Have an obscure problem.... Every time it rains, or gets wet... My pop-up headlights, which normally work COMPLETELY normally, decide to motorize up, and the headlights and fog lights stay on no matter what i do....

I unplug the headlight relay in the engine fuse box and it turns the headlights and fog lights off, but the headlights stay motorized up. Sometimes the taillights get stuck on, i unplug the taillight relay next to headlight relay and it turns them off.

Everything dries out and things go back to normal again. I suspect it has something to do with the stock alarm system, which sometimes arms, and usually doesn't arm.

When i'm having the problem with the headlights coming on by themselves when it's wet, i can pull up on the driver's side door latch from outside of car and the headlights go off????

Anyone know how to bypass the stock alarm system on '85 Supra 5MGE? I already tried all the different relays for the headlights and retractors, all my fuses under dash and in engine bay are good. I didn't check the blue relay under dash yet not sure where it is.

Any ideas would be very helpful.
My car is a manual trans.

Thanks.

First and perhaps, most important, buy a good car cover. Sounds like some pre-existing condition, (corrosion?) gets aggravated by water. At least you can keep it covered when not driving.
I personally, really like the stock alarm system. Why not try an solve the problem? It does seem like you're on the right track. You might try taking the driver's handle out and check for water intrusion.Clean all connectors, taking care when pulling apart. I think I have a nice 85 driver's handle in storage if you need one. Look inside the door itself for water stains, rust near the handle.
I wonder if clear silicone would be good when re-installing the handle to prevent water entering.

Sweet!!!! There you go Brian. I am pretty sure that's the fix. Unplug the alarm brain and your problems should go away. BIG thanks to Dean!!

I've heard of weird electrical problems caused by water intrusion/corrosion on the body bulk electrical connector in the driver side kick panel (where the other fuse box, etc. is). Water gets in by way of the A pillar being rusty (under the windshield) or through the rainwater trough under the cowl (where the windshield wiper linkage is). The driver's door harness plugs into it, so that could be the connection to the alarm system. Hope you get it figured out!
