Hey mk2 gang. Just letting you know that I picked up a track/street 930 car. It's an '87 with 26,900 mi (has lots of track mi). It now has 29k mi after drive home from NJ. I've been keeping an eye out for one for the past year. Always wanted one for over 20 years. Last year I test drove a stock 930 that had 90k miles. I passed that one knowing that it would cost way too much $$ to add the mods plus I want to avoid a CIS fuel system which I'm not crazy about. I prefer a traditional EFI much like our cars. :)

Over a month ago I came across a posting about this car at one of the Porsche forum. I checked out the ad posted by a shop selling this car on consignment. I thought this is the car with my name on it even though it's not black which is my favorite color. It's mods are extensive. It was dyno'd at 427 rwhp. Here's a listing of mods I can remember.

Garret T04 turbo (have not looked up its trim and A/R)
Custom Intercooler
Protomotive EFI (this is a big deal for me)
Borla Sportsman 3 inch in/out muffler (sounds sweet!)
Tial 46mm Turbo wastegate (dumped to open) :)
Custom tubular headers
HKS Blowoff Valve
Carrillo Rods
JE pistons
Custom air intake/cleaner
Oil cooler in right and left front fenders with fans
Shorter gearing (2nd - 4th)
Trans cooler (this has an oil pump with oil cooler for tranny/diff)
Kevlar clutch (unknown clutch manufacturer, need to look up history)
Wevo Shifter and Coupler (still shift clunky compared to our mk2's)
Split Second ARM1 Air/Fuel Ratio Meter (will be replaced with a wideband)
Greddy Profec-B EBC
Cobra Racing seats
5 point harness seat belts
Roll Cage (bolt in type but welded at the body)
Strut Tower brace
935 style front suspension
Eibach springs (600/250 and 400/150)
Front and rear coilovers
Hawk blue compound brake pads
ERP rear mono balls in trailing arms
Kinesis K5 wheels (17" x 10" and 17" x 12" with 275/40-17 and 315/35-17)
Fiberglass rear lid/spoiler and front hood
Fire Extiniguisher
930S steering wheel

I worked out the deal with the seller for several weeks, had the car road tested, leak test and compression test performed. All checked good. In closing a deal I had the seller to include new tires. Then during the following week and a half I had to source a spare tire, relays, fuses, jacks, air compressor (for "folded" spare tire), airline tickets, temp tags, etc. That's one of the reason I did not have time to let you guys know of what's up. I've thought about meeting some of you NE guys but had to go west on I-80 immediately to meet up with a friend in northern IN.

Here are the pics.

I have not been driving this car since it's at a shop for front end work (replacing front coil over struts) since they were worn out (side to side play) and to replace the front 275/40 with 245/40 tires since there are signs of tire rubbings (the front fenders are already rolled!). I'll use these 275's for my mk2 later. The rear half shafts needs to be replaced (worn out CV joints). Obviously this car was driven hard (track use) which I was aware of. Will also have to check turbo, valve train, head studs, etc. This car will be a money pit! :ugh: And makes my 7mgte mk2 seem cheap to maintain.

There are massive amounts of win in this thread! That is a lot of car. I absolutely love the wheels. This is the only generation of Porsche that I can say I truly love. The others just don't do it for me but the pure attitude this car has make it stand out. Great choice on the new toy. Hope it gives you as many trouble free miles as is possible. lol

Mike that is such a classic move! Buying a Porsche Turbo so you can convince yourself that the 7MGTE Supra is inexpensive to repair! LOL

Gee, I wonder if my wife will buy that argument... hmmm

Beautiful car!

Mike,

Nice score! Always loved the 930.

Are you gonna bring it up to the Toronto meet this summer??? We could go to the track together! One of the big local Porsche tuner shops in Toronto has me on their mailing list for track days since I went out with them last summer. It's fun to race with the newer 911's with my old Supra.

Thanks guys! I figured you would like it. :)

I'm still learning how to drive it correctly. The hardest part is the shifting. 1st gear is ubber tall. As for shifting it's like shifting an old truck tranny as in having to shift "slow" and its gears are clunky. It's better than a stock 930 which has really long shift throw and mine has a short shift mechanism. My biggest problem is downshifting as sometimes I find myself grind the syncros going into 2nd if I don't do it right.

Regarding the engine, it don't like to be below 2k rpm as it lugs pretty easy. Best to keep it above 2.5k rpm. Turbo starts spooling around 3k and is in full boost around 4k. I think power starts flattening out after 6.5k but would rev to 7k which I would not try to do. I've taken it up to 130-140 mph and backed off. It was still pulling hard! The engine does not rev as quick as my 7mgte mk2 when blipping throttle in neutal. I think this is due to heavy engine mass and different cams. But it does seem to rev quicker and further in upper rpm when on boost. It's like my 930 rev slower in lower revs but quicker in upper revs. The dyno chart shows both hp and torque are still climbing when dyno shut down around 6k.

The suspension on this thing is stiff! There are no rubber mounts in the suspension components as in a stock 930. All suspension ends are spherical bearings. So, it's much more radical than a stock 930 and let alone my mk2 with Eibachs, Konis, Addco sway bars and 17" wheels. You feel everything. It's almost as bad as riding a hardtail chopper. lol. Well, maybe I'm exaggerating.
When taking corners it stays FLAT. Going respectable speeds on the curves on the highway is ho-hum. It's like "Is that all? Give me more!" Very tempting but I know better as I won't let it become a "widow maker" since I used to ride sport bikes. When driving fast you have to remember not to lift the throttle in a turn, need to enter turns slow and come out fast when driving at good clip.

I wished I had time to hang around and visit some of you guys when picking up this car. And oh yeah, the 1st few hours of driving west the first evening was tiring! I drove only 150 mi but felt like it was 500 mi! The 2nd day was a little better but the final leg home was much better but not comfy like my mk2. It's not a tourer!

Dean,
I probably won't be taking this car to a track until next year. When I do I would need an experienced 930 instructor to show me the ropes. Another thing is neither my 930/mk2 are not covered by my auto insurance if driven on a track. Yikes! I'll be bringing my mk2 to the Toronto meet anyway.

Raj,
No other plans as this is my dream car. Honest!

George,
The only similarity is when getting on boost. Whenever I get on boost I'd think hey it's like my 7mgte mk2 and vice versa!

That car is sick. On a completely different level than a mk2 IMO.

I think you have a vacuum leak.... lol

That is one of those 'dream cars', for sure. Loving the pics. Never really seen underneath.

Oh and I agree, watch that lift off over-steer!

Appreciate your compliments guys! I don't have much to say lately since this 930 has been in the shop for the past 2 weeks to have front suspension redone. 5 yr old race coil over struts were worn out and decided to go with different coil over struts which require bunch of modifications. Still have not picked up the car. I think it's going to cost as much as a good clean mk2. :ugh:

Update:
Picked up my 930 yesterday afternoon from the shop. Total cost for front end work was $2800. That's with a huge break in cost for labor.
