Ok, so this is what I have figured out so far. My blower doesnt work, the blower relay (passenger side) is not the problem, the circuit breaker on the driver side is not the problem, all the fuses are good, the heater control is a SOB to get out (or i could be doing it wrong). :32:
Searches revealed: There is a relay on the passanger side that could be the problem, changed it didnt work.
There is a resistor that controls the fan speed, if it is broken your fan will only work on high. Mine doesnt work at all.
Now what you may want to know is: When I turn the fan to auto I can hear a mechanical click, click, click behind the control. If i wiggle that switch i hear the same thing. Also when I move or wiggle the temp switch. I have the control hanging in the car right now and cant see any thing back there that would click like that. It sounds like a relay/ cuircut breaker is turning on and of very rapidly.
Is there a switch or relay or something back there. Is there anything i have missed to check?

Looking at the TEWD for the 82 (sorry forgot to mention year in afor post). There is a double vacuume vavle behind the dash. Im going to check this out this weekend if i can find it. That is the only thing i can see that is in the general direction of the sound. I guess i will let you know what happens.
Maybe someone can point me in the right direction as to where to look for this thing or even what it looks like. hopefully its labled, Im guessing 3 wires (tewd) and 2 vacuum hoses?

Check the blower motor itself, it does go bad (brushes wear out usually).

Thank you! I will try that. It did work before I did the head gasket then it sat for a little over a month. Same problem tho, just it acted like a loose conection. Wiggle the switches or hit bump in the road and the fan would kick on then hit another bump and it would stop. Good to double check though couldnt hurt.
Thanks for the advice.
Its pretty easy to drop the blower out. I had to replace that and the DVV switch. That DVV switch is a real pita to get to and getting the part is also a bit tricky. I got the last one of three left in the US. Not really expensive so you might want to call the dealer about it.
Do you hear any clicking under the dash when you turn it on?

Yeah i do hear clicking. tons of clicking, tons and tons of clicking. So that seems to be the problem and im trying to find it. Please dont tell me the 82's where bastard childs in this sense also and my 84 parts car doesnt have the same one?
you should do a search on heater clicking. Lots of us have had this problem. The heater dvv valve is the clicker. The contacts get dirty in the dash also and need to be cleaned. Which is easy...its getting to it which is a real pain. An electronic cleaner will do the job of cleaning it out but you have to get to those relay points in the lever connections. Read more in the first link.
You are going to need to pull the dash. You might as well plan on replacing or fixing that double vacuum valve. Its just to the right of the gas pedal.
I would pull the blower too and replace it.
Its not unusual for all heater devices to go bad at about the same time. They are all pretty old.
Blowers are pretty easy to come by and easy to put in. If its not bad it most likely soon will be.

When I start the car and turn the heater on high, it works fine. After some time the motor seems like the motor is running on the low switch setting. The alternator is fairly new, the belt is not slipping, no indicator light on, and the gauge pretty much stays at 14v. Yesterday it was doing this, and I stopped at a friends, and the car had sat for about 15 minutes, started up the car, and the blower was blowing on high again which made me think it's not an issue with the brushes.
Anyone experienced this before? I'll need to get it resolved before it craps out completely, because it's cold outdoors now, and not expected to warm up for a while.

Yeah, it's called the brushes are getting uber worn out. Trust me, Llana's went out so I swapped mine into her car. Of the FOUR SPARES I had, not a single one had good brushes. I just modified mine to accept some brushes out of a Harbor Freight drill, now my fan blows, but it's like it's always on low.
Trust me, if you pull the motor, and then pull the cap off the end of the motor, 95% chance that the brushes are almost completely worn out.

Rusty, I was beginning to think it was the brushes, but at startup the blower blows with force on high, and then it dies down to barely running, and as i travel down the road, a bit later it will start blowing with force again. The contacts in the switch don't seem sloppy at all, so I wouldn't think it would be that, also as mentioned the motor does die down like the switch is set on low, but it will blow strong again after a bit which was making me think it's not the brushes. I was thinking it has an issue with the automatic air system like a relay or rheostat.

If it is the motor brushes, I've had good luck at a local alternator/starter business. $25 and it is as good as new. I've looked at the blower motor brushes in the junkyard and I don't want to bother repairing them myself, I'll pay the experts.

Is the blower motor a simple, remove the three screws and it slides out the bottom, or what?

Ok-Ill try to help. 82 dvv/blower/resistor is same as later, Ive had problems with all years and components are the same. The DVV needs a good source of vacumn, and a consistent electrical signal from contacts of heater control levers. So, check for behind dash vacumn leaks, and use some electrical contact cleaner on control levers. Since forum search doesnt like short terms, Id google" DVV celicasupra" to find the writeups on heater controls-some good ones here. LISTEN TO RUSTY(and Rich)-these blower motors are built with soft material-brushes wear out QUICK. Also, the passenger kick panel is susceptible to water damage, can mess with wiring and circuit breaker in the kick panel. Animals/debris are found quite often in blower motor-any suspected blockage should be inspected. About removing fan- loosen 3 bolts, remove electrical connector, but fan doesnt drop right out. You have to twist it slightly to get it past housing, then, you may have to bend or remove the firewall stud thats in the way. HTH

Sweet! Where the heck did you manage to find a working DVV?!
I also found my A/C evaporator getting frosted up esp. on real hot or humid days...when melted it left a puddle on the passenger side. I sure don't wanna replace the evaporator, plus I don't know if it would even help matters much if I did. I'm thinkin' this summer I'll just use a catch container under the vent.
