View Full Version : Is my TPS making my car run rough?

I recently have been having problems with miss firing cylinders, the most common being number 6.

Symptoms,

underload: sputtering, backfire, hesitation.
idle: occasional miss, usually number 6 but numbers 2 and 5 act up also.

ecu throws 41, TPS. This tps was used on an 83 and did not throw a code, now its installed on the 84.

I have tried adjusting the TPS and it usually helps, for about the first mile. Then the car goes back to sputtering.

I have installed New autolite platnums, new msd wires, cleaned distributer, and I have even swapped in differant injectors a few times.

This motor only needs to last about a week or two until the 7m is ready, but it does need to last.

maybe I'm missing something, I have also tried switching ecu's but to no prevail.

any thoughts?:whatever:

tps couldn't cause specific cylinders to mis, since distributor is by itself, and injection is batch in pairs 2 x 3 1,3,5 and 2,4,6 tps will effect every cylinder.

After a quick conversation with my trusty pal- D-cat.

I have come to realize the issue lies with the half removed EGR. I'm not sure which sensor is acting up but I failed to mention in the previous post,

NO EGR, vacuum lines are looped, but I'm not sure how to trick the exhaust Manifold o2 sensor. I'm pretty sure that its still giving signal to the ecu.

no need to trick the o2 sensor.

Your ecu will still need an o2 sensor even with no egr. Im not running any egr and still need a o2 sensor.

Look elsewhere

my old cars 6M is running with no EGR and it runs fine. have you tried a different distributor yet?

Maybe some of the hydraulic lifters are sticking. That would cause some individual cylinders to miss, and is not affected by anything you have replaced/done so far. Others on this forum mention using Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase oil to help free them up. Sowsley made a thread about it last year. Hope that helps!

its not Mechanical, because its not constant.

It runs rough then runs perfect. the best way to describe it: as if the fuel filter was clogged, or at random some the injectors misfire.

(I used the marvel oil just in case with no luck)
