This is my latest destraction from completing my Toyota projects.
I picked this up about a month ago. Now I really have to clean the garage out to make room for it.
I took it to Sound Performance a couple of days ago to see what I was working with. At about 4500 RPM or so the Tech said he heard detonation and killed the pulls. We only got through 2 out of 3 pulls.

The best pull was 203 RWHP and 313 ft/lb of torque

I often catch myself singing that McDonald's commercial jingle... "I'm Lovin' It!"

'85 was last year for carbs. '86 was switch to fuel injection. With more torque, less hp until '87.
Cool cars... great memories.

You got it... Let's line em up. As you can see, I need a tune up (Carb work)

Yeah... Pretty much stock. The motor was rebuilt about 20K miles ago or so with all bolt ons. 1965 289 heads, shorty headers and straight duals with H-Pipe - no cats.
rsdeo nailed it. 85 was the last year for the carb. There were some 1985 EFI models but they only came with an automatic trans. Funny thing is the horsepower and torque were less than the carb'd models. In 1986 the EFI was tweeked to gain 15 ft/lb of torque over the 1985 carb models but still lost 10 hp. And of course the 1987 changed the game for the mustang.
1985 302 Carb
210 HP @ 4400 RPM
270 ft/lb @ 3200 RPM
1985 302 EFI (Automatic)
180 HP @ 4200 RPM
260 ft/lb @ 2600 RPM
1986 302 EFI
200 HP @ 4000 RPM
285 ft/lb @ 3000 RPM
1987 302 EFI
225 HP @ 4000 RPM
300 ft/lb @ 3000 RPM

I drove a ton of them back then. I remember driving an '87 5.0L 5 spd. for 600 km and then hopping into my '83 Ptype and wandering where was the torque.
Very fun cars for us teenagers to race around in.

Torque is nice. This guy I met wanted to sell me a built 306 (87 ported heads, headers, etc.) that was puttin down 356hp & 406 ft/lb torque at the crank. He wanted $2,000 for the the motor and a car (83 Black T-Top). The motor has less than 1,000 miles on it. I had to keep telling myself... No More Projects Right Now!

I have started looking for a fox body to play with....
Cheap 5.0 power> GT40 heads and intake from a 98 and up Explorer 5.0.

You are so right! Cheap power. I almost picked up another one from Cali. 86 GT Convertible with 118K, no rust, needing carb work - asking price $1,800. There was a local guy selling some rebuilt GT40 heads for $700 or so. There are so many bolt on power adders for these cars.
What year range are you looking for?

Hey Sean. If I don't have my Cressida wagon running in time, I just might bring the Mustang to track day at chi2k9

Nice. Back in the day I wanted a 85 pre-FI 5.0 so bad i could taste it. Ended up driving a few modded 82's and a 84 and changed my mind. Would probably have one now if it not for the Reg/then Don 7mgte swap.

Same here. I have always wanted a carb’d Mustang or a 85 / 86 SVO. I was looking at this car and a Dodge Stealth RT Twin turbo. The power of the Stealth felt nice, but I'm glad I went with the Mustang.
However, I am anxious anticipating a 7mgte swap.
