View Full Version : Fluid in brake booster??

So I removed my brake booster while i am cleaning the engine bay and also to clean and paint it. When you shake it around you can hear fluid in it. I never thought there was fluid in there, is there supposed to be? Also when I went to paint it I hung it with the brake master cylinder mounting surface facing downward and what seems to be brake fluid was dripping from the vacuum line barb. Stopped leaking but you can still hear a good amount of fluid inside. I did not have brake issues other than low fluid from time to time and it does look like the brake master was leaking between the booster and master... did the disappearing fluid push its way into the booster???? Does it just need to get replaced at this point? If so, anyone have a 7M booster available? ha...

it's not supposed to have fluid in it.
i don't know if the fluid will damage the diaphragm or not, but i would replace it, especially if you alreayd have another one in stock.

Figured... I was already planning on replacing the master but wasn't planning on the booster.... guess i'll have to see how much one is...

It will damage the booster. I had this problem 3 months ago. My master was leaking for a while, changed it. Then the booster failed and it was sucking up fliud through the vacuum line. Lots of smoke all over the place. I'm running a MK2 Master with a MK3 Booster. Works very well. Good luck!

yeah. bad master cylinder. it leaks into the booster and will cause it to go out. so replace both and be good.

If you want to try and keep using the booster you can pull off the nipple where the vacuum hose goes onto, then it'll drain better. If you try to unscrew it, it'll just keep spinning, so you have to use a little force when pulling it off.
Mine also had a lot of fluid in the booster when I took it off my car, but there was no leaks around the area where my master cylinder and booster mount up. I just decided to buy a remanufactured one from Rockauto.com (A1 Cardone brand I think) but it was pretty costly.

Yeah I checked at my autozone (autoparts store) and for a reman booster was $265 so I went ahead and got a MK3 Booster used for $50... Much better price and seems like a good upgrade. Not too sure what to do with the old booster... would hate to just throw it away...

It feels pretty good. More assist. Cant really compare it to stock since my car sucked balls in braking with the MK2 stuff cause of the crap master. lol
