View Full Version : Pulley Nut, Power Steering. What is it?

So today I decided to replace the Power Steering pump, it's been making some odd noises, possibly worn internal bearing, and I got a good deal on a re-man.

Lost a lot of time 'cause that damn pulley nut was on very tight. No way to get it out, and you can't remove the pump w/o removing the pulley. Finally drilled a hole through the nut, and it finally gave up - but still with a fight.

I cleaned out the reservoir and mounted it on the new pump, then I went to the hardware store to find a replacement nut. I took the original nut with me and found that:
It won't thread into an M12 bolt.
A 7/16 mating bolt is too small.
A 1/2 mating bolt too big.
And it won't go into an M10.

What the heck is the size (and pitch) of the power steering pulley nut?
BTW: The original nut threads fine on the original shaft.
.....are re-maned units using different shafts, w different threads (the key and pulley itself fit fine on it)?

Well I found my calipers and pitch gauge, and took some dimensions off the new unit's shaft threads.

It is definitely an M12x1.25.

A little research, M12s come in the following pitches
Course (1.75)
Fine (1.50)
Extra Fine (1.25)

The key here is that "Extra Fine", not a common part at Lowes/Home Depot, and I just noticed that the replacement that I bought was an M12x1.50.
I am going to try my local ACE Hardware, they usually have more options.

I never checked the thread pitch, but can send you an OEM nut from a 6m PS pulley pump. $5.0 shipped.

Gotta say: The CelicaSupra community is great. Got two offers (Scott & Aaron) for replacement pulley nuts. Thanks, guys.

...but yesterday at lunch, my local Ace Hardware had the M12x1.25 nuts so I got one, and when I got home it fit perfectly. New PS pump is on, and tonight the plan is we flush, refill, and bleed ATF fluid in the system.

So, thanks again cs.com community and hope this thread may answer somebody's similar question in the future.

1.25 is on these cars a lot and its a VERY hard pitch to find bolts and such for sometimes.
