First off please don't get mad at me becuase this if this is a repost or becuase I'm new here. A family freind of mine runs a machine shop. He has the technology to make car rims. I called him up and asked if he would be interested in making A set for me. I figured I could help him and you guys out by seeing what the interest was on here about getting a larger set of P-type rims made. I am going to get a set made for myself. I was wondering how many of you would possibly be interested in a set. This isnt a group buy this is just a survey for research. I am also curious in what sizes people are most interested in. Please type a comment with the size of tire you would be most interested in if you had them made. Personaly Im going with a 16x8
Thanks for taking time to read this.

Post up a picture of a completed rim, then I'll vote.

Don't take this as I'm bashing you, at all, just trying to be helpful. This topic has been beaten to death here. Same kind of polls, etc. Do a little research and you'll see MANY pages of arguing over this topic.
Generally, a lot of people Do want 16x8s, but it appears tire choices in 16s are starting to dwindle as well. And then you have offset issues and how people want theirs and you can't get everyone to agree usually.
I personally think a 16x8 would be perfect for our cars, with a nice lip. Good luck getting this to come to fruition...

I would be most interested in 17" centers i.e a multi-piece wheel.
There are other threads about this topic with photoshopped examples of what most people seem to want.
Very interested, if you can actually pull this off.
Best bet would be to have one made up.
If we see photos of an actual wheel, you can bet there will be interest.

The usual reason why this never takes off is due to it being in the $2000 range for a set of rims.
What do you think it would cost, maybe $150-200 per wheel? I'm thinking about getting some stock p-types from wheel collision for $145 each or so...not tomorrow but sometime soon. I'll be checking back to see if you can get something done at a reasonable price.

Are you talking about using a FlowJet on a blank disc, yielding a design similar to our P Type 14x7's, except with a flat face?
More importantly... does this family friend honestly have the desire to make more than just your set?

Only issue with comparing that is, WC's wheels are just refinished stock wheels (14X7, not 16X8).

I'm Going to talk to him soon about how soon he can run one of them off. I know he has a project that he was hired for right now but I'm guessing within a few weeks he will be done. I'll also ask him about prices. Thanks for your particiaption.

I know. I figure these should be more, but hopefully not that much more. What did those 17" ROH Snypers go for when James Rosario had those made a few years ago, like $250 per wheel?

If its done right with the right price (which doesn't come alot with these custom parts jobs CF parts etc) but if done right and you can get a decent price... you have a chance of making a killing, not only with the Supra guys, there are a few other cars (classic yotas) that like to run with the p-type rims. Of course start with us on a cool price then bump it up (GB style) for second run off of rims. Thats where you're time, and R&D will pay off. The way I see it, lower price slightly (so you don't make huge profits) but you get attention and interest, then once you have enough buyers for first or second run, then bump up for any takers. Take a look in GB area, some have a date set for prices to be raised, SOME. I would definetly like to see 1 completed before any personal interest, because I along with many many many others have said they would try to get out to a shop and see what its going to take to reproduce a ptype rim in 16 or 17

His best bet would be to design a 3-piece wheel which would allow for some different variations. Then he could do different centers, different hoops, offsets, etc etc. They'd be more expensive but then he could use the design to produce more wheels and hopefully keep the pricing down. This approach would also allow different offset wheels - 9 or 10 inch in back and 8 inch up front. And then he could even sell some to the L-type guys on the list or the AE86 guys as well as other old Toyotas, the 240/260/280Z cars and other older Datsuns etc. It's just a suggestion...

What jefe_not said.
Everyone will want a different fitment - 16, 17, staggered...
A flat face 17" center would be a good start.
You'd really be making a larger version of the 15" L-type wheel.
As has been said before, a 17" with the same concave as the P-type would not allow for much if any lip. And we all want lip.

I'd be happy just to see more 15'' L types. That's really what I'm after.

... I wanna see some 18s... I do love my 16x8 work wheels, think they are about perfect size for the MKII... but would like to see or go for a 17 or 18. Would also prefer to see some concave to the face of the spokes not just flat faced... would be a lot more acurate. concave i'm sure would add to the cost. If i were in your shoes I would probably get my set made and just be done with it and be greedy about it... ha... but what good would that be for the community right? good luck at least getting your set made!

I think a flat face 16x8 P-type with an enormous lip would be stunning to say the least.

Well, I personally have zero faith in this happening. Zero ziltch none. But, you show me a 16x8 p-type, I'll drive across the river that minute and pay you for a set.

that is what Im saying...
Until you have one in your hands with pictures...I would recommend letting this thread die. An actual product, and you will have buyers.
even in a simple size like 16x8 with 0 offset (common size of the sportmax's bought)

Do 16x8 0mm exact replica. No stagger, no 17, no flat face with lip. Forget all the other inquiries. If you can get them to clear the JDK BBK you are GOLDEN. That would dramatically increase your target market.
I will buy a set for sure if they are done right. Lets see a finished wheel first! :)

what is this? the third time this month this topic has come up? jeez. FIRST, get 1 set made. thats it. then, come back and ask interest in more, and possibly more options. if you can get past the first step, i would be extremely shocked. of all the times this topic has come up, i have yet to see even one prototype built. ill glady take back my words if you can come through.

OK lets all come back down to planet Earth, I just dont see this happening.
Original poster dsnt say how they will be made.
OEs are forged/cast.... thats damn near impossible without serious equipment. We're talking huge dollars if so.
More likely would be a Flow Jet... even the 5 axis machine will not achieve the concave design of the original wheels.
They'll have the the right cutouts, but will be carved from a flat blank billet disc.
Above all else, will this guy be willing or able to make a small run?
Raw materials and equipment wear and tear isnt going to be cheap.
Please let me be pleasantly surprised.

I personally like the look of the stock wheels and am trying to stay with them for as long as I've got rubber to fit them.
Ultimately, decent 14 inch rubber is going to go the way of the do do bird ...I've got one set of 15 inch rims from an L-type but I'd be more into getting that size than bigger. Something like 20% of your suspension is due to rubber so I'm not a big fan of what I call the "bicycle tire" look....with mostly rim and very little actual sidewall.
So 15 inch would be my preference if something was made up.
Just my .02 cents...

I totally agree with Malloy, 16x8 0 offset would be kick ass!

As much as most would love to see this as would I.. :eekfacepalm:But im going to have to go with Greg on this one.. :sadbanana:Sounds good in theory but in all feasability, doubtfull.. Flat faced ones like the L-type as centers for some multi peice ones maybe..

i also agree with greg, not to be pessimestic, but looking at the precedent, this may not go through.

If you can actually get them, at a decent price, I too will drive across the river for a set, provided I have the money. But I do forsee the same problems as others, but if you can get a good offset, with the right look, and can make other options available (i.e. 15x7.5, 15x8, 17x8, etc.) and can post pics, preferable with mounted on the car, I'll drive through anything to get them. Even if that means mountain passes on 26 in January.....
and I know ALL the Portland/Vancouver/etc. area people know EXACLTY what I'm talking about.
And for my 2 cents, i'm in total agreement with malloy with the..... grrr, can't remember it all, but 0 offset, flat face, whatever it was, and ignore all the other inquiries (aside from the afformentioned other wheel size options)
