the rack and pinion is not hard to remove. Its just two tie rods, two power steering lines, steering wheel shaft and 4 bolts. You will need an alignment after due to any work done to the rack the tie rods need to be replaced/removed.

No special tool is needed. Some of the bolts/nuts will be rusted in place so PB Blaster (better than WD-40) or Krol Oil or equivalent is recommended. I also recommend metric flare nut wrenches (line nut wrenches) to use on the lines (good tool to have). $10 at Harbor Freight http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=99993

+1 on the flare nut wrenches, you will get very frustrated if you try to use a open ended wrench and just end up rounding out the ends.

You shouldn't need help pulling out the RP (I work better by myself anyways).
and for the wheel alignment a.s.a.p. the only reason being is that well your wheel alignment will be out. and therefore the steering dynamics of the car will be comprimised. and there for it will have less stability and predictabilty. you can drive a car with horrible alignment, it's just scarry. spend the $80 to get aligned.
