My daily driver is sadly laid up in the hospital with a bent valve among head issues (85 Celica GT), so I took a bold step and got a “new” car. I have driven 20+ year old cars my whole life, so It was time to up the reliability on my daily and winter driver, seeing as that I am going to transfer to Iowa State this January, and the Celica GT wasn’t cutting it. I test drove a lot of cars and decided something 4WD would be best in Iowa winters. Found this on Autotrader.com, test drove a day or two later and bought it.
2004 Subaru WRX 2.0 Turbo Wagon. I could not be happier with car so far! It is so nice to step into something knowing that everything works great in it! I’m grinning ear to ear when I drive it, as I don’t quite know what to do with a car this new and “problem free!”
Right after I bought it, I took a few days off so the girlfriend and I could go on a mini road trip and vacation. We went up to Dubuque Iowa, and spent an entire afternoon walking and relaxing in Eagle point Park, then ventured into Wisconsin to camp on the river and relax to the scenery. After camping, we visited the Dubuque Aquarium on the way back home just for fun. The Celica was so frustrating to drive as every panel in the interior shacked or moaned or creaked, and something or multiple things were constantly breaking in it. I am ubber-happy to have a car that is getting about 30 MPG and is a smooth, sporty, fast, non-boring and reasonable car! Here are some pics from our getaway:
The car after it’s first wash, back from Chicago where I bought it:

Some interesting pictures from the aquarium. It was much more difficult than I thought to photograph through the glass cases and focus correct, plus I had no tripod and the room was very dark, needing longer exposures L.

So there you have it! In all honesty, the supra will be most likely forgotten about until I finish school in two or so years. I need to stop throwing money at the supra and get a bit more serious about moving to Aimes. (But I will throw a little money at the subie!! :) )

Thanks I guess… lol. I would assume all cars of the AWD variety would be favored around the mountains. I guess I know where to drive to to finds parts if I need them!

They really arent that terribly expensive, and the wagons have much less a chance of being abused over the favored sedans, as the wagons usually cater to the “soccer moms” and grocery getters! :p

I am also looking to get some more aggressive wheels for it. It is my daily, and I am willing to sacrifice a bit of my gas mileage to make it a bit more visually appealing. These were my debatable so far:
Rota Torque 18x8 in gold or bronze
http://www.grip-performance.com/catalog/images/ROTA_torque.jpg
Enkei Ekm3 in Black 18"
http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18868&stc=1&d=1237308373
Rota grids 18" in bronze or black or silver (not this aggressive of offset and width though)
http://topscoob.smugmug.com/photos/464033021_AZxLo-L.jpg
Rota SVN 18" in bronze or gunmetal or hyperbalck
http://www.rota-wheels.pl/felgi/zdjecia/duze/svn/svn_mgray.jpg
These are just a few. The bolt pattern is 5x100 and my wagon would be best suited with nothing wider that a 225/40/r18 tire, with an 8" wide rim around 48+ offset. I would really like the rota grids in this configuration (or something similar to the volk te37) but i Think they stopped making them in the sizes I need. any suggestions/ opinions? thanks! -Mike

Shweeeet, minus the 04, I believe maybe only the sedan only but its on the top 10 list for easiest or most popular stolen car...... but other than that, wicked. They can look awesome with a few minor modifications. hmmm, wrx motor into supra after college..dooooooooo it

No joke, after driving this car around for the past few weeks, the supra can blow the wrx away with it tremendously weighted power and torque, the wrx is NOWHERE near as fast as the supra. Althought the wrx can take corners like a mad bitch compared to the supra, as it should for an awd with 20 years of more advanced technology. But I didn't buy the car for the speed, I bout it for the practicality and reliability. Hopefully no one wants a wagon bad enough to steal one! (knock on wood)

bronze wheels for sure. sick car. ive been looking into getting a newer car thats decent on gas, yet i dont have to worry about issues, or potholes, avoiding parking lots with speedbumps, shity roads, etc. my truck pretty much fits the bill except for the 12mpg. i just love having a big ass truck so much, its hard to get into a car again.

Malloy! Not everyone can afford $18,000 worth of wheels and tires. lol. The rotas have a HUGE following on the subaru forums, as rota seems to cater to the knockoffs that resembel wheels made for wrx/sti/forrester/legacy. I know they're cheap, but im broke now!

I believe in the big brands like Enkei, Rays, Work, SSR etc. They are real deal, top line quality manufacturers. Wheels are important...so I have a hard time skimping.
For a daily...who cars that much about weight? My SSRs aren't that light...but I'm sure if I put them on Pitualas car he would still whoop all the same ass he whoops now ;)

I have been extreemly happy with the xxr's on my supra, but as you stated, with bigger HP cars, It's hard for me to "feel" a difference in quality wheels, escpecialy since the supra rides a bit like a truck anyway. I do like the above xxr's in gold: single size drilled (uncommon for that company), easier to clean than crazy spoked wheels, and you can't beat them for the price. Do you really think the quality is compromisable with these?

