if so what kind of power lose did you get, I have W58 with 4.10 currently and it is dead, can get 3.73 or 4.30 diff from salvage yard, currently I have 380,000 miles and wonder how the 3.73 would effect driveablility and power, car is pretty weak but still get me there...lol it is my driver so not looking to increase power just not give up big time in town where most of my driving is. thanks.

4.30 is awful in any situation (except for hillclimbing), N/A or FI. I love my 3.73, although I haven't tried it N/A. Get the 3.73 and deal with the longer gears; you'll eventually make more power or sell me your gears

I have 4.30s in my 5mgte...
makes for a blast in city driving, stop light to stop light.
short free way jaunts cause your cruising in powerband.
But a trip of any distance would suck cause cruising at freeway speeds your at 3k+ rpms all the time...

One of my cars does take off a bit slower han the other, but yes freeway/trips it rules. Its not hard to drive around town or anything, just a different feeling. I will be changing my 4.30 car to 3.73 when I get the chance. I like the longer gears and travel a lot.

Yes, the awesomeness of being at about 3400 RPMS all the time while on the freeway.
My altima does 80mph at like 2500 RPMS, the Supra is damn near 4K haha.
3.73 sounds more and more enticing. Especially since I'm so close to having my truck to drive to and from work the Supra will slowly lose it's DD status.

How much did the 3.73 run you guys to change? I'm really regretting not getting a set of 373s when a diff overhaul was done in the summer. 115-120=3400-3600prm.... gas whore.

I went from 4.10 to 3.73 in a NA automatic and I have no complaints. I can attest that with 3.73 your RPMs will be lower at cruising speeds on the freeway.

Thanks, cause some of us were thinking that whole "math" thing was BS :p ;)
Seriously though, 3.73s will take the edge off your acceleration. You said you have a 4.1 right now? So are you auto or is it an 83 5spd? I wouldn't want a 3.73 with an early low compression, stock 5m, that would make for a pretty slow car. Also keep in mind that if you go to the 3.73 diff you need to change both speedo gears in your tranny to correct your speedometer, the one on the output shaft is alot harder to change. Wouldn't want to throw the thing off now if you have an impressive 380k on it
My DD had a 4.3, now its a 3.73 and I like it in that car as its my DD and I seem to get alot less speeding tickets with that "edge" missing. The car is a little more docile and doesn't feel like its begging to be raced hard all the time. That could be a bad thing for some cars, I certainly wouldn't want that in the project car.

In my 1st Supra, the 4.30 diff blew up and I was forced to run 3.73s. I HATED IT. I will never do 3.73s again unless I'm boosted. I have 4.10s right now, love it. Have played with the idea of getting 3.90s, but too difficult to find 3.90 LSD atm.

So from what im getting, 4.30 have a higher top speed? more highway pull, and 3.73's are better from a standstill? iv got an 83 p type auto, so i have a 4.30 correct?

3.73 gears are longer gears so no you will not pull as hard from a stand still. and you will have lower rpms on highway and higher speeds. the 4.30 is the other way around. my car will have full exhaust timing is advanced, cold air intake and alot of other stuff so the 3.73 in my car is not bad cause its five speed and it has the higher comp 84 motor in my 82.

I gotta agree. I swapped from 4.30s to 3.73s and it kinda sucks. The only reason I don't really care is because I get north of 25 mpg regularly and mk2s with stock 5mges are not fast(regardless of what rear gear). Hopefully I'll turbo the car in the next year so it won't matter.

so the 4.30 pulls hard from a stop but eats gas?

btw I get 25mpg in my car which has a built engine and 4.10 rear end.
I got anywhere from 18-22mpg in my 4.30 cars, which were mostly stock 5MGEs, LOL!

My 4.10's are making bearing noises and I have a line on a 4.30 LSD for $100.W/auto,the acceleration will be better, but the MPGs will go down.Higher RPM'S at freeway speeds I can deal with. I have those tall "L" type tires on my '84. Should be fine. Who wants a 4.10 open diff? FREE. When I get the 4.30 ,it will be available. Needs side bearings,I believe. Dave in Seattle.

An 83 auto will have a 4.1 diff.
A 4.3 won't neccesarily get worse milage in the city, its all about final ratio. If you put tall gears in the rear end, shift later, if you have shorter, shift sooner, then the same mpg in the city. But a 4.3 diff will give worse milage on the highway and with a 5spd car it makes the car feel zipper so you tend to drive it harder and use more gas, but thats just because of your heavy right foot. IMO the 84+ 5spd cars with 4.3s don't feel slow at all when they're in good shape, but I wouldn't put a 3.73 on an 83 auto, that will be lethargic.
BTW Tanya, a 5spd car with a 4.1 diff and 225/50-15 tires has almost the exact same gearing as a 4.3 5spd car with the stock tires. The speedo is actually 99 percent correct if you still have the 4.3 side gears in the tranny even.

lol, yeah I could feel that when I put these wheels on that had the Potenzas. I was like holy crap, just like having 4.30s again! But these new tires, these Miradas, it doesn't feel like that anymore. They seem a little taller (maybe bc they actually have tread? lol) and a little less wider than the Potenzas.

there's a fair bit of variation in physical dimensions between different tire brands of tires that are made in the same size. You'd have to check the manufacturers specs.
