View Full Version : Nexen Cp641 215/60-HR14 Tires
Just put these on my MKII and they're great! They are the only H-rated tire I could find out there in a size near the OEM 225s. They look great, handle great, and are reasonably priced. Tire rating is 400 A A. Got them at MAVIS for $73 plus $10 M&B. I had Michelin Pilots before and I can definitely say that these are comparable. They're a size smaller than the Pilots so I can't make a direct comparison but they're very close in steering response and handling. Despite what you hear, the speed rating DOES make a difference in the way the car handles at lower speeds. I test drove a friend's car that had the BFG Radial T/As on it in the OEM size and the handling was very sloppy. Poor steering response, excessive lean - just a total disconnectedness from the road. And this car was an '83 P-Type with only 25K miles on it. If you want to preserve your car's handling, enhance the looks, and not blow the bank, these tires ARE the answer. NEXEN has a web site where you can check them out, or visit your nearby MAVIS store. It's either these, the BFGs, or the Cooper Cobra GT (235/60/14). It's a no-brainer. Good luck!

Thanks for the input I've considering some Korean Nexen Tires. I'm looking at some 225/40/16 and 245/40/16 for the rear and I'll be paying less than you did(73.). For hard compound tire the price is unbeatable. I have a total of 8 vehicle, and tire cost along with brakes are my biggest expense, oooo and insurance lol.

I should have mentioned that when I shopped around for the NEXEN CP641s, I did compare prices online, which were all cheaper than MAVIS, but by the time you added shipping and took into account that most local tire places will not M&B your tires for less than $20 a tire if you didn't buy them there, the online price advantage quickly erodes. Yes, there is an added advantage if you can avoid the sales tax. One advantage of going through MAVIS was that I was able to have them order 4 tires for me just so I could check them out (visually) before I decided whether I was going to purchase them or not. That was worth paying slightly extra for. Regardless, no matter how you purchase them, they're cheaper and superior to the existing competition. Buy and enjoy!
The Nexen site doesn't even list these tires in 215/60-14 :P Guess they gave up on them...?
Tiresdirect says "Limited Availability. We have 3 or less in stock and ready to ship."

I test drove a friend's car that had the BFG Radial T/As on it in the OEM size and the handling was very sloppy. Poor steering response, excessive lean - just a total disconnectedness from the road.
Much of this has to do with the fact that you have a slightly shorter and narrower tire. Though in reality any 60 series tire is like a Jello mold LOL. Next tire you're standing next to your car, push sideways on the roof and watch the car and wheel move around as the tire tread stays put. Now imagine doing this at 30, 40, 60+ mph!
The Nexen site at http://www.nexentireusa.com still lists the CP641 tires in 215/60/14. When I purchased mine a couple weeks ago, Mavis had them shipped from CA to NY within 1 week. I would call NEXEN directly to inquire about availability.
As for the ride of these tires compared to BFG Radial T/As, there IS no comparison. And the width being narrower by 10mm (less than a half inch) is NOT the reason for the better handling. My 7 year old Michelon Pilots which were the 225 OEM size ran circles around the BFGs. An S rated tire will never have the same handling characteristics as an H or higher speed rated tire. The sidewalls just aren't stiff enough. I switched from S rated OEM tires to H rated on an older Celica one time and the handling and steering response increased dramatically. But the ride became so stiff that I couldn't live with them. The older muscle car tires like the BFGs and the Cooper Cobras were not made for JAP sports cars. The Supra originally came with H rated tires, and if you want to preserve the original handling characteristics of the car, which were superb, anything less than an H rated tire will be a compromise. I've had the NEXEN CP641s for a few weeks now and have put close to 1K miles on them and they are a great tire. Totally satisfied with them. They're quiet, have great steering response, give a comfortable ride and look great. And the price is reasonable.

I swear you sound like a salesman haha.
I've got Cooper Cobras, 225 60R 14s on the front (came on the car when bought in June last year, but were on the rear then), and have Futura 235 60R 14s in the back. I forgot what I had on the front, but those had to be replaced, so I got the Futuras and rotated the new tires to the rear.
Those Cobras sucked on the rear, definitely happy with the Futuras. Taller tire makes the car look lowered without it being lowered at all.
Next tires I buy, whichever they are, will probably be bought online, and since I work at Merchants Tire and Auto I'll mount and balance my own tires haha.

I'm planning on going 215/60 R14 as well, but I think I'll get the Federals at onlinetire for $44.55 each since I'm on a low budget.