In 1988, PAWI made a research on magnesium-strengthened, heat treatable alloy, and came out with flying colors. This made the Rota wheels lighter yet stronger and long-lasting. PAWI began to upgrade its facilities and introduced state-of-the-art technological improvements in the form of the latest paraphernalia and machines that speed up and improve compound analysis, machining, painting and finishing. With their comeback into the Philippine market Toyota chose Rota wheels as their OE wheels, as well as Daihatsu.

These cars really arent THAT powerfull. lol, low to mid 200hp is almost a standard you see on most new cars today, be it that it is a four door wagon and all. I don't plan to abuse this car, as it is my daily and I need it to last me at least a few years. Subarus DO have known issues wioth their automatic elctronically front to rear biasing tranmissions, which is why I looked for a manual (good old 50/50 distrinution :)) I did quite a bit of homework before dropping serious money on a "newer" car.

Gawdd, I think we needs a little subaru photography in the Other cars section.
yeah, not heavy launching, glass transmissions.
My buddy just lost, practically all turbo in the last 2 weeks 03 wrx with 80k kms on it, went from stock 13.9psi to maybe 5ish, like no boost all... goes though a tank of gas in 2 days for just farting around town like any other 17 y/o.
Def. a nice set of rims, if you want exhaust, they sound so nice with a clean non ricey set up and DO NOT put headers on, makes that awesome ass boxer rumble go to a little civic sound, and puts you out a couple hundred bucks.
Hmm, new favorite rims, I know on the new sti's would be ken block's volk te-37s, now you wouldn't be rockin white with 1 monster yellow/green spoke, but if you can find a black set... I'd like to see it on a 04 wrx wagon
Only in a gunmetal silverish, and animated but what the hell.

Join the local subaru forum and find a sti scoop. usually cheap, bigger opening for TMIC looks damn sexy why not eh.
Honestly, rims, maybe a headlight mod, tail mod although tails stock are sweet looking anyways, tint if you want it and a shiney, nice sounding exhaust and the car is set.

I don't have plans for exhaust either. I would like a nice quite and simply car that wont get me in any trouble. If I did venture into exhaust, I indeed would keep the rumble box by not changing the unequal length headers. I like the rumble tone alot.
I saw on one thread on club wrx where a guy had a silver wagon, and he painted the center of his bumper black where the two openings meet, like this horrible photoshop I just did. I wouldn't do this to my car, but I think it's cool and give the wagon kind of a newer Audi look.

Unfortunately, a lot of the wheels pictured look awesome, but I do not have a WRX sedan with the wide fender flares, so while the bolt pattern doesn’t really matter that the are different, the aggressive style and sizes that a lot of the posted wheels come in will not work as a usable fitment on my wagon. I do LOVE the TE37’s, but I could never run an aggressive enough offset to have that sexy “concave face” look on them. They would be perfectly flat, and flush with the lip, which makes them seem like a completely different wheel. Also, Advans are VERY expensive, and those look like 19’s, not my idea of Iowa pothole friendly. The roads around here are HORRIBLE, when winter comes water in the cracks of the cement freezes and pushes the slabs around, and then when the plow truck come by at 40 miles an hour, they rip two foot sections out of the road. You got to love Iowa, the construction season and the winter season! If I am going to buy a wheel, I need to be able to afford to purchase an extra one or two if needed.
I do intend to purchase the Enkei Ekm3's in gunmetal today. The posted Ek3's in "black" coloring are actually the gunmetal color, but the picture's lighting may be deceiving.
Jonathan- This trip was unfortunately all business, as I had to be at work by 2pm and it was about a 7 hour round trip! I may take another Vacation around Peoria or Chicago with my girlfriend, I will have to call you if I do!

I hear ya about the potholes and off-sets. Glad you are going gunmetal! I like some the Enk's as well because even though they are FWD/4WD they have some lip due to the design of the wheel but while in LA I bent a rim like that in a pothole so I totally understand!

