So I finally popped a head gasket on my 79 cressida. Since I am taking the head off the car anyway, would this be a good time to replace the valve stem seals?

yeah it would make it easier since the cams will already be off the belt and what not it wouldnt hurt. rather than taking it all apart later

I am actually doing the HG next week. I had noticed that she would puff a bit of smoke when I start it. Could this be the valve stem seals? Where do you get them?

It depends on what color smoke. Also, I wouldn't judge any smoke at start up during winter since all cars pretty much smoke during that time.
So where are you guys getting your head gaskets from?

Ditto on Beck/Arnley. Quality. And great prices on Rock Auto. But google "Rockauto discount" to get a code for 5-10% off. Um, this is my code, good until May 9 2897583834651

I had difficulty getting a HG for the 4ME, I ended up getting one from Mark at Vancouver Toyota. Very satisfied with price and shipping.

Mine never use to smoke but it is oil as you can smell it, after a few seconds or less than a minute it will clear up. My BHG is not leaking coolant into the oil or cylinders, I am getting oil into my coolant.

Rich, thanks for the info. I'm ordering my stuff right after this...
Josh, I think you and I are on the same boat with a blown HG. If you wait, I have a sneaky feeling that you will start to push coolant out of your water pump or radiator cap. If not that, you may get an intermittent sputter.
I am honestly tempted to dump the carbs for a ms1 and turbo a 4m (total junkyard project). Yes I know it may not be the fastest, but it would give me a chance to get familiar with turbo's again with a motor I could care less about.

I am not going to give it the chance. Will be changed next week. I haven't drivin it since last October as it has been below freezing for the past few months.
Your project sounds fun! Good Luck!
