View Full Version : Long sig's

Norbie

Is there some way to limit the size of user's signatures, and possibly disable the use of pics in the signature? One of my pet hates is scrolling through a forum and discovering that 90% of the content on the screen is stupidly long signatures being repeated over and over.... thoughts?

No offense to anyone, but I totally agree with this. Let's keep the pics in the Pic section. Will make the surfing experience more pleasant.

little sigs are ok in my book, the rule of thumb though is they shouldn't be any bigger then your average banner add.

Is that about an inch? That sounds good. Get much bigger than that an it gets kind of cumbersome.

It is possible to disable sig pictures.

The rule of thumb is to use smaller pics and only have your sig once in a thread though -- that works well for me personally.

I understand what you're saying quick...but most people don't do it like you said. The number of threads with huge signatures is getting bigger....I'm on cable, so speed isn't the problem, its just a pain the arse trying to read while filtering through peoples huge signatures.

Go check out the Toymods forums in oz to see how much better it is not having long sig's. How do we get into out profile to change things too? I must be stupid cos i can't find it! :D

You have to click on log out then on the next window click on profile, it will then let you make whatever changes you want.

We could always have Malloy add a 'view signatures' option to the BB...

If you see people with sigs that are too big let me know and I'll talk to them.

I will have to think about the sig thing. I typically do not run one anymore, since I now fully understand how it slows the masses down.

Sigs are really cool though, and it gives everyone the option to showoff their cars.

justcallmefrank
03-17-2003, 10:00 AM
I understand what you mean Malloy, but so does the pictures page, isn't that why you made it in the first place? :P

I think small text signatures are fine because they don't really detract.

no problems, if I find an example of what I mean I'll tell ya.

Get rid of the pictures in the signatures. You already have a place on the left to post a picture no need for one in your signature too.

I'm all for getting rid of picture sigs. Picture sigs are one of my pet hates for sf.com, they piss me off no end.

All that is needed is text and perhaps a hyperlink to pictures of your car. That way, if someone wants to see it they will go to the link. If not, it won't get in their way.

I think I have to agree with everyone else here on this after accessing on a dialup thi weekend. Its not much of a concern on a high speed connection, but on dialup, the pics in sigs slow load time BIGTIME.

I say, if ya wanna show off your car, use it as your avatar, like Quick does, or post it in the Pics Section.

Just my 1/50th of a U.S.D.

Perhaps we should turn it off or make it a user option.

Funny thing is that's a smaller pic. :)

When you log in check the upper right on the main page... there is a textual link there to view all new posts.

C'mon Chris, you're not playing fair.
I'm not talking about the little pic of your MkII to the left of your message.

This thread was started by Norbie, then there was a reply by 82spearco, then suprafiend, then yourself.
At the bottom of your message was a pic of your MkII and MkIV together.
This must have been about a quarter of an 800 x 600 screen size.

And now, just minutes later, it's not there.

;)

I'll just chime in to say that I agree with the others.

I don't like to see any pics in the sigs. It just slows it down and forces you to scroll more than you would otherwise. Leave the pics for the pics section.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it takes about as many bytes too!

That's my 2 pennies...

He's such a touchy poster, huh? Want me to back you up or are you gonna let it slide? Here's what I was gonna post:

Manners, manners! I think they're right. I'm sick as crooked sh!t of looking at my pic. But I was going to re-size, too. I realize if everybody had sig any size they want it'd be wrong.

I took the pic, pb account, then img tag. Do you have a favorite size? A spec? Zank what's the size of yours? It's not like I'm plagiarizing, or using someone elses image without consent. I'm busy and lazy.

I was meeting a group of people I'd never met and I wanted to recognize them by their cars and me mine. Chris parked right beside my car. Also, Wade recognized killing my car. Shawn knew it by description over the phone. That's priceless info for me. And gigantic leverage against a future son-in-law. And why I need new drive shafts.

I was just considering what I was gonna do. But it's boring lookin' at the same thing, that's self-evident. I respect someone with the guts to say what's on their mind.

So i left a more friendly sig for ya.

Although very large photos in sigs can be annoying because of the room they take up, it's loading times and therefore file size that matter to people on slow connections. JPEG is a compressed format and most editting programs let you vary the amount of compression, so when you resize a photo you can also control the size of the resultant file. Obviously there's a trade off with quality, but you'd be surprised at how far you can go before you can see any difference on screen. As a general rule you can reduce a file to a 1/7th of the uncompressed bitmap without seeing any loss at screen resolution.

Pat, your photo is 96kb
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/supramad77/Compasspoint.jpg

reduced in size by a 1/3rd it's just 24kb, so will load in 1/4 of the time
http://www.yellowsun.plus.com/forum/Compasspoint-400comp.jpg

and then with a bit of editting, down to just 13kb
http://www.yellowsun.plus.com/forum/Compasspoint-chop.jpg

I think it would be a shame to see sigs disappear altogether, but a limit on pixel size and filesize (like with avatars) would tidy up the pages and speed things up for everyone.

zank
11-14-2005, 05:33 PM
I took the pic, pb account, then img tag.

In photobucket you can edit your image and resize it by 75-50-25%

I resized mine down a bit, because it was too big for my taste.

mspaint comes on any windows computer. mspaint is one of the easiest picture programs designed. just open it and look around. you should get it in less than 10 minutes. however, it has limited capabilities to keep the simplicity.

I just went and did a quick fix for now;

http://forums.celicasupra.com/showpost.php?p=387790&postcount=8

It only takes up 3/4s of the screen for now LOL. If anybody has someothers let me know I usually just scroll thru them at the speed of light.

That one could also stand a little cropping - get rid of the grass below the MkII and the trees above the MkIII.

Might even make for a decent looking sig.

Tanya
10-29-2007, 02:39 PM
It's not even just about being on dialup or not, it's also screen/resolution size. Sigs should be made so that they're at least comfortable to view on a 15" screen/800x600 pixel resolution without having to scroll waaay over or have the sig take up most of the page.

I try to keep my sig about the same size as my info box on the left so that it doesn't cause issues... and I also unclick the sig box on the fast reply a lot of times, because no one needs to see it like 5 times on one page.

Darrow
10-29-2007, 02:59 PM
There is the option of not seeing sigs at all. Just change the setting in the user CP. But then I can't see the links I have in my sig. When ever I need to get the the TSRM I come on here and click the link in my sig. 6 of one and half a dozen of the other I guess.

Looks fine to me.

For the most part, we just have issues w/ peeps who put in REALLY BIG ASS PICTURES IN THEIR SIG's & they don't know how to resize the bloody things before inserting them. Some of the more offending peeps who have had them lately (they know who they are) have fixed them. Or the Admins fixed the pics "for them".

Even I use 1024x768 on my crap 15" crt monitor... 800x600 is way too... zoomed in? Hell with it set at 800x600 Eng's sig takes up half the page itself.

I think the sig.s add personality, and help us remember who we are talking to. Please don't ban them.

Anyway, I don't even know how people make big pic. sig.s. I had a helluva time with the exisiting limitation of 19.5 kb of memory. I know that some people's are a helluva lot more than that. Are the new limitations grandfathering in the larger ones from senior members?
