not eventually eat the whole car. It would be sweet.

So even with the clear, the panals (and the unibody) will be destroyed after a year or two?

I'd rock it in painted form. Looks way cool!

LOL..this is awesome! Cause I have an 85 528e e28 BMW like that one. Except mine is rusting unitentionaly ;-) Its parked cause the frame is rusted through where the front sway bars attach. In any case, this is an interesting look.

Alright kids its time for another Franswa lesson. You clear coat over the rust because why? Because Rust needs high quality O2 thats right oxygen. You clear coat over it and the oxygen get cut off so there for no more rusting. :zzzzz: And as for looks i think its bad ass nice job
