The last 2 engine oil and filter changes have me puzzled. 2 oil changes ago when I removed the Fram ph3614 filter there had never been any oil that had gone through it judging by the weight of the filter. When I unscrewed the filter no oil ran out of it and it looked like it was still new. After replacing the filter with another new Fram ph 3614 and after 6000 more miles I changed my oil and filter yesterday. This time the Fram filter was a lot heaver and it must have been filtering the oil for a while. Still no oil ran out of the filter when I removed it. Yesterday I replaced the oil filter with a Wix 51068 at the suggestion of an Oreilly auto parts clerk.
Do you think there is something stopped up regarding my oil filter? My oil pressure seems to be good enough judgeing from the reading of my oil pressure gauge. The oil pressure is not as high as when the car was new but the hand on the gauge goes over half way up when driving on the highway.

fram filters suck. the oil drain back valve doesn't work so the oil drains back into the block. i use a purolator. the reg white one. and use one for a 5.0 mustang. its larger and screws right on. its a 30001 i believe. theres no way for oil to get to the main galley without going through the filter first btw. if you really want more filterint use the premium plus filter, though the reg white one has way more sq/in of filter area then the stock mk2 oil filter already.

the way the filter is mounted it should drain out

thats what the anti drainback valve is for. to prevent this from happening, the frams have cardboard endcaps and they leak back into the engine past them.

Get the oil relocation kit. Not only do you not have to worry about the oil draining back out but you dont have to deal with the b.s. when trying to take the filter off in the first place.

I think I was pretty curious as to why toyota made the oil filter upside down to begin with the first time I did an oil change.

Yeah, Toyota filters FTW.

Reasons: it's heavier duty, more threads, thicker walls. It's like the titanic of oil filters for our cars.:sarcasm: Also, as was said in that linked thread, it's designed for the toyota engine, not a resized one design fits all like fram.

That is odd that you all complain about the FRAM. I have used nothing but the only problem I have is the back flow that William was talking about.

the back flow is the biggest problem. means starting the engine with the oil system "dry". not a good idea.

Yeah I can see this (as I just pulled my cams out).

After seeing and hearing all the interesting ways the the fram filters like to fail, I will not use them since I like my engine.

Correct. Carquest also sells rebranded Wix filters.
