ok I just put a 82 motor in my 86. According to the guy I bought it from he said the timing was different between the two, and he also said there are manuals available here on the forums which I have never found yet. Anyways, can someone tell me where the timing needs to be set at, I think it either 10 degrees or negative 10, not sure. Any help/pics/links to a thread would be helpful as I have never done this before

thank you, according to the manual it just says to set the motor crank to tdc and says nothing about any -/+ degrees even though it shows them in the illustrations, so was I misinformed about the differences between timing for the 85-86 compared to the 82-84's? So confused

you put the crank at tdc, then you have to align the cams, install the distribuitor, then the next step is adjust the timing using a timing light.

What ECU are you using? if your using the 86 setup(which I hope you are), your 82 motor is now a 86 motor and follow that TSRM link provided.

yes I am using the 86 ecu, I guess i was just misguided a little when i was told the timing was different between the models. Basically I was told the motor i have now was timed to work in an 84 ad that i needed to change the timing to an 86 (he said because dizzy is diff they changed the timing).
thanks for clarifying and sending me in the right direction

Just follow the 86 TSRM and you'll be fine. Set it up like an 86. The only difference is the cam gears are a bit different. The teeth are shaped a bit different, but its not an issue.

OMG I seriously have to remove the crankshaft pulley to remove the timing cover!!! Is there an easy way to do this? BTW I do have to change the belt as it has broke.

Did you swap the dizzy from your '86?
The '82 has a vacumn style dizzy, (the only year it's used).
Not the best choice (the '82) but we do what we must do.
I'm putting an '82 motor in my '83 and there are changes to make still.

yup, so I just found out the timing belt is diff on the 82-83 than the 84-86, I just assumed everything was the same.... another setback, i wonder if the guy I bought it off of changed some of the gears because my old timing belt didnt break, it sheared the grooves off the belt, OMG I hope not, I bought this engine it was supposed to be running great, now low oil pressure, timing belt broke ughh, I bought this car not running and have never gotten to even enjoy it yet, plus there was oil in the antifreeze..... he said he just put a new headgasket on, I hope I didnt get screwed

the motor was bare, I changed everything from my 86 over to the 82 aside of the head, pulleys and flywheel

now that I think about some of the things that i was either misinformed about by the seller or I mistook, this comes to my head, supposedly not hooking up my knock sensor will have no negligible side effects or loss of power, this is what he told me, is that true? If not then how do I connect the knock sensor to an 82 block?
