Could the pit bosses maybe modify the "profile" form page "location" line to say:
"Location: (please input at least a general area)"? It seems many people choose to leave it empty, and then proceed to post the kinds of things that make the reader need to know where they are for one reason or another. I think it would be one of those little things that would help get rid of a nuisance problem.

maybe make it a "required" field, like the password and email and whatnot...

Reviving this thread....as it seems we have way tooo many FNG'S not filling in the LOCATION,and then asking for .....parts,cars,help,etc. and then NOT even putting there location in the thread

I for one, have decided to flat out ignore ....ie. NOT ANSWER....anyone without a location.

Anybody else?

It would seem that even if a new-bee isn't asking for something but just checking in and saying Hi, then the first things they get asked are a. where are you? and b. what car have you got?
People naturally like to know where other members are and I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't want to put at the very least what country you're in.
So, Mr. Sidman, sir, is making LOCATION a 'required field' a feasible option? What do you think?

I'll look into it and see how it works. Shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. What concerns me is the impact on existing members...I don't want an "if...then" statement to F things up, but it shouldn't be too hard to make that field required.

I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

just throwing an idea out, as i have no idea how customizable this BB software is, but...could you write a script to check member profile info on login and if the location field is blank, bring them to the profile update screen? i do agree that having a 'known' location for every member would help tremendously in organizing of events and selling/buying items.

wow thanks a lot you guys, this thread originated in March by Brad, I posted at the same time in March that it should be a required field, but I guess no body pays attention to what I say anyway

Please don't start that crap...I've been looking into how this can be "easily" added to the forum without causing problems for about 45 minutes now, looking at strings and strings of code.

So far I'm finding mixed issues with doing this mod, on the phpBB2 mods site. If you start whining, I'm going to go back to what I was doing...and forget the idea entirely.

Shawn...

I'm reading through several posts regarding making this change, and it's pretty complicated - but I think I have a handle on it. I just don't want to jack up the database. It's backed up and all that, but I don't like the idea of it going boom.

Tanya...

What in the hell? I tell you not to whine (and you know exactly what I'm getting at, so don't act butt hurt) and you call me "FYRARMS" from SF.com? I am no where even in the vacinity of how that guy acts.

I'd act insulted but...I can't stop laughing.

I really think you should crack open a beer and suck down a bottle of MIDOL -- because whatever the hell is bothering you sure as shit isn't my fault.

Trying to get back on topic.........

I don't think there's too much need to apply this retrospectively. I mean most people know where Tanya is by now and as long as he isn't too close nobody cares where Zank actually is
I think just catching new members coming in would be enough.

And on a different note, how come threads in the Suggestion box so frequently get people wound up

Good question. I laughed about the initial reaction...and then I wondered why it had to be an issue about me not jumping on this sooner. Surely Tanya can see that it's not worth complaining about. If I touched a nerve, I'm sorry.

I'm trying to work this out so it doesn't create more problems than it's worth....so far it seems like a stable mod, but I'm reluctant to implement it because of how it makes changes to the database. It modifies a variable that I don't think will be happy with the change. It's not difficult to administer, I just don't like how it's done.

We'll see.

Ok, I don't know anything about this software, so if making it a required field is problematic then how about just adding some text on the registration page asking people to put something in the location box? Better than nothing

Look, I don't even know why I bother replying but here it is

Malloy, this is a suggestion box, you guys are supposed to read it. It's not flooded with 20+ new posts every day either, so I don't know why it's so hard to read the threads in the suggestion box.

I used to think I contributed somewhat decent information here. I try not to bash the new members if they don't know exactly where to go. I try to answer posts even if the question has been asked a million times. I busted my ass on the FAQ thread trying to get it organised, and I was just about to do another FAQ on the common oil leak areas on the 5MGE. But I refuse to do so now because I am obviously not respected at all here. My car is a "disgrace" as a couple of members have put it, and no one wants to listen to a girl on car advice anyway. I guess Don L will be the last to recieve any parts from me, might as well throw the rest in the trash.

And gee, laughing at me sure isn't going to make me feel better, I hope you all made yourselves feel better, especially Zank, who just posts stupid ass smileys.

But anyway, here's a cliff notes version for all you who "skim" through my posts: I'm tired of the insensitive bullshit. I appreciate the few good people that have been nice to me always. IM me if you want to chat, b/c I will not be on this forum anymore..cya
