So I found a 86' MKII the other day. The guy I spoke with said it's in good shape but has 296K on it. He stated that it runs great and it even passed its emission test. It's about 300 mi from where I live so I don't know if I trust it to make the trip back home. He said he didn't think it would have any problems and said he would drive it that far. Any suggestions on what kind of questions I should ask? The paint looks faded but he said the body is in good shape with little or no rust. It's a 5 speed. He's asking $2400. Is that a fair price with that many miles on it?

That's a bit pricey for the miles. 5 speed? Auto? I would ask when the timing belt was last replaced, and I would check it top to bottom in the "rust prone" spots. Under the wheel wells, rear quarter panels, spare tire well, and the radiator support area. Basically, scope it over anywhere water might like to get, and stay. Also check under the battery. I don't know if you guys have rust problems in Wyoming as bad as we do here in Georgia, but I've yet to see a mkII here with intact quarter panels, or battery tray. I have to cut, and weld all of mine.

I had an 83 with 99999999999999999 miles. that isn't a big concern if the needed things have been replaced or at least looked at. But that is a bit pricey for a car pushing 300k.

If you can check the compression when you go.

Make sure it is cold when you get there so you can see how is starts/runs cold.

Check things like the cooling system, timing belt, other belts, suspension bushing etc. Things that just wear out with miles.

So they sent me a few pics. The body looks ok no major rust that I could see in the photos. Waiting on interior and engine pics. They did mention the drivers seat has a tear in it. The bank won't loan anything on it until they see pictures of the car to verify its condition. With that kind of mileage what would be a fair price to offer them? They are asking $2400.

$$$ too much - unless they can back it up with some recent work and receipts / IMO don't take a loan on a car this age / Have then meet you half way (150 miles) to see if they trust it that far.

maybe a 1k cause with the motor with that many miles is probably pretty weak unless he had the oil changed every 3k and garaged

Not worth $2400. I don't even have to look at it to tell you that. Not with 296,000. If he's got a major rebuild or swap and expensive mods, maybe. And new paint.
I probably wouldn't waste the gas money. If you have $2500 or more to spend, you can find a pretty nice MKII. I could check around here if you want. PM me. Also, check the forums here in "cars for sale"

There's an 84 with a 6M and blitz exhaust on craigslist, Bay Area. Asking $1300 .Point is----lots of great deals here, and the money saved pays for shipping.

Looked at it over the weekend and it needs a lot of work. There is a lot of rust on it. The motor looked and sounded good. I didn't drive it because I was pressed on time and decided that there are better ones out there that will require less work.
