so, my 5m blew a head gasket (my first one, oh boy!) in my 86 cressida.

i've found a 5m gasket set from a friend..and another friend has an ARP bolt set (not studs, but OEM replacement style bolts).

problem is..they are for a 7m. i know the heads are "close" and "interchangeable" with work, but are the head bolts similar, if not identical?

i cant afford to fix my car with 100% OEM stuff, so im getting things cheap, here and there..

thats all i can think of for now.

help? l:eek4dance:

just use old bolt's if you still planning to do the 1jz swap.
also if you are looking at the 1jz swap i'd ring vicroads and make sure it's legal! when i enquired about a 7m swap they said as long as it's the same series motor it's Ok. but it still needs to be engineered to be legal. mainly brake upgrade to handle extra power.
cheers ,

oh its totally illegal...but the police here arent smart enough to ever figure anything like that out- nor do they care.

im still saving for a 1j swap, or NA 2j...but ill be rocking the 5M for another year or so (until it explodes from all the doridori action...)

so in the mean time.. i need to know if 7m bolts will work?

I think the bolts would be too short for your 5m application. Can you take a measurement for us? From the shoulder of the bolt (including the washers) to the tip.

well, the bolts are on the other side of the province- i'm waiting on the word from one of you guys (someone who knows the M series better than i do) so i can buy them. i don't have them yet.

toyota wants 8 bucks a stud....and at 14 studs...that costs alot..

Can someone answer the question? I need to have this figured out in a few days... I can't afford a new set of bolts from toyota.

that is, unless someone on here has a set of 5M head bolts I can buy?

what's wrong with using the bolt's you have ?
as far as i know bolts can be used more than once !
unless you looking for big HP they should do the job fine.
how long before you go1jz ? i think your just waste'n money replaceing head bolts ! UNLESS there's something wrong with them !:inout7xr:

its common practise to replace them. they are 24 years old. the chances that ill be able to torque the head down correctly, and to a higher torque spec with used 24 year old bolts, is not super likely.

Yeah it's recommended to replace them. Hot cold, hot cold, and they stretch over time.

If its a 5M-GE you can use 7M Studs, Just have be careful on the install and make sure to not put them all the way in the block.
I don't think you can use 7M bolts as they are too short and you can't split the difference like you can on the studs.

What i am getting ahold of are ARp 7M BOLTS though, not studs. So i guess 7m bolts wont work?
