Hey, not sure if it's just me but, while driving I get the pointer to the middle line on the oil presssure gage, at idle that will drop to the 1/4 position. Makes me worry. tried two different sending units.

Where does yours normally read?

Yes this is normal. At idle your crank is not turning as many RPMs as when you are driving so your oil pump will not be pumping as much pressure. So your reading is supposed to fluctuate. I got rid of the idiot gauge and put in an after-market one to see the numbers.

Start up idle: 40lbs (+/-)
Idle (normal running temp) @ 1000 RPMs: 20lbs
3000 RPMs (NRT): 45-50lbs

Depending on what your idle screw is set at, you can actually watch you oil gauge rise and fall with out driving. 1/4 point at idle sounds about right (if your idle RPM is between 850 - 1000 RPMs)

Those idiot gauges suck. You can get after market one for $25-40 if you just want to check everything to make sure that you have good pressure. Alot of them are electric. It comes with a sensor that you screw in to replace the OEM oil pressure sender which you connect a wire to that leads to the gauge. Install time takes all of 15 minutes.

i put oil pressure gauges on my first two mk1s and they both read the same as above. it seemed a little worrysome to me that oil pressure seemed so low, but neitehr car had issues and teh engione from one is still going strong in anotehr mk1. so i figured it was normal.

glad i found this. I just got my supra yesterday and noticed that the oil pressure gauge was offly low. So i hit the throttle and it went to about the halfway point. I was a little scared so i shut it off and wasnt gonna run it again until i could get a pressure gauge on it.

I looked up the factory oil specs from toyota on alldata and they said at idle it should be more than 4.3 psi and at 3000 rpms it should be 36-71 psi. Which is kind of a broad specification but thats what they say it should be at.
