I was just checking out "84ptype"s 1980 Hilux and thought I better post a pic of mine as well just picked it up on June 9th. This truck was in the neighbourhood and I'd previously talked to the owner so I knew a bit about the truck before I saw it posted for sale. Somebody else called him before I talked to him, but I showed up first. I took a quick look to verify that I wanted it but he told me he wouldn't sell it to me because he promised it would be there for the other guy that had called him. So I offered him the full asking price in cash on the spot. He said he was a man of his word and couldn't sell it to me until the other man had a chance to see it and buy it. The other guy had asked about the frame when he was on the phone with the owner so I knew he was a Toyota guy and I knew he would definitley buy the truck for $1200. So I called the owner later in the day and offered him $1400 cash. He still wouldn't sell it to me. But he said he would phone the other guy and let him know about my offer. The first guy got mad that the price went up and didn't show up to buy the truck. So I was happy to pay $1400 for the truck.

So here are some deets,
1981 Hilux SR5
22R 5 Speed 99,000kms
next to no rust, barely even any surface rust
the tailgate was removed the day the truck was purchase new and stored away - it was included with the truck
custom made canopy/camper for the truck that has been on it since day one so no water has ever been in the box
the truck is very original, just regular maintenance at the Toyota dealer

The bad
needs head gasket (The truck drove fine but when it heated up it tended to smoke and I also saw some coolant leaking between the head and block)
needs clutch
small bit of damage on one fender and also the rear corner and tail light. Luckily I have a friend who parts out Toyota trucks.

My plan is to finish one of my Minis and use it as my daily driver. Fix up every little detail on my truck and then I will apply for collector plates for it. I will be able to share the collector plate with my Supra so it will only cost me $200/year for insurance for both vehicles.

Both of my trucks

I really need to get some better floor mats and ditch the carpet samples. The stock carpet is in great condition.

I am going to build up the inside as a camper. It's already got windows, a vent in the roof and shelves over the cab.

sweet...I love my little pickup.

They are cool little trucks. Yours appears to be in great shape. Not much of a fan for the the camper myself but to each there own.

I will be posting up some more pictures of mine soon as I have done some paint work on it...(cheapo work but better than primer patches).

Good luck and have fun with it.

I like your truck too. I bought the truck only because it was in such great shape, I didn't care for the camper either. However, my girlfriend was excited since we have been wanting to do more camping. Then I got thinking how great it could be. So I think I'll leave it for a bit until I have some other projects done and I can find a good place where I can take it off and store it. I've located a rear slider window for it so I'm going to put that in the cab and then remove the front window of the camper and seal it up with a bicycle inner tube between so my dog can stick her head through.

I've got the gear box out and the engine apart currently, I've decided to replace all of the gaskets and the clutch and paint things up nicely and hopefully I won't have to do any work on it for another 30 years. I'll try and keep this thread updated as I do more work on it.

I'll be watching yours too.

Cool. I also love pickups slammed on sawblades.

Nice!! I always wanted to find the slightly larger version of these and put a 3RZ in it, I can only imagine how much the 20R enjoys driving one of those sleepers around

Mine actually has the big block 22R fitted from the factory. And it's not bad with the top on the truck. It is stripped out right now, but I am going to keep it real simple so it shouldn't get much heavier. I'm also fitting aluminum valvetrain from a newer 22R and a cam for more torque so it shouldn't be too bad. It's not meant for getting me where I want, it doesn't have to get there in record time.
