Valve - rebuild cylinder head $350 to $500 or used cylinder head $150 to $200, plus $200 gaskets and misc and 8 hours labor at local rates. Piston - rebuild motor $1800 to $3000 depending how bad it is plus 20 hours labor and another probably $500 in gaskets and miscellaneous. Or, most people opt for a used motor at anywhere from $500 to $1000 plus same labor and misc. If you are really cheap, you can figure out just what is knocking and fix just that and hope the rest of it holds together. Most of tho tend to go the "while we're at it" route. As long as we have the motor all apart, we might as well go ahead and rebuild the whole darned thing.

Sounds like it needs to be disassembled anyways, I'd pull the head and freshen. Could be a bad HLA too.

Get to know your way around the local wrecking yards.
I bought my '84 from a young man that tried to make it the last ten miles home after the engine started knocking on the freeway at 70 mph+.
He didn't make it.
That was five years ago and that was an easy fix.
I replaced the whole engine with one pulled from an '87 Cressida.
Total cost for the repairs was $360.00.
It is still my best driver.