Another thought, is that these wheels are going to be a pain to keep clean. The car currently has EBC yellow stuff pads on it, and I'm gussing some pretty generic slotted and cross drilled rotors, and they leave mega dust on the front wheels. I assume the rotors are mostly to blame, but has anyone had good luck with a certain brake pad that is pretty dustless? Hawk pads seem to be the local favorites on the subie forums, ceramics of course. Any thoughts, opinions??? Thanks, -Mike

I've known a fair share of people who beat on them, and sure, they have had problems with their 'weak' transmissions. Look, repeated drop-clutch launches, especially when all 4 tires hook up, are hard on a transmission. I drive my WRX pretty hard, but I don't try to pretend it's a dragster. A little common sense is all that it's taken to get mine up to 153k miles, no tranny problems, still on the original clutch. I'd say the jury is still out on whether the transmissions are weak, or if the brains of the squids who thrash these cars is the true weak link...

Alot of cars get a bad wrap about certain issues/common problems, but the real cause is left to the peanut gallery to decide. Cars like these mostly cater to the younger OMFG Toyyo Driftzz crowd, and they get beat...hard.... constantly. Yes, a car with a rear wheel drive platform that has cv axles practacly sticking out of the bellhousing to accomodate AWD is not going to take kindly to clutch drops from 5k rpm. I would never expect it to, thats why I dont do it. Again, I never bought the car to run 1 second 60 foot times, just a DD and winter warrior. The only issue experienced yet is the slight "piston slap" valve noise right when you start the car, which goes away after a min or so. Common issue of a car with bucket and shim compression return valves. I am still in love with this car. With the 7 or so inches of snow we had, and the new tires I put on the stock rims, I can practacly drive in the ditch to work. :) Only real downside to this car is the low ride hight and clearance, which makes driving in deep snow ruts a bit of a teeth clencher, hoping the front bumper doesn't rip off on a giant ice boulder.
The car before winter storage of new rims:

The only issue experienced yet is the slight "piston slap" valve noise right when you start the car, which goes away after a min or so. Common issue of a car with bucket and shim compression return valves. I am still in love with this car. With the 7 or so inches of snow we had, and the new tires I put on the stock rims, I can practacly drive in the ditch to work. :) Only real downside to this car is the low ride hight and clearance, which makes driving in deep snow ruts a bit of a teeth clencher, hoping the front bumper doesn't rip off on a giant ice boulder.
Very tidy looking Rex ya got there SuperSubs, love the black wheels. Mine's a little piston slapper too, but like yours, it goes away once warm. I've come to believe it's not harming long-term longevity at all.
Switching subjects somewhat, I put my winter tires on too late this year and somehow ended up doing 360s down the (icy) steepest hill in town on Sunday night (I was, uh, actually going up the hill initially -- long story), whacked the curb square flush with the side of the front rim, which made a very loud 'BANG,' to the extent that the strike whiplashed my neck to the side a bit. After creeping the rest of the way down the hill I took it out on the highway and was surprised to find there was no shimmy or shake in the steering wheel and it was tracking straight down the road. It was purely an accident and I try not to treat my cars like that, but I've gotta say, I'm impressed with the toughness of these cars. I've taken mine on a borderline jeep trail in the Santa Fe Nat'l forest, a very rough road, but I stayed on top of the ruts and nothing bottomed out. Again, not something I'd normally do, but it was the only way to the trailhead...
Needless to say, I'm sportin' winter tires now, and I still think I'll get the alignment checked come next oil change

See, now I get to talk about my '02 sedan.
Great cars, I've got 130k on my now with no issues other then the A/C going out, leak in the system someplace. Also on the Original clutch and tranny. Keep redline tranny fluid in it and it will treat you well, oh and no 7k rpm clutch dumps. She is all stock other the an access port and 2007 wrx 17" rims, which are a huge and cheap upgrade from the stock 16's. I'll have to get a photo or two up.
Oh, and nice wag.

Good little tow vehicles too.
That's a nearly 500 lb. motorcycle, plus 100 lbs. more or less of trailer, behind mine. Towed the bike from Denver, CO, to Dickinson, ND, nearly 700 miles no problemo. IIRC, WRXs are rated to tow 2000 lbs, two to four times as much as most small cars. Pardon me for the ugly blue and white bike in the foreground.
You might notice in the picture the wheels on my wagon are factory 17" UK rims; they look a lot like the stock U.S. ones, but I think the spokes look a little more 'airy.'

Just stumbled on your thread here while looking for something else and saw your stellar looking WRX. Nice work! Just put the same wheels on my Outback and I’m pleased with them. They’re great looking wheels for the $$.
Lovin’ my Suby. Great in the winter months (with winters on of course) for sure.
Cheers.

lol, random thread revival. They look good on your Outback, just be warned that this color and spoke design is a pain in the a** to keep clean, or even clean for that matter! I have never been so happy in Iowa winters as I have been with this car. I always got the best parking at my apartment becuase I was the only person to drive on top of the un-plowed hills covering the good spots, and pulled right out of there in the morining!! :p
Thanks, -Mike
