ok. i'm new on here, just joined up, and i am needing some encouragement, and advice. first of all, i am restoring an 84 supra. here are the current pictures: (let me know if this doesnt work)

im almost done with the interior and am finally moving on to the 5mge. i've never rebuilt a motor before and would like to attempt this myself, since fundage and time are quite short right now. (my wife is due with our first in feb).
so anyways, is there anything in particular i may need to know about rebuilding the motor? pistons, boring out the block, crank, etc. any tips, or suggestions are welcome, and any comments too. i keep updating my facebook page with new photos as it progresses so keep checking it. thanks everyone.

http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK2/default.aspx Here's the online TSRM; it'll help you with disassembly. Get a print copy, though, unless you have a netbook you're not afraid to expose to garage grime.

i have not bought a tsrm yet. i was gonna go by the specs online and basically put it together the way you take it apart, only reversed. i did somehow manage to get the complete intake manifold off in one piece at one time without breaking anything.(intake, fuel injectors, vacuum lines, etc).

i paid $900 for the car, have about $1000 in paint and body work, got all my new door seals and sunroof seals and headlight wiskers from toyotapartscheap.com(the cheapest place to buy GENUINE NEW toyota parts) for around $400. the fabric for the interior was $100 for the vinyl, 70 for the checkered, and 50 for the solid black velour. $500 for the seats to be reupholstered, and then prolly about another $500 in window tint, trim paint, supplies, and etc. just bought a 6m motor from JDM to go in it so we'll see how that goes. ill post more pics of that when it comes in. in all i think i have about $4200 in the whole thing right now. trying to do most of the work myself, like the wood grain dash, its actually wood too! the air vents are from a '95 dodge neon,(the only thing those cars are good for) and fabbed up to go in the wood, and mate up to the factory air ducts. its been so much work trying to learn how to do everything but im getting the hang of it.

well, since i've managed to find a 6m motor from JDM cheaper than i could do the work myself, im opting for that. $850 for the 6m with all the harnesses and intake etc etc. has anyone dealt with these motors before? are they any good?

well thats just great! my "6m" motor just arrived with a big stamp on the side of the block reading; 5m. trying to find out now what JPR Motor Co is gonna do about this. if i wanted a 5m motor, i would have rebuilt the one that was in there...i'll keep ya posted.

I know exactly what you mean. I spent weeks tying to get my headlights to work; then a nightmare AC leak, then my AC Clutch wiring; then my leaky hatch; then my leaky sunroof; a smoking engine; hatch alignment; and to top it all off, my clinically depressed, often M.I.A. upholsterer with a broken arm is holding me up.
I have on many occasions questioned my sanity and wondered WHY would someone put themselves through this craziness. The good thing is that there are so many things to work on I can always find something else to occupy my time until I cooled off enough to find the strength to go at it again. Working on something while pissed always ends up costing me money :)
Rarely is anything worthwhile ever easy. Keep at it! I will be worth it.

yep. i right there. now i dont know what to do about the motor. i guess ill toss the "new" 5m in untill i can gather up the money for a good rebuild on the original. and its true what they say about those jdm motors, theres no way that thing's got 30-40k on it. maybe 130-140k, or 230-240k. the bad thing is i just blew all the money i had left on it, and im no further ahead than i was before. i guess stupid me for trusting in what someone says and just taking their word for it.

I did finish the paint. See the thread for more details: http://forums.celicasupra.com/showthread.php?t=50897
I have it completely reassembled except a few small interior parts. I'm now in the process of refinishing the wheels. I have not updated my Car Domain page becuase I want the finished product to be a surprise to my Sister and Nieces so I'm just sharing it with the forum for now. I have about another two months of work before it's on the road, but I've been saying that for long time.

does anyone know if you can still get any of the relays for these cars? i.e. lighting control relay, light retractor relay, and a foglight relay?
memories83
10-17-2009, 07:31 AM
Many of them are. I just recently purchased the retractor control relay (under the dash) for $70ish from Toyota. They seem to be very proud of their relays as most are very pricey. I spent over $200 part swapping when trying to fix my headlights only to find out that it was the fuse link just off of positive battery terminal and a bad retractor motor. The fuselink tested okay but was still bad. Apparently precise resistance is very important to the retractors. My point being that you learn from my mistakes and you should really test the circuit and relays (see TSRM) before part swapping or you'll end up frustrated and broke.
Through all my swaps I do have a spare retractor relay (right fenderwell), retractor control relay, and right retractor motor. I do not have a spare fuselink though.
Let me know if you need further assistance. I'm a hack but I may be able to help as I recently went through this. If nothing else, I can offer words of encouragement to keep you off of the 10th floor ledge.

