View Full Version : What's up with my Supra???

This is kinda hard to explain so bear with me. I'm not sure if it's the gauges or not, but my temp gauge will slowly move towards hot and then when it gets there (sometimes sooner), it falls back to normal temp. It used to run into the red and stay there before I changed the thermostat (and the rad). Now it just falls back to normal before that happens. Also when I tap the brake or turn on the heater, the gauge sometimes goes up a notch. The heater also blows out cold air every time I go up a steep hill on my way home. The heat also returns whenever I get near the top of the hill. Always in the same spots... what's up with that??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

it sounds like to me the water is low, or the coolent system needs to be burped. cold air coming out like that definatly means low, had to run my truck and fill up more after it ran a while, and circulated the water through the engine and heater core.. HTH

yeah my temp guage does this too, but I have major air in the system ( BHG ) so take a look at burping the coolant system, it should make everything normal again once it's done right

Replace your thermostat and radiator cap if you havent within the last year...

i have the SAME exact problem.....a good thing to do....which i still have to but i dont have the time....is to raise the frnot end....then burp the cooling system......my question is....what EXACTLY is the best way to burp it? i know you take off the cap and let the engine run with the heater on...but any other tips to get all of the air out?
You probably have an air lock.. burp the system....make sure the heater core is not plugged

I had to drain my coolant system tonight to put in this liquid metallic sealer and when it was refilled, it had to idle for 30 minutes to work the sealant through...my heat started working again and the whole time idling, not a notch over normal temperature, also noticed a lot less bubbles ( I'm not gonna get all the bubbles out of my system due to BHG )
maybe something just as simple as a flush and refill will stop the air locking problem

i have a sweet tool, a funnel for the cooling system...makes less mess..you pop it on the top of the radiator, and then run the engine on a incline and run it at 2500 for like a few minutes...then let it idle...thats how i do it....

I know, I hated added something like that in there, it's a brand new radiator, but I needed to attempt something. I just need to limp the car around for a few more days, then no more problems

I too had to figure-out the best way to burp the cooling system... Run the system with the heater on full and the cap off the radiator, then starting at the front of the system, repeatedly squeeze the upper radiator hose until air quits burping out the top....remember to refill the radiator to the tip-top between burps! Then go back to the heater hose coming out the top/rear of the engine, squeeze it repeatedly until air quits burping out the top of the radiator...remember to refill the radiator to the tip-top between burps! Man, every last bit of air gone! Did not have to raise the front of the whole car more than the grade of my driveway.

This just happened to me, I kept losing fluid. Refill your coolant and burp it. My water pump gasket was bad and I never noticed because it only leaked when I was driving, Good luck

Back middle of the top of the engine. Follow the spark plugs, 1-6 and where a #7 would be there's a hose. That's the heater hose!

I think it is the hose at the back of the engine, between the 2 cam boxes. In this picture:

You can see it come up above the 2 cam boxes and then follow the firewall to the passenger side of the engine bay.
If I have it wrong, then someone please correct me.
