This is what happens when you put an RA60 Celica W57 transmission behind a 400hp 2JZ-GTE:

Couldn't you just get a 1jz R154? That would surely be burly enough for your 400 hp. Cheaper than a V160/V161....

I believe the AUS spec cars had W57's. Remember, a W57 DOES exist!!! Same as a W58, the 5th gear ratio is slightly different.

Aus spec Supras had W58s (I have one :-) )
I guess only the Celicas got W57s

Ah, okay.....
In that case, I know for sure that some of the Euro spec MKII's got the W57. I know the UK ones got them.

Yes, it's a W57 which came out of an RA60 Celica. Basically a weaker version of the W58 with different ratios.
I have considered the R154 option, but I estimate it will cost $4k to get it installed (including new flywheel, clutch and tailshaft) while the V160 will cost approx $5k. I think the extra $1k is worth it; the R154 is basically a truck gearbox while the V160 is considered one of the best production gearboxes ever made. It's also much stronger, and I know several people who have broken R154's with much less power than I have.
I was up until 10:30 last night installing another W57 in time for the Toyota Nationals. I leave tonight and it's an 8 hour trip. Here's hoping the new box is OK! And here's hoping I don't break it at the 1/8 mile drag... it's a long tow home.

I still want to hear the story behind the carnage...

I was told the W57, W58 and R154 would not bolt up to a 2J. Also was told the NA MKIVs with the W58s had different bellhousings and cases as the W58 in the MKII.
This makes my engine choice a little easier seeing my car has a good W58 and I have another spare one sitting in the garage next to the car.
One question though, has anyone tried wiring in the MKIV air conditioning compressor to the MKII system? I wonder if the plugs are the same? Or can the MKII compressor be mounted to the 2J and will the clutch pulley be okay? My air works great (had it converted to CFC free too) and I must have air.

You need a NA JZA80 bellhousing if you want to use a W57/58 behind a 2JZ. Similarly, if you want to use a R154 you'll need a JZA70 bellhousing.
Wiring up the aircon is not a problem, it's only a single wire to trigger the clutch! You'll need custom hoses though.

are there any matching rearends to the V160? It has some el weirdo final gear and when you use the final drive of the Supra you will go through the revs like a motorcycle.

oops on the transmission.
another good point about the r154 is that(on the cressida at least) you have to do a lil pounding to get the r154 to fit but the v160 is smaller and fits in just right. plus the porche synchros are a cool bragging right lol.

My W58 was holding up just fine until I started flat-changing it. An R154 will probably break with that sort of treatment as well!

flat-changing?

flat changing = dropping clutch at 5K+rpm?
LOL
just a guess...

did a quick search on google, and came up with this: 'flat-changing' is switching gears without letting off the accelerator

Perhaps "power shifting" is a term you're more familiar with? In any case it's hell on gearboxes. I won't be doing it any more.

04-13-2004, 09:19 PM
ok, so flat-changing = powershifting. ok. i know of people that shift r154's like that that have more power then norbie is making and in a heavier car. guy is crazy i dont deny that, but still. ive busted w58's doing far less. speed shifting to 3rd is what busted mine all up. lol

yeah, thats how a screwed the 5 speed in my truck - the new one (meant to go behind the diesel) seems to be holding up well
i'd say a W58 should be good up to ~450 hp if you treat it right (no power shifting!)

erics busted doing a pull in 5th gear and was ~half that hp.
