Unless if you can find one for "really cheap", I bet the engine itself costs more than $30,000.

The rationnal answer to this is that with a $30 000 budget you could build an entire car with far more HP, relability and overall performance.
I'd take a LS series engine from Chevrolet or a Lexus 1/2/3UZ-FE engine and turbocharge or supercharge it. Would make the whole process a lot easier as there is more informations, aftermarket parts and documented swap using those engine.

exactly. i mean it's your money, spend it how you want, but it wouldn't be practical at all to do something like that. it would be a total loss and waste of money in the long run. i guess if you ever wanted to you could just rip the engine back out and resell it to recover some, but in the car it wouldn't be worth anything. if you want a ferrari then buy one. the mkII chassis can't even handle 600hp reliably without a lot of work.

What type of project would you like to see done?

DO IT!
Screw all the haters and those that seem to like to run their mouth.
If the man wants to spend 30k on his 2k car, let him. It is a touchy subject due to the current nature of the MKII, being old enough that people use them for DD's, beaters, and first cars. I look at it that I love my car, I have no issue spending "X" amount on it to make it how I want it, anyone that feels differently can piss off.
Ok, with all of that said. You will need to figure out how to bolt a longitudinal transmission up to that thing, and get a transmission that will take the abuse. Probably looking at 5k alone for that. Like was said the chassis will need some work. A TRD LSD and some custom half shafts and a drive shaft will set you back another 2kish but should get the job done. If the car will not see slicks and hard track launches, then the stock style suspension will be fine.
I would say 10k worth of mods to the car overall, plus the engine cost itself and you will be running. Good Luck!