10-17-2009, 08:55 PM
thanks. i just checked toyotapartscheap.com and found everything for about $181. we'll see if they have them in stock. they are the cheapest place for genuine toyota parts. i had tested the retract control relay and the foglight relay, and they both tested bad. so at least i know those will need replaced. but i cant find the other retract relay, or retainer relay i guess its called. the control relay was under the dash, behind the gauges, almost impossible to find.fog relay was behind driver's kick panel. so where's the other relay?
anyhow, i dropped my motor in yesterday and got everything connected today. i think i have a problem with the wiring harness though, cause this motor has more wires in the connectors than the other motor did. prolly why the thing wont start. got it to crank, but didnt run. i dont think im getting fuel. i'll try to post some more pics as i get time.
the wiring woes continue....

10-21-2009, 08:49 PM
update: 5mge from ebay ran very rough. i thought it was timing after i had to go and switch intakes, wiring harnesses and the egr system. but no matter what i did, it still ran very erratically. so i did a compression check, and sure enough, no. 4 zero compression. as i took the air intake tube off the top of the motor, i saw a nice hole in the side of the cam housing, with a valve spring seat sticking out of it, and broken rocker. i know the motor wasn't like that when i got it, so it had to happen sometime when i was starting it, messing with the timing. any ideas on what would cause this to happen? should i pull the whole block apart and redo the whole thing(expensive) or would it be ok to just replace the head, since i do have a spare?
ill post a pic of this mess as soon as i can. whats the difference between a 5m and 6m motor? is it just the 7m crank or are there other things that are different?

sorry guys, been busy the past few weeks, so here's the update: going with a simple rebuild of the 5m from japan. im getting my head, block, and crank back from the machine shop tomorrow, and then start putting it back together. hopefully this time everything will go smoothly. i promise ill have more pics up soon. i decided to polish everything i can under the hood, and everything else, repaint.

Wow, I bet that could result in a loss in compression and oil... I had mine develope a crack between the head bolts on either side and that's the reason I now have a 6m. I managed to find one on google and bought it from a company called Soko or Soku industries based in California. I know mines somewhat low mileage, had original plugs in it still. I'm having to deal with a couple hardened valve seals from it sitting so long, so I'm burning some oil on startup. I really like the color you went with, and the flat black in the engine bay is awesome. You're making great progress. Polishing all that stuff and tearing it down is a lot of hard work. I was pulling bits of wire from the wire wheel out of my shirts and skin for weeks after I got done polishing up my 6m parts. Good Luck!

i know what you mean. i didnt even polish it as far as i wanted to, my hands were tired. plus i had the A.D.D. kicking in and wanted to work on something else. but im going with a daytona yellow engine block(if it ever gets done) and the polished/black/anodized blue look in the motor. i want it to look sharp and catchy without it looking like some Puerto-Rican skin wagon. (no offense to anyone i promise you) so if anyone thinks this is gonna look bad, let me know.

well, the doors locking every 10 can be low voltage related... try getting a good charge on the battery. u check the alternator with a volt meter to see what its putting out? or are you taking the dash gauges word for it?
if there is something ive learned from messing with hondas its "when all else fails, check your grounds".. ive found that most of the time when ever you have an eletrical 'spook' its because of a bad ground...
but id say #1 issue right now would be voltage... make sure you got a good charge on the battery

yeah 90% of the timewhen it comes to electrical it has to do with ground... and the locking of the doors could possibly be because of a stuck switch on the electric switchs in the doors... and just double check and make sure everything on the alternator is connected.

Did you ever figure out what the deal was with the rocker arm and the hole in the cam tower?
rce311
12-09-2009, 04:50 PM
yeah. i ignored rule # 1 of jdm motors, treat it like a core. half the oil holes beside the lash adjusters were plugged full of crap, and weren't getting oil. lucky i only broke one.a better description of this malady will come later.
ill check my grounds too. the big problem i have with the electrical is that i have no begining reference point. the PO i guess didn't replace the fusible links and straight wired everything in complete ghetto fashion with duct tape, making it impossible to know what was hooked up to what from the start. got the printouts from the FSM and i guess gonna work from the components back to the battery instead of the other way around. can anyone send me a picture of the wire coming off of the + terminal of the battery, and the wires and links and such? maybe i could match something up to make things go a bit faster. gotta get this thing going again for the meet dec. 26.
